Soul On Saturday: SPECIAL -Drummer/Producer Paul Hines | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 02:00:00

My guest today is one of the baddest drummers you've heard but you may not immediately recognize. Paul Hines was part of the group Ozone of Motown back in the 80's. Ozone was a funk fusion band that many say was ahead of their time. They were complete, backed up many of the Motown acts and were actually the only band on the Motown label to produce 5 album projects. Charles Glen, founding member of Ozone was a recent guest on the SOS and highly recommended that I bring on Paul Hines. Well for yours truly it was a no brainer as paying tribute to this music is what it's all about on the Soul on Saturday. They actually still perform together today as part of an all star jazz band. As for Paul his drum beats on Teena Marie's Square Biz, a song that helped take her career to the next level back in the day has never been replicated or duplicated and was the funky beat to that song that made it move. Paul is living music history as we will hear. His career took him many places as well as his knowledge of the music is special. Please join me today as I welcome Paul Hines to the Soul'.

Soul On Saturday: SPECIAL -Artist/Producer Wardell Potts Jr | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 02:00:00

Today my special guest is Wardell Potts Jr. Wardell was the drummer in the over talented yet under-rated group Dynasty on the Solar Record Label back in the day. He was and is also a very prolific producer and has been responsible in parts for the funky and soulful sound of many of the old school artists music we play on the SOS. He worked with Janet Jackson, Atlantic Star, The Whispers, Carrie Lucas, The Brothers Johnson, and many others. He is still doing his thing today and is working with a lot of up and coming talent as well. Please join me as we wind up the funky time machine and discuss his body of work as well as find out what he has in store for us up ahead. Let show him the Luv' the way we do it on the Soul'.

 Soul on Saturday - Oldschool Soul and R&B SPECIAL:Jay King | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 02:00:00

This week my guest is songwriter, musician and producer Jay King. There was a time when the soul music had distinct sounds depending on where the musicians were from and or what their influences were such as the Motown sound, the Stax sound, and Philly International. Places like D.C., Minneapolis, Dayton, Chicago, all have a place in the musical legacy of Soul music. My guest this week is responsible for a sound of music that hailed from the bay area of Northern California and seemed at first glance to come from nowhere back in the day. The groups Timex Social Club and later Club Nouveau as well as a style of dance, sound good, feel good music came on the scene in the mid 80's and only added to the often overlooked influence of Northern California on soul music. Club Nouveau's version of Lean on Me is as classic as the original. Jay K' had a unique kind of music and by that I mean it was the universal message in the music as well as the dance tunes that would instantly fill a dance floor. While we all can recall a Marvin Gaye 'What's Going' on or MJ 'Man in The Mirror' for a broad context, It was the look at the everyday things which we all go through individually that Jay King and his groups made popular and became forever part of his musical legacy we recognize here on the Soul'. Hits like Rumors and then later, Jealousy, Situation # 9, Why you Treat Me So Bad, are all from the pen and soul of my guest. Jay King is more than just another talented producer/songwriter from yesterday as you will discover in this weeks conversation. Himself a host on BTR, Jay is candid, honest, raw, perhaps even controversial in some of his perspectives. Jay is also a true humanitarian in that he sees where we could be and should be when it come to love and understanding. We'll get into the mind and soul of Jay, talk about his NEW music, his experiences in the music biz' and some of his thoughts on some current events. Join me this week as we welcome Jay King to the SOS.

Soul on Saturday - Oldschool Soul and R&B SPECIAL: Jimmy Brown of Brick | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 02:00:00

This week my guest is Jimmy Brown of the group Brick. Brick brought us some funky tunes such as Dazz, Dusic, We Don't Wanna Sit Down, Wanna Get Down and Sweat Till You Get Wet. They were and still are a well rounded versatile band that could play anything from dance songs to ballads. They were known among other things for the funky horn and flute solos in many of their tracks. That was Jimmy Brown at work. He stops by to join the Soul On Saturday and talk about his time with Brick and his music career. His New solo project which is soul-funky-baddd, is "They Call Me Dad" and all I can say is if you thought you liked what he was doing in the olden golden days of Brick, you gotta hear this new thing which of course we will be playing. He's still doing his thing as well as Brick and we'll get into it all. Join me as I welcome Jimmy Brown to the Soul' and help me show him the luv the way we do it on the SOS.

Soul on Saturday - Oldschool Soul and R&B SPECIAL: Charles Glenn member of Motown band Ozone | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 02:00:00

This week my guest is Charles Glenn. Charles was one of the founding members of the Motown Funk Fusion band Ozone. Ozone was the funky soul R& B house band for Motown during the 80's, backing up many of the artists on the label. They were Teena Marie's band and would often tour with Teena in concert. Charles Glenn is that "Oldschool New" type of musician you can always find on the SOS. He was doing it back in the day and he has something fresh and new for the 2010 too... He is one of the founding members of Ozone but Charles is a true musician and currently has been working with Little Richard as well as having his own all-star Jazz band. We will chop it up like we do it, talking about his body of work as well as listening to the new music he has out and get his thoughts on the music thing as he sees it. All I can say is one word to describe what you'll hear with Mr Glenn...BAAAAD! So come on in to the Soul and join me as I welcome Charles better known as the "Bass King" and we'll show him the luv on the SOS'.

The Imagination at Work: Framing a New Reality SPECIAL GUEST author Joan Bunney | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 02:00:00

My guest this segment has discovered the fountain of youth…well, maybe... Joan Bunney is a writer, professional speaker, and advocate for social change. She is author of the book, “Sexy in your 60’s”. What is so special about Joan is that while most women have reservations about revealing their age, Joan is proud of the fact that she is in her mid 60’s and has the body of a woman many years younger, perhaps in her 30’s. (Just have a look at her website and photos) She has adopted a light hearted nickname “The Sexy Crone” but her message about reversing the aging process is something she takes very seriously. She is literally walking the talk and while her book obviously shares her testamonial journey she also presents a no nonsense approach to the ability these bodies of ours have to not only last a long time but to rejuvenate themselves with the proper application of nutrition science, spirit and attitude. She’s on a mission and has been invited by PBS and other organizations to speak on emerging and ancient technologies and sciences as well as the lifestyle one may adopt that addresses the anti aging topic. Joan already has follow up books planned for when she is in her sexy 70’s , 80’s and 90’s and says she will have a book about her being a sexy centurian when that times comes which she looks forward to. Has Joan Bunney discovered the proverbial fountain of youth of myth and folklore or is there something serious to the notion that we can reverse the aging process? Joan will certainly give you something to think about as we explore the question and she shares her answers. Join me as I welcome Joan Bunney to the Imagination at Work as we take yet another look at framing the new reality.
