 F2FHQ 023 – Forks Over Knives Review | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:11:17

Carol and Jake review the Forks Over Knives documentary.  They also followup on some of the goals and ideas talked about in the last episode.   Welcome to the Fat2FitHQ podcast. I’m your host Jake Challand from GunGuyRadio and here we plan to chronicle our journeys from Fat to Fit.  We’ll talk about pursuing a healthier lifestyle not only in diet, but in all areas of life. Carol Salva from Texas is joining us again from Houston Texas.  Carol is a fitness enthusiast and avid listener to the show. Since last episode: Zack is sick, or so he says. Jake saw Zack on a Vegas Trip.  Fried Twinkies were discussed. Ty Clark: lost 47lbs  Way to go Ty.  We would love to hear more!  Please write again. Angela: Had some great insight for us last time and it had an impact on Carol this month.  She shared Dean Dwyer’s Make Shift Happen book and podcast.  Also some of her personal journey was helpful for Carol to hear.  Thanks Angela! Carol had a few too many treats after Christmas because she got too comfortable.  She shared that a juice fast helped her drop cravings.  Her friend Caroline connected with her on a free fitness app (www.myfitnesspal.com) and that got her back on track. Weigh in: Carol Starting weight 145, 5’1” Currently 120 lbs Jake Starting 228 lbs. 6’1” Currently 213 lbs ? Topic: Forks Over Knives: Free on Amazon Prime and Netflix Jake:   Too much processed food, sugar and artificial oil.  People have to overeat to be satisfied. Dense foods, wheat, corn Cut dairy out? Acidosis didn't wheat belly talk about this too? Carol: Good information about how important it is to try to eliminate or reduce processed food. Don’t really buy that the meat is the problem. On Denise Minger’s site, Raw Food SOS, she debunks many aspects of the movie: http://rawfoodsos.com/2011/09/22/forks-over-knives-is-the-science-legit-a-review-and-critique/ Discussion about eating more organic when possible. Houston has a great organic produce co-op (www.FullyRaw.com)  Maybe there are similar things in other cities. Carol is an official Co-Host now!  But still wants Zach back. Next Documentary: http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Farmageddon/70235704?trkid=496624 Feedback: Caroline:  Hello, to be honest I would never have listened to a Pod cast from "gunguyradio", based solely on my emotional reaction to that name. However, Carol is a big fan and I am glad I listened to her speaking on air. This next year my word will be QUALITY, it will encompass aiming for a higher quality of nutrition, putting more in and getting more from my workouts. Also heading towards a better quality of relationships and the way in which I give of myself. I have become more mindful of doing things with purpose and good intent, claiming ownership and living with those consequences. For many of us these things do not come naturally, due to limiting childhood experiences and some poor choices, but I also believe in moving forward and living an open minded life. For many of us this has to be a daily conscious decision. Happy New Year Itunes: Wrap-up Send feedback to success@fat2fithq.com Please leave a review on iTunes to really help us out.  F2FHQ 022 – Resolve | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:02:49

Fan and fitness enthusiast Carol joins Jake to discuss a new take on New Years resolutions. Welcome to the Fat2FitHQ podcast. I’m your host Jake Challand from GunGuyRadio and here we plan to chronicle our journeys from Fat to Fit.  We’ll talk about pursuing a healthier lifestyle not only in diet, but in all areas of life. Carol's bio/intro: Carol Salva is fitness enthusiast from Houston, Texas.   She is a 44 year old wife and mother of three young children.  After years of struggling with weight gain, Carol was successful at reaching her weightloss and fitness goals in 2010 when she participated in a national fitness competition.  Later that year she was featured as a Success Story in Health & Fitness magazine.  Carol has maintained a healthy weight for over two years and has adopted a healthier lifestyle for herself and her family.  When time allows, she participates mud runs, mountain biking, kayaking, trail running and Adventure Racing. http://www.healthandfitnessmag.com/magazine-sections/fitness-and-exercise/success-story-14 Topic:  Resolve Positive mindset Believing we happen to things and we choose how we react to circumstances and how we feel about those circumstances. Our habits are completely at our command In control of our thoughts inside the circumstances. We may need to break out of our conditioning(upbringing).  Trained or brought up to think negatively. Truth is you can be anyone you want to be. Emotion we feel is usually result of our programming. Feeling is real but source is a lie. Who told you that, why do you believe that, why do you do that? Optimism is a habit Being glass half full is a habit. Focus on what you're doing right!  And expand, move forward. Life will move in the direction you're thinking. So think in a positive direction with positive goals.  Believe in those and they will began to transpire as you move forward. Don't focus on self critique. Review more Documentaries: Next time.... really :) Forks Over Knives: Free on Amazon Prime FEEDBACK: Jenny: "I noticed you exhibited a good sense of self control during Thanksgiving.  No pumpkin pie, even though you love it, no rolls, no seconds.  How did you develop that self control?  I'm pretty sure I know your answer, but I think your listeners would like to hear it.  Especially during this time of the year when the listeners may be struggling themselves. Ty Clark:  That fixed it, thanks! Just listened to the last episode. I emailed you guys back in July, a month into my journey. I'm now down 47 pounds from 240 to 193. All from only a change in diet. Listening to Zach tell stories about how much weight he gained every time he went to Olive Garden definitely helped motivate me to stay away! I wish you guys luck and look forward to the new episodes. Angela:  Hi Guys I just got caught up with all your podcasts today (was missing Zack on that last episode!) And I feel so much more motivated.  I also have fallen off the wagon (though later in the year than you guys since it's already December). So while some of these comments are from months ago I think it's worth knowing! 1 - In keeping with the "lifestyle" theme - a great book & quick read you may want to check out is Dean Dwyer's Make Shift Happen.  He also has a great website, 2 podcasts and is quite entertaining.  He runs in the paleo-sphere, but it's much more than what you eat. 2 - If you have a cast iron pan and wash it with water (which I do) you need to make sure you heat dry it so it's doesn't rust!  You can't just leave it to air dry.  I put mine back on the burner to get the water off.  You can also season it extra yourself (which I do every so often) by placing it in the oven at 300 for 60 mins or so after you've wiped it well with oil 3 - Zack - maybe you need a Julia Roberts experiment with eggs!  I kept hearing you say you don't like eggs, but every time you tried them it seemed you only tried scrambled.

 F2FHQ 021 – Wheat Belly Part 2 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 26:31

Jake fills you in with what he learned in the 2nd half of the book Wheat Belly.  He also outlines the future of Fat 2 Fit HQ. Welcome to the Fat2FitHQ podcast. This Jake from GunGuyRadio and here we plan to chronicle our journeys from fat to fit.  We’ll talk about pursuing a healthier lifestyle not only in diet, but in all areas of life. Wheat Belly Experiment: Jake: Have not gained any weight like I thought I may.  Holding steady at 210 not too bad for 6’ 1”  I don’t look overweight.  Still need to lose 20lbs. Cutting grain out is easier than full blown Paleo. Still like Paleo, need more money to make it work. Topics: Wheat Belly - Part 2 or 2nd half of the book Definitely a must read! Wheat messes with the body's PH level Wheat /grains only plant we eat that produces sulfuric acid. Increased wheat gluten intake cause body to steal calcium from bones at an increased rate. Young heart patient eliminated wheat and shortness of breath and joint pain went away. Seems like if nothing else this books gives a ton of real world examples of sickly people eliminating wheat and having their symptoms go away. Diabetes accelerates aging? Has anyone tried einkorn wheat? Send feedback to - jake@gunguyradio.com Eating ancient Wheat @ Life after Carbs blog Wheat Belly What’s next for Fat 2 Fit HQ? Monthly show New years resolution show Review more Documentaries: Forks Over Knives: Free on Amazon Prime Listener Feedback: Hello Hank, Zack and Jake, Wait, where is Hank. Are either of you keeping a food diary? I am and every time I binge and have to enter it in the diary I am acutely aware of how bad I did. It provides motivation to get back on the wagon. How do you remember everything you eat on a binge; take pictures of what you eat with your smart phone so you can be precise. I am down 72 lbs (start Feb 2012) to 176lbs. Doesn't wheat belly bring you back to paleo; all organic, non-processed, no chemical additives? Romaine lettuce makes a good substitute for bread in many instances; hamburgers, hot dogs, tuna, etc. Wrap the meat in the leaf and add your condiments. I make vegetables palatable by frying them in bacon-fat; even cabbage is great. good luck OC Thought this might be interesting to you considering the latest F2F topic: http://www.naturalnews.com/037170_GM_wheat_liver_failure_GMO.html This is quite the alarmist page pointing out a lot of observations about the human genome, which is fully sequenced and portions of the wheat genome, which is 3 times as complex as the human genome and is not yet mapped or sequenced. The similarities pointed out by the article may or may not exist, but there is certainly no proof that they have any effect, good or bad, on humans. Read down near the bottom the note they had to add after the initial publication: There are currently no commercially produced GMO wheat varieties anywhere in the world. They are being tested and researched by companies, but NONE ARE IN THE CURRENT FOOD SUPPLY….. Interesting. Current wheat varieties are hybrids of the best varieties of wheat. They may be combined in the lab, yes, but the same results could theoretically eventually be reached in the field through selective cross breeding. Making these combinations in the lab ensures the characteristics desired are attained without variability or risk of traditional methods, and brings the hybrids to the market exponentially faster. This results in a cheap, readily available, and RELIABLE food supply. Without selective breeding and GMO technology imagine what the cost of food would be right now, much less the status of the overall supply. This year we had a drought year that was compared to conditions in the 30’s, the dustbowl era, yet crop production was the 8th highest of all years on record. We have been eating GMO soybeans and corn for many years and I still haven’t grown a tail. Roundup Ready soybeans, the first GMO, were introduced in 1996,

This week Jake gives us a rundown on Wheat Belly the book and what to do about Wheat. Welcome to the Fat2FitHQ podcast. This is Zack and Jake from GunGuyRadio and here we plan to chronicle our journeys from fat to fit. Week in Review Weigh In BEGINNING: Zack 278.2, Jake 228 LAST WEEK: Zack 258 Jake 211 This week: Zack - forgot to weigh in Jake - Topics: Wheat Belly initial impressions by Jake. Wheat Belly FEEDBACK: Hey Jake & Zack, Thank you for turning me on to Relentless Roger & the Caveman doctor. Between your podcasts & theirs, I'm about 90% Paleo & loving it. In 2009 I was 40 years old & 145lbs. Im only 5ft 1in and I was NOT carrying it well.  I joined the Y & worked out like a maniac. I went to low fat/low calorie diet & I lost 30 lbs in 6 months. The best thing about that experience was that I learned to eat clean & get active. I was even a success story in a local magazine.  (Link below) That was great but as soon as I stopped doing hours of cardio & keeping my calories super low, I'd gain a few lbs. It started to get miserable. Then I watched Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead. Started doing juice fasts. That worked well but the pounds came back between fasts. Best take away from that:  micro-nutrients are super important. When I found you guys I was still struggling to keep calories & fat low. But I followed along with you & have been experimenting with Paleo all summer. I love it!! I'm like Jake - 90%. But I can eat way more food, workout way less & maintain my weight. I hover around 122 & I'm somewhat satisfied with that. I stopped distance running & doing hours of cardio after listening to Roger's podcast. I do sprints, heavy lifting & occasional boot camp classes.  I've been at it for several months & I'm pretty dang happy. Every once in a while I do too much non-Paleo eating & lbs reappear quickly.  Intermittent fasting has been great to shed a few lbs & get back on track.  Tons of other health benefits with IF.  Look into it. Just wanted to say thanks & keep the podcasts coming. You're both very inspiring & lots of fun.  F2FHQ 019 – On the Road Again and Facing Failures | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 39:31

This week we talk about failures on the road and other musings about changing your life. Welcome to the Fat2FitHQ podcast. This is Zack and Jake from GunGuyRadio and here we plan to chronicle our journeys from fat to fit. Week in Review Weigh In BEGINNING: Zack 278.2, Jake 228 LAST WEEK: Zack 250.2, Jake 210 This week: Zack - 258 boo hoo Jake - 211 up just a tad Topics:  How to deal with failure! Goal setting for the dirty 30 age. Bacon Method FEEDBACK: Nathan writes:  Hi Zack & Jake, First I'll say I am not trying to lose weight, but I still enjoy listening to your podcast because it's full of useful suggestions and ideas for maintaining a healthy weight. I have lived most of my life maintaining (sometimes just trying to maintain) a low sodium diet. I think this has generally served me well mainly because it steered me away from a lot of pre-processed/prepared foods like microwave dinners, canned soup, etc. It's interesting when you look at what a lot of Europeans eat and their "average" physique. I spent a lot of time in France, Ireland, England, and Scotland, a little time in Germany and observed they eat a lot! The main difference I have noticed between their "a lot" and our a lot is the amount of processing in their food, almost none. Anyway, take that for what it's worth. That nicely transitions into my second comment which is about traveling and eating right. It's true, it's very difficult, but you can do it. One thing I have done in the past is go to the grocery store if you are going to be in one place more than a week. That way you can fix what you want for at least lunch and breakfast and it'll be healthier than eating out all the time. A lot of times on the road I end up skipping lunch too, which usually isn't on purpose, but that's the way it goes. If you aren't going to be in one place so you can go to the store, it's about making the right choice when you go out. If you get stuck going somewhere you don't know what they have take extra time to look over the menu and figure something out for whatever diet you happen to be on. It's OK to ask questions (especially if the menu isn't in English). Breakfast is the easiest to control so do good when you can, when it's easy. That's about all I got, it can be done! Oh yea, Zack, in regards to eggs, I found a sweet egg cooker that you CAN just turn on and walk away from to get hard boiled, poached, or scrambled eggs, automatically. Here is a link, we got one for a wedding present and it's awesome! You can put the eggs scrambled up in the little poaching tray and you will have a block of eggs, just cut them up like you like. http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/regProduct.asp?WRN=-347817155&sku=13166064& Egg Cooker in stock on Amazon Itunes: Boost Pal & Tom G222 Wheat Belly Wrap-up Please leave a review on iTunes to really help us out.  F2FHQ 018 – The traveling weight loss seeker | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 34:14

This week we talk about what to do about your diet while you are on the road traveling where you can’t keep your routine. Welcome to the Fat2FitHQ podcast. This is Zack and Jake from GunGuyRadio and here we plan to chronicle our journeys from fat to fit. Week in Review: Weigh In BEGINNING: Zack 278.2, Jake 228 LAST WEEK: Zack 252.2, Jake 210 This week: Zack - 250.2.. only down 2 lbs this week Jake -? Topic:  Traveling while on a diet.. how to tackle (I’m going to be on trips for about a whole week) FEEDBACK: Hi Jake and Zack! Love, love, love the podcast! I would like to make a suggestion on a future show topic. I am currently doing intermittent fasting by way of Brad Pilon of Eat Stop Eat. There is also a recent documentary by BBC Horizon on fasting that can be found on YouTube. Since intermittent fasting is becoming a hot topic amongst the Paleo crow, I thought it would be a perfect future show topic. Thanks to you both for the awesome podcast! Keep up the great work! G. William Hey guys, i saw the show in the feed regarding low carb lifestyle and thought I would submit my tips and tricks from my low carb lifestyle. A little background:  I have always been a big guy , I always played sports throughout high school and college, but never really lost weight. I tried diets here and there but they always left me starving and never showed the greatest results, so I inevitably dropped them. January 1st 2011, I decided enough was enough. I was the heaviest I had ever been 6'4" 328 pounds. I carried the weight well, most people guessed me at 280, but they were way off. I started off exercising and doing the Cleveland clinic 3 day diet. I did lose some weight but I was starving all the time.  Then I heard about a book called "why we get fat" by Gaury Taubes.  I read the back and it all sort of clicked that carbs were the enemy. The books mentions atkins and such but basically just says to keep your carbs low 20 -30 grams per day and make sure you still get greens. Other than that, eat til you are full. I had mapped out my eating style with fat secret's calorie counter on my phone before i had started all this.  A normal day for me was 200 to 300 carbs.  The cleveland clinic diet was about 100 carbs per day, and now dropping down to 20-25 was huge.  But the fact that I could eat til I was full i.e. lots of meat was the best part.  I was a huge pasta, bread, and cereal eater. My favorite thing that I thought was healthy, was a big bowl of rice crispies with bananas in it. Which turns out was almost 100 grams of carbs!!! Finding meals to cook was tough.  I found a site called lindas low carbs, which was a life saver. I would make the enchilada bake, the lasagna, and the broccoli casserole bake all at the same time. This would last me for lunches at work and a couple meals at home for all week. making those 3 dishes required 4 pounds of burger, but venison is cheap if you stock up during deer season. :) Although I use beef for the lasagna, deer for everything else. There is also a book called Dana Carpender's best 1001 low carb recipes. Their are a few sweet tooth curing recipes in here, like the zucchini-carrot bread. I eat lots of pepperoni and cheeses as snacks, Diamond brand almonds in assorted flavors as chip replacements, and low carb pita bread (4 net carbs) from walmart for sandwiches. I went 7 months before I found those and  now I prefer them to bread and your mind thinks you are having a sandwich.  I even cut them up and bake them as tortilla chip replacements.  Zack, try making an omelet for breakfast. Eggs are best in an omelet. eggs, heavy whipping cream, sausage bacon, peppers, mushrooms, cheese and some hot sauce. Delicious, filling and basically no carbs. I came across a recipe which i modified to become my favorite meal, which is a little more expensive to make but is delicious. Chicken Pizzas. Here is a link to the recipe.

 F2FHQ 017 – Chaz the Trucker Chef | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 46:53

This week Chaz the Trucker Chef checks back in with us to school us on some cooking techniques he’s picked up along the way. Welcome to the Fat2FitHQ podcast. Week in Review: Weigh In BEGINNING: Zack 278.2, Jake 228 LAST WEEK: Zack 256, Jake 209.6 This week: Zack - 252.2, down 3.8 this week so far Jake - 210 even... Have I plateaued ? Topic: Chaz the Trucker Chef How do you cook Paleo for: Breakfast: Gruyerer & Comte Cheese Larabar Fruit and Nut Food Bar, 1.7-Ounce Bars (Pack of 16) Lunch: Dinner: Book recommendation : Practical Paleo By Dianne SanFilipo Balanced Bites Podcast Chicken Beef Fish FEEDBACK: Hey Zach: Just heard the latest podcast where you mention the price of rotisserie chickens vs. ribeyes. You are paying WAY too much for ribeyes.    Have you tried "Price Matching" your meat at Walmart?  Walmart will match any competitor's advertised price on meat, produce & other items.  We save a TON of money by taking other grocery store's sales flyers into Walmart and asking for the price match at the register. Most grocers will take a loss on a few items to get you to their store.  Those sale items on the flyers are called "loss-leaders.".   You could spend all day driving around to get these items on the cheap...or just take the best flyers to Walmart & get it all there on a price match. http://corporate.walmart.com/ad-match-guarantee So you do have to get over the fact that other people see you doing this and you might get eye rolling if you are holding up the line.  But it's WALMART!  The lines are a nightmare anyway.  Once that guy behind you sees your bill cut in half, he might ask for your ads.  And they are open 24 hrs.  Go at off times if you care. I hate feeding the big Walmart Machine!  But we are talking huge savings & you would never find a coupon for Paleo stuff. And hey! Congrats on your progress! Keep the podcasts comin'!  F2FHQ 010 – Food Inc, Paleo, and 4HourBody, OH MY! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 42:59

This week we talk Paleo(caveman diet), 4 Hour Body, and review the documentary Food Inc.  Will Zack & Jake commit to a diet plan? Welcome to the Fat2FitHQ podcast. This is Zack and Jake from GunGuyRadio and here we plan to chronicle our journeys from fat to fit. Week in Review Weigh In BEGINNING: Zack 278.2, Jake 228 LAST WEEK: Zack 265.1, Jake 220.6 This week: Zack- 256.7 up .6 .. this weight loss is getting pretty darn frustrating. I think I’m going to have to start a “program” like 4HB or something else. I make big gains, then lose it with one weekend of cheating and it puts me back over a week of progress. Have a doc. appt next friday. Jake- 219.6 Support us by shopping at Amazon MAIN TOPIC - Food Inc.  Amazon Streaming or Netflix Jake’s Notes: Cool early footage of Mcdonalds and the original way they prepared burgers. Chicken plant, baby chicks on caver belts then stamping them with green dye. LOL 1970s top 5 beef packers controlled only about 25% of the market Today top 4 control more than 80% of the market After tobacco industry decline many farmers turned to raising chicken Chicken farmer lady complaining about debt and being a slave to the company. Overstates new corn yield amounts FDA conducts far less food inspections today Footage of a forklift trying to pick up a sick cow Lady who lost her son says “ we put faith in our government to protect us...” Meat packing master control station More of the same big corporations are EVIL blah blah blah... illegal aliens being picked up like they’re criminals DUH!!! grass fed farmer says “his desire is to produce the best food in the world... wants to meet the need without compromising the integrity...” Global warming B**S*** mentioned business is the source of everything evil 90% of soybeans are round-up ready. Farmers can’t save their own seed.  Monsanto seems like a big bully... I worked for Monsanto in seed genetics.. You can vote to change things 3 times a day by what you buy and choose to eat... Plant a garden Make a meal for you family and eat with them. Zack’s Notes This is a magnolia film, you can tell the production value just in the beginning scenes. Chicken farmers borrow 500k for two houses and earn $18k a year? How is that even a business? Someone needs to call Dave Ramsey before becoming a chicken farmer! I do agree that the regulatory people should not have worked or work for the food companies. Only 13 slaughterhouses ? 32,000 hogs per day.. how did that kill floor work? NAFTA cut over a million farmers out of work since they couldn’t compete with our cheap corn FEEDBACK: LeRoy: I've been enjoying your podcasts and commend you for going through your fit 2 fat journey in public.  I have a documentary suggestion for you.  Fat Head is a counter point to Super Size Me.  I think you will enjoy it.  It chould be available on Netflix streaming and maybe Amazon Prime or Hulu.  Give it a look and share your thoughts. As far as diet plans go, I've had the biggest success getting rid of carbohydrates.  All of these are empty calories and do not satisfy your hunger for very long.  Check out Atkins, Weston A Price, Jimmy Moore's podcasts etc.  I'll send more links as I think of them.  The information available is almost overwhelming. upant:  Just listened to F2F#9   cooking in a truck does not sound like fun or something easy to keep doing these guys do a paleo podcast but not as good as yours. this page is their caveman diet. podcast 8 is a 9 week success story yours  http://www.cavemandoctor.com/about/diet/ (where is my F@F t-shirt for that kiss-up??? LOL) i dropped to 198lbs last week and celebrated with a pound of cake ....oh well can't be perfect all of the time. dang kids and their birthdays Keep up the good work and don't give up.
