Sie ist bereits zur Zeit der Kelten und Römer gegründet worden und kann somit auf eine fast 2000-jährige Geschichte zurückblicken. Mit weit über 100 000 Einwohnern ist sie nach München, Nürnberg, Würzburg und Augsburg die fünftgrößte Stadt in Bayern. Als Universitätsstadt und wichtiger Industriestandort ist sie auch das wirtschaftliche Zentrum Ostbayerns. Die Altstadt mit dem Dom und vielen weiteren historischen Gebäuden gehört zum UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe. Einst war die Donau ein Teil der Grenze des Römischen Reiches, an der zur Abwehr der Barbaren aus dem Norden mehrere Wachposten errichtet wurden. Spätestens seit dieser Zeit gab es dort, wo heute Regensburg liegt, römische Siedlungen. Regensburg entwickelte sich bereits in der Antike zu einem wichtigen militärischen Stützpunkt. Seit dem 8. Jahrhundert gibt es einen Bischof in der Stadt, und im Mittelalter wurde Regensburg endgültig zu einem bedeutenden gesellschaftlichen Zentrum. Die berühmte Steinerne Brücke, die bis heute erhalten ist, wurde im 12. Jahrhundert errichtet. Sie war damals einer der wenigen Wege über die Donau. Die Zölle, die an der Brücke erhoben wurden, und das Recht auf freien Handel bildeten die Basis für den wirtschaftlichen Aufschwung. In dieser Blütezeit der Stadt wurde auch der Dom erbaut, der über 100 Meter hoch in den Himmel ragt. Er ist das Wahrzeichen der Stadt und lockt viele Touristen an. Fachleute betrachten den Bau als das Hauptwerk der Bayerischen Gotik. Damit der Dom seine Schönheit nicht verliert, sind stets mehrere Handwerker mit Renovierungsarbeiten be-schäftigt. Hierfür werden nach wie vor mittelalterliche Werkzeuge und Techniken benutzt, weil das kulturelle Denkmal möglichst original erhalten bleiben soll. Trotz der langen Tradition ist Regensburg immer jung geblieben. Die Universität lockt viele junge Leute in die Stadt, die ihr neues Leben einhauchen. Die Musikszene hat sich mittlerweile nicht nur in der Umgebung einen Namen gemacht. Ein Höhepunkt ist das Jazz-Festival im Sommer, das mitten in der Altstadt in angenehmer Atmosphäre abgehalten wird. Die internationalen Künstler, die in den Gassen und Kneipen Konzerte spielen, ziehen jährlich an die 50 000 Besucher an. Außerdem gibt es für die Fans klassischer Musik die Regensburger Schlossfestspiele, und auch das ist eine Open-Air-Veranstaltung. So haben auch viele Menschen aus der Umgebung die Möglichkeit, erstklassige Live-Musik zu genießen, ohne jedesmal nach München oder in eine noch weiter entfernte große Stadt fahren zu müssen. ----Formal English---- The city of Regensburg which is located at the Danube is one of the oldest cities in Germany.
