 Advanced Audio Blog #43 - Roma #7 - The Happy Hour Culture | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 4:47

Learn Italian with ItalianPod101! Don't forget to stop by ItalianPod101.com for more great Italian Language Learning Resources! ----Informal English---- The Happy Hour Culture Campo de’ Fiori is a square right in the middle of Trastevere, between piazza Navona and the Pantheon, and it is also a very good example of the social transformations undergone by the city in the past decades. Trastevere is, together with Monti, the oldest district of Rome. It’s name means beyond the Tevere and the simple fact that it preserved its roman name will give you a clue about how old it is. It has always been a very popular area, so much so that even a ghetto, which in Europe because of the ferocious anti-Semitism of the past, rarely appeared in the cities’ richest areas, was placed there in Trastevere. Buildings have been more or less the same for the last three or four hundred years, and up to the ‘60s it used to be a humble and poor area, where living was cheaper and from where the rich used to quickly flee, moving to the new technologic houses of the suburbs. Then something peculiar happened: slowly, year after year, Trastevere has become a sort of British and US colony, students started to arrive here and slowly, year after year, more and more clubs and fashionable restaurants were opened,. So all those who still had a house here, kicked out their lodgers in order to rent it to the newly arrived wealthy and Italy-hungry foreigners, for thrice the price they used to. A result of this policy has been that today the price for a real estate is higher here than in any other place of the city and that the area is almost completely Anglophone. [...]

Learn Italian with ItalianPod101! Don't forget to stop by ItalianPod101.com for more great Italian Language Learning Resources! -------Lesson Dialog------- ----Formal ---- Commesso: Buongiorno. In cosa posso aiutarla? Peter: Sto cercando un dizionario elettronico italiano-inglese. Ne cerco uno facilmente utilizzabile e a buon prezzo. Peter: Capisco. Ora ci do un'occhiata. Maria: No, Peter, sei migliorato molto. Parli bene. Dopo soli 5 mesi in Italia riesci a esprimenti molto bene. Peter: Beh! Maria: Non preoccuparti! ----Formal English---- Clerk: Good morning. How can I help you? Peter: I'm looking for an electronic dictionary for Italian-English. I'm looking for one that's easy to use and cheap. Clerk: Unfortunately, at the moment, we only keep these three models—this one is surely the most popular. The price is affordable, and it has a large vocabulary. Peter: I understand. Now I'll take a look at it. Clerk: If you have other questions, please call me. Peter: Mm...what do you think, Maria? Maria: For sure, it's handier than the paper dictionary that you always carry around. Peter: No doubt! In confidence, Maria, tell me, am I good at speaking Italian, or am I still hopeless? Maria: No, Peter, you've improved a lot! You speak quite well now. After only five months in Italy, you can express yourself very well. Peter: Well, I still have my thick American accent, don't you think? It can't be washed away! Maria: Don't worry! Italians also have many different accents. And some are so thick that even I cannot understand a word. Yours is easy to understand. Peter: Look, this dictionary has also the "text to voice" function so I can practice my pronunciation. Maria: Sounds like a great idea! --------------------------- Learn Italian with ItalianPod101! Don't forget to stop by ItalianPod101.com for more great Italian Language Learning Resources!
