Episode-2439- Akiva Silver Discusses Trees of Power | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:21:11

Akiva Silver has a background in wilderness survival and nature awareness. He holds a deep appreciation for wildlife and trees. Akiva runs Twisted Tree Farm, 20 acres of diverse orchards and a nursery. The nursery provides Akiva and his family of 5 with their full income. He believes in the trees that he raises so much that he sees them as a path forward for humanity and all of the ecosystems surrounding us.  He is now growing around 20,000 trees a year using practices that go well beyond “organic”.  His background is in foraging, wilderness survival and primitive skills.  He has been observing nature intensively for the last 20 years and cultivating a deep appreciation for life. Akiva says that, “by understanding how we can partner with the plant world, we can stabilize and build soils, increase wildlife populations, feed ourselves, manage the carbon cycle, and provide ourselves with abundant income.” Today we discuss Akiva’s new book called Trees of Power.  A resource that breaks out 10 unique trees and how we can work with them as allies to build a better world.  Episode-2438- Walking to Freedom and or Escaping the Rat Race | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:24:48

Long ago I coined the term, “walking to freedom” to explain the concept of movement within a republic.  Some of the sates that seem the most oppressive such as California, New York and Illinois are east to “escape from”.  This isn’t like the days of the Soviet Block in Europe.  There is no Berlin Wall keeping you inside a shit hole like New Jersey. (and hey I was born there, I get to call it what I want)  All it takes is some planning, a U-Haul Truck and a new destination. Today we are going to discuss the concept of walking to freedom that way and another way as well.  Consider my property, where I live I can pretty much do anything I want.  I have built 3 sheds since coming here and done two major remodels on parts our our house.  Permit?  We don’t need no stinking permits!  Seriously where I live they don’t even exist.  Once or twice a year I have anywhere from 25-75 people camping on my property for 5 days.  Drinking, hanging at campfires, etc.  No one cares, if they did care, it wouldn’t matter they have zero recourse!  It is about as free as you can live with regard to do as you wish with your own property in our country. Thing is I don’t live in the sticks.  On an off traffic time I can be in downtown Fort Worth in 20 minutes, 30 with traffic.  And that is on a road with a lot of stop lights!  Guys I am literally by road only 13 miles from Fort Worth down town and I can do anything I want.  Yet two miles away in a town called “Lakeside” with a population of just about 1300, they don’t have HOAs because the towns cops are like a government HOA.  One guy actually got a ticket for parking his car on his OWN LAWN.  The point is freedom might be a few states away, a single state away, a few counties away or even just across the street. The key is while liberty is universal it means something different to everyone.  To some it is having chickens in your back yard, for others it is not having chickens that make noise next door.  Now I don’t understand the second type of person but they have as much right to find a place to their liking as I do.  That is why we are so blessed that to be blunt this nation is so freaking big and so diverse from a cultural and a climate angle both.  What you want you can find in the US, the key is before you even start looking, you must define exactly what that is. Join Me Today to Discuss… Do you want to move, if so why, make sure you really do What exactly is freedom, more importantly what is it to you Making your liberty checklist Understanding the concept of a tax foot print The basic types of property we can consider Urban/Suburban Neighborhoods Planned communities Truly rural property Full on farm land Very remote land The urban rural fringe What things are important to you beyond the property itself Neighbors Church Community Culture Shopping Medical Facilities Schools Job Options Family Needs and Wants Making the move Use your checklist Visit and really learn the place Shop and shop and shop, on and offline Be prepared to walk away from any deal There is no such thing as an offer that is too low If it sucks yes, you can “go home again” Thinks that expand your options Building on raw land, it ain’t always easy though Own a business or work remote Being patient Looking closer to where you are now Cash buyer or heavy on cash equity Being willing to rough it, at least at first No this isn’t for everyone, some questions to ask How can I have more of what I want, where I am at Might I just need to move a few miles, perhaps 20ish, driving won’t kill you Do you need to get things more in order before doing this It comes back to what you really want, but your dash is shrinking, don’t wait forever Final Thoughts   Resources for today’s show… Follow Life With Jack on Instagram TSP Facebook Group Join the Members Brigade Join Our Forum Walking To F[...]

Episode-2435- The Design Science of Permaculture – Part Five | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:29:54

Six weeks ago I realized that we have not really dived deep into the topic of Permaculture I began this current series on Permaculture. So far we have completed part one, part two, part three and part four of this series. If you have not listened to them you may want to before proceeding in the series. You can find the entire series here. Today we are going deep into how to actually set up and design a small permaculture property, or a zone one for a larger property.  While I am going to come at this process from the stand point of a typical suburban yard, it absolutely will apply directly to zone one on larger properties as well.  This should make it broadly appealing to the majority of the audience. Join Me Today to Discuss… Lets review again the significance of agriculture vs. horticulture Going back to TSPs very early roots, this is really about moving from home to homestead Some advantages to small properties and zone one design You can mulch and irrigate everything You can build the most productive soil in the world It forces you to think about every decision Your system ends up easy to maintain and you don’t get in over your head The truth – You actually already know how to do this – you just need to give yourself permission to act Systems and Techniques for Urban Design Aquaponics Wicking Beds Micro Earth Works Water Catchment Garden Ponds Columnar Apples or Spindle Apples Trellises Succession and layer planting Composting Wildlife habitat creation Animal Systems – quail, chickens, rabbits, pigeons, fish, worms Permaculture Principles for Small Space Design Do the least work for the highest return Everything should serve multiple functions The problem is the solution Diversity is only as powerful as the interconnections it creates Slow, spread and soak water and hence nutrient Humans are native to earths ecological systems Water is life, but so is soil – if soil isn’t lost it is being built Final Thoughts   This continues a multi part series on Permaculture, next time we will discuss, harvesting, using, and storing surplus. Melissa is the first legal female extractor of hemp in NC and founder of Hemp Magik. She created the company while trying to help her dog, Luna heal from very severe Grand Mal seizures. She passionately researched what would make CBDs from hemp the most effective and ended up extracting her own CBD products that met her expectations of what CBDs from Hemp can really do for the health of all beings. She sought out the highest manufacturing and product purification standards, hired biologists and biochemists, and researched effective methods in a never ending passion in helping her redefine the Magik of Hemp Health. With Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP)-compliant facilities, Melissa is setting standards for the industry. She is currently working with state legislators to push high quality standards for CBD products in North Carolina.  She is also the founder and owner of Hemp Magik a Members Support Brigade Supporting Vendor and my personal choice for CBD Oils for Jack’s family.  Episode-2433- Understanding Systemic vs. Natural Capitalism | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:18:32

I had to think a bit about the title of today’s show.  It was spawned by this quite anti capitalist article at The Exiled.  Let me say I feel the author Yasha Levine is coming at things from a leftist anarcho position, however the article is absolutely accurate in its telling of history.  The upshot, capitalism is bad!  And yet I am a self described “anarcho capitalist”.  So is capitalism bad, or is it good?  As always, it depends! This led me to the distinction between a system of capitalism (in general statism in the form of modern fascism) and natural capitalism.  To me natural capitalism is the only truly natural system of economics we have.  Natural capitalism recognizes that people acquire things and if they do so by legitimate means it is their property.  Further that some people are better at or like to do some things more than others.  Hence trade is a way for people to gain that which they do not have and in doing so both parties are better off for it. Further natural capitalism recognizes that most people don’t want to hurt or kill others.  Even more so that most people do not want to be hurt or killed.  So it simply is better for everyone to conduct trade between individuals, tribes and nations rather than to take by force what one wants.  Even when you are the type that will steal, harm and kill, the reality is if you do it long enough, someone is likely to do it back to you. When most people use the term capitalism in a positive way, this is what they mean.  I grow food and sell the surplus to Tom.  Tom’s money is now mine to keep or spend, my food is now for Tom to eat, share, resell, do what ever he wants to with it.  The trade is based on our mutually agreed upon view of value, it is also a voluntary exchange and both of us are free to trade or not to, it is our choice. Well, that is all good and well but what happens when the state gets involved and something natural is made forced, unnatural and coerced?  Well as we shall see today, many times some very bad things.  We can say the same thing about the supposed antonym of capitalism, socialism.  We think of socialism as a form of economics, but it really isn’t, until the state forces it to be such.  Socialism in its natural state is only cooperation by humans because those cooperating view it as beneficial.  If 20 people settle around a lake and see it as vital to their lives and hence set up some agreements, it is socialism, natural socialism that is. These agreements may be on how many fish can be taken, perhaps even a way where fish are shared.  How much water can be used, what can and can’t be dumped in the lake.  If it needs maintenance the people may pool labor or simply pool money to pay for it, etc.  This is pure, honest, socialism.  The choice is up to the individual, if you want to be part of this group, these are the rules.  Systemic socialism is when a person is required to be part of a group they never asked to be part of and their property is taken in the name of collective good. As we will see today, capitalism and socialism are both wonderful things when humans are left to their natural inclinations in using them on a voluntary basis, but once the state gets involved either can be used to enslave a population.  Episode-2430- The Death of Personal Responsibility | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:07:05

Before we get deep into today’s topic I am going to go a bit deeper with some planned changes in the show’s format.  Don’t worry TSP isn’t changing per se just some changes in the schedule, format, etc. to keep stuff fresh. Then I want to discuss the subject of personal responsibility in the world today.  I was recently asked by a guest if I really believed the quote buy Permaculturist Geoff Lawton… “All the worlds problems can be solved in a garden.” My response was, absolutely, but you need personal responsibility as well.  The response came back, “Personal responsibility of the gardener or the world.” Well, both but first, the gardener!  This is the key, the rest of the world is not ever going to be personally responsible for shit until the minority that actually see value in such things, shuts up about it and gets on with doing it.  This is one of many reasons that politics is dead to me.  I see the same bullshit from both sides and I ain’t talking the elected clowns at this point, I am talking about the people watching the circus and choosing a group of clowns to root for. The left attacks the right, the right attacks the left, everyone agrees that government sucks and is corrupt but they want more of their kind.  So here is another quote, this one is my own…. “Here is everything wrong with government, along with my plan to make government bigger and more powerful” ~ Every Politician Ever So it is clear that the solutions exist outside of the State and its’ systems.  It is also clear that the solutions are not really of interest to the average person.  So what is the answer?  You and your own back yard, side yard, friends, porch, life, bank account, children, etc.  As always we are back to the “real circles of life”. What are the real circles of life?  There are three, they are… The circle of concern The circle of influence The circle of control   I call them your real circles of life because you will spend every waking moment of your life with your mind and hence you inside them.  The first circle is the weakest, these are all the things you are concerned about but have no real control or influence over.  Like the SJWs crying on YouTube or the assclown circus going on in congress right now, etc.  This also includes anything anyone is doing or saying that takes up your attention but you can’t really influence or control. The second circle is all of the things you are concerned about and can influence but can’t control.  If you are a parent of adult children, this is a perfect example.  I personally feel I have a lot of influence in the life of my son, daughter-in-law and grand kids.  When they want advice I give it, sometimes I see an issue and I give advice unasked.  My son, however; is a grown ass man. It is his family, he makes the call. Likewise some of my neighbors have started to plant trees due to my example some never will, I have influence but no control.  Via this podcast I influence over 200,000 people and those they influence, but I don’t control a damn thing my listeners do or don’t do.  I can tell you guys, my neighbors or my son that you need a household budget but I can’t make you write it up, nor can I make you follow it. The third circle is the most powerful circle.  It is all the things you both care about and control.  If you want a garden and you have a yard, you can damn well plant a garden.  The most important thing about this circle is not just that you can control your actions in it, but your thoughts as well.  Don’t like gardens, then thoughts of gardens are not something you need to concern yourself with.  Got it?  The key here is you control what you think, how you learn, how you act, etc.  And you don’t get to do this for any other human on the planet.  Just you!  Episode-2429- Dr. Jeff Tomberlin on Black Solider Fly Compost Systems | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:13:13

Dr. Jeffery K. Tomberlin is a Professor & AgriLife Research Fellow in the Department of Entomology at Texas A&M University. He is also the Director of the Forensic & Investigative Sciences Program at Texas A&M University, and the principle investigator of the Forensic Laboratory for Investigative Entomological Sciences (F.L.I.E.S.) Facility at Texas A&M University. Research in the F.L.I.E.S. Facility examines species interactions on ephemeral resources such as vertebrate carrion, decomposing plant material and animal wastes in order to better understand the mechanisms regulating arthropod behavior as related to arrival, colonization and succession patterns. The goals of his program are numerous; however, a major focus of his research is on waste management in confined animal facilities as well as concerns with food waste being placed in landfills. His research efforts for the past 20 years have been developing methods for the production of alternate protein sources for use as livestock, poultry and aquaculture feed from these resources. Predominately, these efforts have been accomplished through his research with the black soldier fly. Since arriving on campus at Texas A&M University in 2007, nine Ph.D. and seventeen M.S. students have completed their degrees under his supervision. Dr. Tomberlin welcomes those that are interested in collaborating or gaining experience in black soldier fly as a sustainable system to produce protein or other areas of his research to visit the F.L.I.E.S. Facility. Dr. Tomberlin has worked with companies throughout the world including, but not limited to Malaysia, China, and Australia. He has also given presentations (e.g., TEDx) on insects as food and feed throughout the world as well (e.g., China, Malaysia, Australia). Because of Dr. Tomberlin’s commitment to protecting the environment while helping others, he, along with a group of close friends, started EVO Conversion Systems, LLC. The mission of EVO is to protect the environment while producing protein with the black soldier fly. Through EVO, individuals are trained to mass produce the black soldier fly as well as partner with other companies that are a part of the EVO Consortium. EVO has partnerships throughout the world and welcomes others interested in learning how to become a collaborator on this exciting path towards sustainable agriculture. Dr. Tomberlin joins us today to discuss The use of black soldier flies to recycle food or animal waste to produce protein as feed for livestock as well as the production of compost: updates on industry and backyard uses.  Episode-102- TSP Rewind – Why Blind Patriotism is a Greater Danger than State Oppression | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:33:28

Today is an episode of TSP Rewind, commercial free versions of past podcast episodes. Today’s episode was originally Episode-1582- Why Blind Patriotism is a Greater Danger than State Oppression and was originally published on May 27, 2015. The following are the original show notes from that episode… I could simply say as to today’s topic that blind patriotism is a greater danger to liberty than state oppression because the former enables the latter but that would be an over simplification. This is actually a highly complex and I believe a very important subject. I have been struggling with how to explain what I have to say today for a long time. Yesterday I made two posts on facebook that stirred up some shit storms, the first was this in response to the outrage at a shirt with an upside down flag on it. The second post was my overall feelings about the flag itself, where I express disgust at those who damage our flag but I also acknowledge their right to do so if said flag is their property. Post about The Upside Down Flag Shirt Post about the Flag and Freedoms for All   The most concerning thing to me that people said in response to these posts was, “if you don’t like America the way it is, leave”. Really? So should all of our forefathers that didn’t like slavery of left? Should all of our great grandparents that found it wrong that women could not vote have left? Should all of the people who found the 18th Amendment to be insane just have left America? Should the people who worked to pass the Civil Rights Act have just instead left America because they didn’t like the way it was? I am sorry folks, America doesn’t work that way. Love it or leave it is not patriotic, it is the opposite of patriotism, it is simply saying accept the will of the State or shut up or leave. It is also extremely dangerous thinking, today we examine why. Join Me Today to Discuss… If you blame the individual solider you are part of the problem too A story of a Nazi solider that saved my father in laws life My post about the flag shirt and my follow up about the flag itself Be angry with the system, not those who have been fooled by it What it means when you place a symbol above the ideals it is to represent Why our nation should not be at war at all right now Why you can yes support our troops and not support their mission How your government actually views the military you revere Why those who served the longest and gave the most get offended by these things Why we should understand their offense and respect them as people Why American ideals in my view are actually anarchist ideals Why the most patriotic thing you can do is speak against your government when it is wrong The real danger of blind patriotism, and the larger danger of anarchist arrogance   Resources for today’s show… Join the Members Brigade Join Our Forum Walking To Freedom TspAz.com – support TSP when you shop on Online Granddaddy’s Gun Club Biltong for Breakfast TSP Android App TSP iPhone App   Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.
