Patrick: This podcast is sponsored by Lendio.com, the online source you need to find the right business financing to grow your company. So, check them out: Lendio.com, to get your business growing right now. It’s the entrepreneur addiction podcast episode number ten. My name is Patrick Wiscombe. Thank you as always for tuning us in and taking us along wherever and however you’re accessing the podcast today. Coming up on today’s addition on the Entrepreneur Addiction Podcast, today we’re going to be talking about a ‘create jobs for USA’. This was an initiative by Starbucks to start small business lending, and joining me for the podcast is Brock Blake the Ceo of Lendio. How are you? Brock: Doing great. How’s everyone doing today? Patrick: Great. It’s been a couple week since you’ve been on, so it’s good to hear your voice again. Brock: Yeah, it’s great to be back. We’ve had some great podcasts in-between with some interesting authors and experts, which I’m sure everyone’s been enjoying instead of hearing my voice over and over again. (laughter) Patrick: Have you heard those podcasts? Those authors were terrific. Brock: You know, I haven’t. I just downloaded all of them on my iPhone, and I’ll start listening to them on my way in and out on the drive. I just got them off iTunes. Patrick: Now, I know that you’re an iPhone 4 guy. The most pressing question on everyone’s mind is, are you going to get an iPohne 4s? Brock: I am getting the iPhone 4s. Patrick: Alright. Who are you with? Are you with Verizon or AT&T right now? Brock: Well, right now I’m with Tmobile. I’m locked with my phone, but I’m going to make the plunge and go with one of the three: Spring, Verizon, or AT&T. Patrick: Well, I’ll put a plug in for Sprint. I’ve been a customer of there’s for over thirteen years. Brock: Really? I’ve heard good things as of late, and I am actually, really considering Sprint. Patrick: They are not a sponsor of the podcast, by the way. Brock: No? Not at all? Patrick: (laughter) It’s just an unsolicited endorsement. Brock: Well, I heard the cool thing about Sprint was that they completely integrate with GoogleVoice. And so, if your iPhone is connected to WiFi and you’re integrated with GoogleVoice, then essentially you’re not using any of your minutes or any of your data. You’re basically using GoogleVoice, which allows you to probably get one of the smaller packages because, instead of being on their network the whole time, you’re on GoogleVoice’s part of the time. That’s what I’ve heard. Patrick: Not to mention that it is the least expensive. I mean, in terms of just pure dollars, Sprint is the least expensive. You get unlimited data, text, and talk for, I think it’s 69.99 a month. Brock: Good reception, huh? That’s my one big area.

Thank you as always for tuning us in and taking us a long wherever and however you’re accessing the podcast. Dan Bischoff joins me for the podcast. Good morning! Dan: Good morning, Patrick. Patrick: We had to switch studies because we were having technical issues. And we also have Chris Knusden from SocialPlayz.com. It’s good to have you here. Chris: Hey, good to be here with you Patrick. Patrick: We’ve got a very special guest in, well, I was going to say in studio. Where are you Jim? Jim: I’m in Atlanta Georgia. Patrick: We’ve got Jim Beach, who is the author of ‘School for Startups’, and this is very, very cool talking to you because, number one, I always like talking to authors, and number two, I really enjoy talking to entrepreneur authors. So, I’ve got your book here in front of me: School for Startups. Give us a little bit of background and you and your business experience. Jim: I thought I was going to be a corporate guy, and a company told me that I would be better off working for myself. They said that I did not play well with others, and so at twenty-four, twenty-five, I started my first business. It was a children’s technology education company. It started off as a summer camp company, but it grew into a children’s technology education company. And I sold that in 2001, when it had 700 employees and was doing about 15 million dollars a year in revenue, and started teaching at Georgia State University, and taught there for nine years teaching international entrepreneurship. And that’s where the book started to take form, where some of the philosophies that I’d love to tell you about really started to develop. And where we developed, more or less, a method, where we think you can start a business very easily, very quickly with little risk. We used that in our classes and taught that to the students, and the students really responded. Instead of having a text book, we just started a business every semester. So, it became very fun, yet educational for them. Patrick: That’s very cool. Now right on the cover of the book it talks about the breakthrough course for guaranteeing small business success in ninety days or less. Take us through some of those steps if you would. Jim: Well, the first thing we want to do is realize that creativity is not part of the process. You know, it can be and, you know, Steve Jobs of course epitomizes that. But in a lot of ways Steve Jobs broke entrepreneurship for the rest of us. You know, so many people are sitting at home going, “Oh,

Patrick: This podcast is sponsored by Lendio.com, the online source you need to find the right business financing to grow your company. Joining us in studio, in the palatial studios that is PatrickWiscombe.com and Lendio.com. We got Dan Bischoff, director of communications here at Lendio.com. It’s always good to see you. Dan: You too. Patrick: And coming to us via Skype, it sounds like she’s right in studio with us, Cydni Tetro with SocialPlayz.com and her business partner Chris Knusden, who is also at socialplayz. Guys, it’s nice to meet you. Chris: Nice to meet you. How are you doing? Cydni: Yeah, it’s great to be here. Patrick: Alright, let’s get right to it. I’m going to assume that there are people in our audience… by the way, we crossed thirty six thousand listeners. Dan: That’s pretty good. Cydni: That’s awesome. Chris: Congratulations. Patrick: Yeah, just this past week I started adding up everything, and I was like, “Woa! Man! 36 thousand! That alright.” Dan: That’s awesome. Patrick: Anyway, let’s talk about SocialPlayz. Chris, let’s go to you first. What is SocialPlayz? Chris: Yeah, sure. SocialPlayz is a consultancy that’s based right here in Salt Lake City and focuses mainly on helping companies, specifically we mainly really focus on technology companies, on issue related to user acquisitions. So, we have a lot of companies that are coming to us and saying, “Hey, we have a product. We need to develop it. Or, we need to validate it. Or we’re just taking it out to market right now. And we really don’t have a ‘go to market’ strategy. So, we need you to help us put together a go to market strategy and how we’re going to go out and reach our market. And then we need you to help us execute on those strategies.” So, that’s really what we’re about. It’s that simple. It’s mainly user acquisition. So, on the acquisition side, a lot of the different strategies we’re employing are mainly related to social, but also incorporate a lot of search, and then some traditional aspects as well. Patrick: So, in translation: you guys are marketing geniuses? Chris: Well, Cydni is. I don’t know about me. Patrick: (laughter) Cydni: Whatever. Patrick: Hey, Cydni, where are you this morning? Cydni joining us from Skype and also from SocialPlayz, where are you this morning? Cydni: That’s right. I’m actually back in Utah. I just flew in last night. Patrick: Okay, so you’ve got a little, I won’t say jet lag, but you’re feeling… it’s probably nice to be back on the ground? Cydni: It is nice. My travel has been a little crazy lately. Dan: Were you at Disney? Cydni: Yep. I was at Disney in Orlando. We had a big test that we’re running down in downtown Disney,

And we have a terrific show planned for you today. Joining me for the podcast, Dan Bischoff, director of communications at Lendio.com. It’s always good to see you. Dan: Great to see you again. Patrick: On a very, rainy morning. Dan: Where we are, maybe not where our guest is. Patrick: Yeah, that true. In fact, let’s bring her in right now: Suzanne Bates. She is the author of a brand new book. It’s only been out for, what did you say, two to three weeks, Suzanne? Suzanne: Yes, it just came out: “Discover Your CEO Brand.” Patrick: How timely is this in light of what happened with Steve Jobs? Let’s just launch right into this. Let’s first talk about Steve Jobs, and then let’s talk about your book Discover Your CEO Brand. By the way, where can people buy it? Suzanne: You can get it on Amazon.com or any online bookstore, and you can find it in bookstores, too. Patrick: Okay, so, pick it up. Amazon.com. Pick it up at bookstores. And once we get done with this interview you’re going to understand why Suzanne is an author and has decided to right this book. Let’s talk about Steve Jobs. We’ve just received word. Oh, well, I shouldn’t say we just received word. Dan: To people who are listening to this, it’s probably old news by now. A few days. A couple days. Patrick: Yeah. Dan: But they’ll probably be still talking about it because Steve Jobs is such a, like earlier before the podcast Suzanne said, such an iconic figure. Patrick: Let’s talk about Steve Jobs for a minute. You mentioned, and in fact, I think the opening on the sleeve of your, on the dust jacket: Steve Jobs did it at Apple. Let’s talk about Steve Jobs for a minute. Suzanne: Well, he is, without a doubt, the most iconic CEO of our time. He’s made a profound impact on communications, of course, changing the way we communicate, not just, you know, in the first version of Apple with the Mac. But then with the iPhone and the iPod and the iPad. He was, without a doubt, an innovative genius. But he was much more than that. He really really embodied that innovative spirit, and what is so, I guess, astounding is that, I can’t think of another CEO, and there are many great ones out there, I can’t think of another CEO for whom the media would stop and run at a crawl when he passed away. So, his impact has been far beyond the business world. Everybody knows Steve Jobs’ name, and you know, I think, they’re are so many aspects of Steve Jobs that people admire. I first started working with executives myself ten years ago,

I must’ve been just ahead of you because I got stopped at 106 South. Brock: I must’ve been just behind you because I got stopped as well. Dan: Traffic makes for a good podcast by the way. Patrick: It does. Nothing more riviting than talking about things that people can’t relate to. (laughter) Dan: Before Lendio, Brock started funding universe, which helped business owner find VC money or angels investors. So, Brock, of all the angel investors you know… Brock: Uh, oh, here it comes. Dan: What would be the reaction if I came to them and said, “Hey, I have a great idea. I’m going to put a rock in a box and sell it as a pet rock for four bucks?” (laughter) What would the reaction be? Brock: I don’t think you’d get too many takers. That’s for sure. Dan: No? (Laughter) You know, everybody know about the Pet Rock probably, right? From the 1970′s, 1975′s. Patrick: Yeah, my sister, Marielle, had one. Dan: Oh, yeah. My siblings had some, too. They sold them for four dollars, right? Four bucks for a rock in a box. And the original one wasn’t even painted or anything. It was just in a box with some straw or some hay or something. The box had some holes in it, like it could breathe, you know. But for the first six months, the guy sold more than a million of these rocks. Patrick: At for bucks a piece! (laughter) Brock: So, this is from that article: The Dumbest Business Ideas of All Time that Made Millions. And number one was the Pet Rock. Number two is the Flowbee. Although, I don’t know. Patrick: I’ve always wanted to test the Flowbee. Brock: The Flowbee is a pretty impressive innovation. Dan: Have you ever done the Flowbee? Brock: I actually haven’t done it, but I’ve seen it done. Dan: I’ve done it. It kind of makes the head look like a tennis ball. All even, and round, and fuzzy. Patrick: The closest thing I had was a comb with razors in it. (Laughter) Brock: I think the most impressive thing about the Flowbee is that you don’t have to clean it up. Dan: Yeah,
