Each year, USGIF brings on a new board member who represents the foundation’s Young Professionals Group (YPG) and serves as the YPG working group’s chair during his or her one-year term.  This Young Professionals board member has full voting power within the board and exemplifies all the qualities of a future leader and represents GEOINT Young Professionals as a whole.   Last year, Mr. Alex Martinez, Staff Engineer at Lockheed Martin, served in this role.  And, now he is passing the baton the newest YPG board member Eric Zitz, who is an Associate at Booz Allen Hamilton. Today, we are fortunate enough to be spending time with both Alex and Eric.

Penn State University recognizes achievement by a graduate student who is serving or has served in the U.S. Armed Forces or with the U.S. Intelligence community with its Lt. Michael P. Murphy Award in Geospatial Intelligence – named after Lt. Michael P. Murphy, a United States Navy SEAL who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, for his actions in 2005 during the War in Afghanistan. There are actually two winners this year, and today we are fortunate enough to be speaking with both of them.  We have Bill McDevitt, Senior Mission Planner for SAIC and Vanessa Damato, who is the lead Geospatial Scientist at Special Operations Center – Pacific Command (SOCPAC) Pattern Analysis Section, on the line.  Both just received this recognition at the GEOINT 2011 Symposium.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Civil Applications Committee facilitates Federal civil agency access to U.S. National Systems space-based electro-optical (EO) imagery for natural disaster response; global change investigations; ecosystem monitoring; mapping, charting, and geodesy; and related topics.  The committee’s Global Fiducials Program (GFP) has overseen the systematic collection of this high-resolution imagery to provide controlled geospatial data time series spanning a decade or more at carefully selected sites to study and monitor changes.
