Maserati "I have never been one to steer clear of hyperbole, and so it is with great pride and conviction that I embark on this over- the-top endorsement of what may well be the greatest band to ever call Athens home. From their early days as post-emo-reformed-math experimenters, Maserati showed promise, but with last year's addition of dynamo Jerry Fuchs (who for my money is the greatest living rock drummer), the group embraced the misunderstood and oft-maligned universe of psychedelic rock, introducing a healthy dose of Pink Floyd and Can to their already compelling prog-punk mix. Drunk on the power of this newfound experimental freedom, Maserati continues to evolve in ways their built-in hipster audience might not fully appreciate but lovingly laps up all the same." - Ryan Lewis, Athens Banner-Herald

Betsy Franck & The Bareknuckle Band Betsy Franck and her Bare Knuckle Band debuted on the scene in Athens, Ga. In October 2002, with a five song bluegrass acoustic EP. Slow pedal steel rifts, and sweet vocal harmonies characterize this early effort. Then in January 2003, Betsy and the BKB went into John Keane Studio’s and came out with an electrified, and amplified seven song album. With help from friends like fancy fiddler David Blackmon, there is definitely some bluegrass, mixed with those same soulful vocals, and a little bit of honky tonk. The current configuration boasts a different sound than the latest recording. Dirty blues slide guitar, busy bass lines, gospel/country vocals, and rock n’ roll drummin makes for some soul infused shake your booty blues rock.

 ATHFEST '06: Vicariously Through Cats | File Type: audio/x-m4b | Duration: 24:05

"VTC is a pteradactyl wingspan family affair. We formed to play electric versions of Heather Heyn's acoustic material, and satiate the southeast's appetite for understated sexiness. You can see members of VTC perform together with bands such as Dark Meat Vomit Lasers Family Band and Ginger Envelope, or without each other in many other groups. You may just as easily see us kickin' it anywhere at anytime in the ACC. The band started with Heather, Forrest, Aaron, and Robbie who has moved on to other expressions in baritone. We added Asa to fill out the sound, and Jason was added to do the same when VTC toured North Carolina without Aaron, who was off touring with another band he's in. VTC members are notoriously busy with multiple projects. We've been asked to cover "Manic Monday" and intend to do so someday..." *http://www.myspace.com/vicaiouslythroughcats Photos: Kevin M.  ATHFEST '06: Venice Is Sinking | File Type: audio/x-m4b | Duration: 34:07

"Formed in 1726 in Port Royal, Jamaica, Venice is Sinking was born the poor child of a seafaring sugar merchant. Its father passed away at an early age, but this traumatic event did not deter Venice is Sinking from taking up the sailor's life itself. The call of the sea was just too potent to ignore, so in 1743, after many years working in the sugar cane fields, Venice is Sinking took a position as house musician on the British sloop, the Lonely Wytche. Unfortunately, during a storm near Bermuda in 1745, the ship was lost, never to be heard from again. In 2004, Venice is Sinking mysteriously reappeared in the Caledonia Lounge parking lot in Athens, Georgia, trying to take a three pronged plug off a 1985 Volkswagen Westphalia for purposes unknown. As they have played many shows since then, one can only assume that they succeeded." *http://www.veniceissinking.net Photos: Kevin M.
