This weeks podcast features a lecture by Ethan Nichtern on the practice of Tonglen. The lecture was given on October 24th 2011 in New York City. This is the first of a two part podcast. Translated as "giving and taking" Tonglen is practice where one visualizes taking on the suffering of others and offering happiness in return. A training in dissolving the boundaries we normally place between the "self" and "other," this powerful practice focuses on opening the heart to new possibilities of relating with the world. Shastri Ethan Nichtern is the founding director and Senior Teacher in Residence of the Interdependence Project. For the past eight years, Ethan has taught ongoing meditation and Buddhist psychology classes and retreats in New York City and around North America. He is on the part-time faculty at Eugene Lang College at New School University and lectures regularly at Brown, Wesleyan, and New York Universities. His new book "Your Emoticons Won't Save You" will be released in January 2012.

His forthcoming book Your Emoticons Won't Save You will be released in January 2012. David Loy, PhD is a professor, writer, and Zen teacher. His articles appear regularly in the Tricycle, Turning Wheel, Shambhala Sun and Buddhadharma, as well as in a variety of scholarly journals. David lectures nationally and internationally on various topics, focusing primarily on the encounter between Buddhism and modernity. Michael Stone is a psychotherapist, dharma teacher, yoga teacher, author and activist, committed to the integration of traditional teachings with contemporary psychological and philosophical understanding. ID Project member Brian Naas interviews Gil Fronsdal on the Evolution of American Buddhism. This is the second of a two part interview. Gil Fronsdal is the primary teacher for the Insight Meditation Center in Redwood City, California; he has been teaching since 1990. He has practiced Zen and Vipassana in the U.S. and Asia since 1975. He was a Theravada monk in Burma in 1985, and in 1989 began training with Jack Kornfield to be a Vipassana teacher. Gil teaches at Spirit Rock Meditation Centerwhere he is part of its Teachers Council.Gil was ordained as a Soto Zen priest at the San Francisco Zen Center in 1982, and in 1995 received Dharma Transmission from Mel Weitsman, the abbot of the Berkeley Zen Center. He is currently serving on the SF Zen Center Elders’ Council. Gil has an undergraduate degree in agriculture from U.C. Davis where he was active in promoting the field of sustainable farming. In 1998 he received a PhD in Religious Studies from Stanford University studying the earliest developments of the bodhisattva ideal. He is the author of The Issue at Hand, essays on mindfulness practice, and the translator of The Dhammapada, published by Shambhala Publications.
