Natalie Goldberg is a poet, teacher, and the author of eleven books, including her classic Writing Down the Bones: Freeing the Writer Within -- which has sold more than a million and a half copies and has been translated into 14 languages. She has taught seminars for over 35 years to people from around the world, and lives in Northern Mexico. Susan Piver has been a meditation practitioner since 1995 study with Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche in the Shambhala Buddhist Lineage. This week on the ID Project Podcast, IDP Prison Project Coordinator Michael Carey Interviews Acharya Fleet Maull. They discuss the current state of the prison system in the United States, Fleet's experience as a dharma practitioner while inside prison, and the challenges of re-entering society after prison. This is the second of a two part interview. Fleet is a longtime student of Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, and founded Prison Dharma Network in 1989 while serving a 14.5 year sentence for drug smuggling. He led a twice weekly meditation group in the prison chapel for 14 years and wrote "Dharma in Hell," a book that chronicles his experiences in prison. He is an Acharya in the Shambhala Buddhist Community and is a Sensei and dharma successor of Roshi Bernie Glassman in the Zen Peacemaker Order and a senior priest in the Soto Zen tradition. Michael Carey is the coordinator for the IDP's Prison Project. He is the director of the College Initiative, a non-profit reentry education organization that supports formerly incarcerated peopl in their pursuit of higher education.
