The SubGenius Hour of Slack Podcast

From Rev. Stang's "intro" script: "Ah yes dear friends, it's rerun time and tonight's is Hour of Slack #786 from March 2001. It's never been rerun since then, and it's a really classic one from the period in the late 90s and early 2001s when Wei and I were working every week with the late great Prof. Chas Smith and Lonesome Cowboy Dave on Chas's ESO Swamp Radio show on WCSB in Cleveland, and we were doing a lot of live shows at the Euclid Tavern with their band Einstein's Secret Orchestra."

A rerun of #776 from 2001. With a general running theme of, Sex SubGenius Style, it's a mash-up of the old ESO Swamp Radio, Puzzling Evidence, and rants and music from the Winterstar devival, plus an amazing live recording from an Austin devival of the SubGenius supergroup Booger 9000. Also featured are some keen media-barrage mixes by various lords of alt.binaries.slack, such as Lemur and nu-monet. J. R. "Bob" Dobbs himself is heard briefly, albeit not in human form. The first and last parts of this fifth salute to the SubGenius hero Dr. K'taden Legume are from Hour of Slack #467 ( 1993), with the story of Legume's personal confrontations with televangelists. Then it's 20 X-Day in 2017. Legume discusses chaos on a panel with Onan Canobite, Dr. Hal and Stang. Finally, just because it was part of that old Hour of Slack #467, we take a break from Tales of Legume to hear the very strange but polished APOCALYPSE NOW - THE OPERA from Radio Shorts.

Starts with the last Dr. Legume recording that we made, him on a panel with Dr. Hal, Onan Canobite and Stang, at 20 X-Day in 2017, then cuts to one of our OLDEST recordings of him. He describes a blood-curdling event that he induced at Starwood Festival in 1993, then we hear Stang's actual tape of the dreadful event plus a rant by Dr. Legume. Legume also vividly tells the story of a dire and surreal road trip from when he was first discovering "Bob" in his heart, and in even worse places.

What are the holidays without Slack and reruns? Sappy, nostalgia-provoking reruns on TV are what Christmas is all about, right? Plus, it gives us a break. This is the hoary old annual traditional Xmas Re-Rerun of #867 , which was itself a condensation of some ancient year's 3-show "Best of Xmas Sickness" compilation, which were themselves the concentrated best-of from 15 years' worth of previous Xmas SubGenius and other Xmas weirdo collections.

This third tribute show to Dr. K'taden Legume is an Internet-only "X-rated" show, featuring rants that are so unsafe for work that were we to edit out the cussing and triggers, there'd be almost nothing left. Begins with the original super-infamous "Rape Bear" allegory, followed by even more brutal (and hilarious) fables and children's stories. The true stoy of Beer God Hunger Fucker is revealed. There's much more recent ranting from the 2017 X-Day live radio shows.

We continue the homage to the late Dr. Legume with some of his classic rants from radio shows, devivals and X-Day Drills, from 1996 to 2017. Legume often guested on both Prozak Free Radio with Ed Strange and on Chas Smith's ESO Swamp Radio. Rant subjects include Butthurt Bobbies, The Planet of Broken Glass, and False Christians; at the end, he turns into a whale. In between the recordings, Stang expounds on the good Doktor and the Old Days.

It's true. Dr. K'taden Legume has Boarded the Saucers. This time it's for real. His passing has left a Dr. Legume-sized hole in the fabric of the SubGenius Universe, and we're vainly trying to fill it with this tribute, replaying some of his classic sermons and radio call-ins from over the last 26 years. Includes his 1996 World Tour devival rant in Madison, his 2002 Akron sermon, the 2007 Baltimore show, X-Day preaching on Butthurt, and very weird call-in moments from Chas Smith's ESO Swamp Radio show.

Classic olden-times punk SubGenius hymns and rants from the 1980s by G. Gordon Gordon, Philo Drummond, The Four-Letter Words and Rev. Ivan Stang alternate with new rambling team-ups by Lonesome Cowboy Dave & Stang, Rev. Bleepo Abernathy and Jerry, and Rev. Anna Maul and Dr. Brujaja. And Stang and Onan Canobite. After the first song, this show is mostly words. Ah, but what words!

Herein are two great Onan rants on basic (and yet yet all-new!) SubGenius dogma, one delivered by Onan and one read by Stang. We have songs old and new by Rev. Bleepo Abernathy and Morgan Gutentag, plenty of old-school Media Barrage, the spirited Burning of "Bob" at 21X-Day, a review of the Netflix show Peaky Blinders by Stang, a very weird Eddie Romanov rant read by Stang, and a tribute to the late Rev. Heathen, from Rev. Anna Maul and Dr. Brujaja.

This episode is heavy on the spoken word, and beautifully written! It's written largely by Rev. Dr. Uncle Onan Canobite, Rev. Eddie Romanov, Lonesome Cowboy Dave, Pappy Stang, and THE WEEK magazine's science sections. Some of this excellent writing is, however, read aloud by Rev. Stang, but luckily with lovely background music. Also included are a new Rudy Schwartz Project instrumental from Hell, and ancient, seminal SubGenius classics. Sorry... this is one of those episodes where we get much more REAL than usual. In what they call "real life," over the last few weeks, we SubGeniuses got some fairly good news and some horribly bad news about our brothers and sisters, and ourselves, and this episode is partly about that. Extracting any Slack at all from what came with the bad news has been quite a challenge, but, THERE IS STILL SLACK!

A rerun from 1993 of #414, when Stang got caught with his pants down without special prepared radio-ready edits, at the station in Dallas... so, between music cuts, he read long stretches of the uncut, first draft version of the Hell chapter from the second SubGenius bible, Revelation X. Much revelatory material about the Afterlives and Beforelives was cut from the chapter for security reasons; this is the first time that those early basic censored holy SubGenius tenets have been re-revealed in 25 years.

This is ANOTHER least typical Hour of Slack ever. It was with some trepidation that we let last week's show be an hour of just one old man, Pappy Stang, talking, but it was our most popular show ever! So this week, it's an hour solid of TWO old men talking: Rev. Ivan Stang and Lonesome Cowboy Dave! We figure it'll be TWICE as popular! Topics include #MeThree, Slack, the hellish modern world, aging, Fate, "Bob," Slack, and how They're taking away our freedoms in the name of freedom.

This whole episode is one SubGenius talking: Stang's father, "Pappy." He was a colorful character, a raconteur. His job, and the Navy as well, took him all over, and in his spare time he had some adventures. He was probably around 83 years old when we recorded his true story of going out on the ice for five days with a family of Eskimos - not city Eskimos, but the kind that drive dogsleds, holler "Mush!" and slay seals and polar bears. It's a sometimes funny, sometimes blood-curdling account.
