This week, IDP Prison Project Coordinator Michael Carey interviews Kinloch C Walpole Abbot of the Gateless Gate Zen Center in Gainesville Florida. They discuss Kinloch's involvement with the prison population including his work faciliting meditation while inside prison as well as facilitating reentry after prison. Michael also speaks with members of Abbot Walpole's program about their experiences inside and out of prison. This is the first of a two part interview. Michael Carey is the coordinator for the IDP's Prison Project. He is the director of the College Initiative, a non-profit reentry education organization that supports formerly incarcerated peopl in their pursuit of higher education. Kinloch C. Walpole is the abbot of the Gateless Gate Zen Center in Gainesville, Florida. Trained in Zen under the instruction of Zen Master Bon Haeng (Mark Houghton), he is the dharma heir of Zen Master Seung Sahn. Abbot Walpole lives at the Center year round and is very active in its day-to-day activities, making him highly accessible to students. He has developed a distinctive program of study that embraces every aspect of daily life.

The is the second of a two part interview. Andy Karr is a writer, photographer, longtime meditator, and Buddhist teacher. He trained intensively with two of the great founding teachers of Western Buddhism: Shunryu Suzuki Roshi , and Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche. He has also been a Miksang student, and contemplative photographer since the late 1990s. He is the author of Contemplating Reality, a series of investigations into the nature of mind and the phenomenal world, that was published by Shambhala in 2007. Andy is also the co-author of The Practice of Contemplative Photography - Seeng the World with Fresh Eyes, due for release by Shambhala Pulications in April 2011.

Andy Karr is a writer, photographer, longtime meditator, and Buddhist teacher. Gina Sharpe is a founding teacher and a member of the Board of Directors of New York Insight Meditation Center. She has studied and practiced meditation in Asia and the United States. She was trained as a Retreat Teacher under the mentorship of Jack Kornfield. She is also a graduate of the first Spirit Rock Community Dharma Leaders Program. She has been teaching since 1995. Pilar Jennings, Ph.D. is a writer and researcher who has focused on the clinical applications of Buddhist meditation practice. She received her Ph.D. in Psychiatry and Religion from Union Theological Seminary, and has been working with patients and their families through the Harlem Family Institute since 2004. Prior to this training, she earned a Masters degree in medical anthropology from Columbia University, and a Bachelors degree in interdisciplinary writing from Barnard College. Pilar is a long-term practitioner of Tibetan and Vipassana Buddhism, and has studied with senior teachers in both traditions. Her recent book Mixing Minds, released through Wisdom Publications, explores the interpersonal dynamics between Buddhist teachers and their Western students, in comparison to the relationships between psychoanalysts and their patients.
