According to the newly released Center for a New American Security (CNAS) report, Blinded: The Decline of U.S. Earth Monitoring Capabilities and Its Consequences for National Security, "By 2016, only seven of NASA’s current 13 earth monitoring satellites are expected to be operational, leaving a crucial information gap that will hinder national security planning." Today, we are speaking with Will Rogers one of the authors of the report.

As we have been highlighting in our recent podcasts, each year, USGIF recognizes the accomplishments of industry, academia, government and military with its USGIF Awards Program.  Today we are speaking with Mr. Ray Caputo, who is a Geographer at US Army Corps of Engineers Army Geospatial Center.  Ray actually received the 2008 Military Achievement Award from USGIF.

Last month at the USGIF Technology Day, USGIF hosted a  Student Science & Technology Showcase that featured award-winning projects from high school participants in regional Science Fair and Technology Student Association competitions are on display. For the past 16 years, the US. Air Force Eagle Vision program has tirelessly supported the advancement of Earth observations -- providing invaluable support to homeland security, humanitarian aid, and natural disaster recovery efforts. In February, the U.S. Air Force Eagle Vision Team was awarded the prestigious 2010 William T. Pecora Award by the U.S. Geological Survey and NASA, which honored their outstanding contributions in the field of remote sensing and its application to understanding Earth. Last month, USGIF member company TerraGo Technologies announced that Bob Burkhardt, former U.S. Army Geospatial Center (AGC) Director and the Army’s first Geospatial Information Officer (GIO) had been named to its board of advisors. Since 2004, USGIF has donated $386,000 to promising students in the geospatial intelligence field in the form of academic scholarships. Last year the Foundation awarded $86,000 to 19 recipients and plans to award equal or greater amounts for the 2011 program. Today, we are speaking with one of the 2010 scholarship recipient Shadrock Roberts from the University of Georgia.   On May 2, 2011, USGIF will be closing the application process for its 2011 scholarship program.

In February, the Coalition of Geospatial Organizations issued a letter to the Director, Office of Science and Technology Policy of the Obama Administration voicing concerns about the recent report called “Prepare and Inspire: K-12 Education in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) for America’s Future.” The Coalition of Geospatial Organizations is urging the administration to include the geospatial and the social sciences among those identified as critical Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines.
