 Advanced Audio Blog #22 - Bayern - Nürnberg | File Type: application/unknown | Duration: 5:06

Learn German with GermanPod101! Don't forget to stop by GermanPod101.com for more great German Language Learning Resources! ----Formal English---- Nürnberg is located in a region called Franconia, in the northern part of Bavaria. It is the second biggest city in this federal state after Munich. Together with other towns in the directly surrounding area it forms an extensive urban area. Three rivers are meeting up there. Besides that several highways cross each other, which link Bavaria with the big cities in the north and the west of Germany. As it is a traffic intersection Nürnberg is an attractive location for industries as well. More for that later. Let’s take a look at the history of the city first. In the Middle Ages Nürnberg experienced an enormous prosperity increase. First, the town got political relevance, when the castle of Nürnberg served as an accommodation for the emperor. Upon a while Nürnberg became an independent free town which involved great advantages for the merchants. Moreover, Nürnberg was famous for first-class handcrafts. The town kept on being very wealthy until the Thirty Years’ War, which led the whole country into poverty. Another boom was caused by the industrialization in the 19th century. In 1835 the first train of Germany run through Nürnberg. There settled companies which provided many jobs. Unfortunately Nürnberg also played a big role for the Hitler-regime. For the Nazis it was a t [...]
