Sermon titled "Daily Mass for the Dead: The Poor Souls are Focused on the Will of God" given on Thursday November 8, 2012. Size: 5.4 MB; duration: 15:46. The main focus of the Poor Souls is the will of God. Saint Catherine of Genoa says that the primary pain of the souls in Purgatory is the resistance in their souls, due to the lingering stain of sin, to the Will of God. If we fail to fully unite with the will of God in this life -- being in the "unitive way" -- then purgatory will burn this lack of conformity out of our souls (assuming, of course, we are not lost). Let us daily ask God to help us to love our crosses.

Sermon titled "Daily Mass for the Dead: Purgatory Removes the Stain of Sin" given on Wednesday November 7, 2012. Size: 5.3 MB; duration: 15:19. Sin has three consequences: Guilt, Debt, and Stain of Sin. Confession can remove the guilt; the sinner or anyone on behalf of the sinner can "pay" the debt, but only the sinner can remove the stain of sin by by amending their life and correcting their spiritual malfunctions. To say of the recently departed that "they dead are no longer suffering" belies a profound lack of charity for those souls. The souls in Purgatory suffer incredibly for even the smallest transgression; we ought to offer indulgences and Masses for the Poor Souls.

Purgatory is generally denied these days; one explanation (by Cardinal Ratzinger before he was elected Pope) is that nearly everyone today believes themselves to be a victim and entitled to benefits, such as heaven after death. Faith and reason tell us that there is a middle ground between heaven and hell where the souls of the saved but not yet purged of the stain of sin must be perfected. Saint Augustine says: "The fires [of Purgatory] are more grievous than anything that man can suffer in this life whatsoever." Always remember to pray for the Poor Souls in Purgatory.
