 Parents Of Children With Cancer (Part-2) - Patti Wood 2/5/16 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 411

Patti Wood joins Mark Alyn talk about her book, Helping to Heal. The book is written for parents of children with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses and is being widely distributed through hospitals, treatment centers, support groups and Ronald McDonald Houses all over the country.Caring for a seriously ill child is one of the greatest challenges of parenting. It is a time when your instinct is to nurture and protect, but you may have feelings of helplessness and frustration while doctors and other health care professionals manage your child’s illness.Helping to Heal is a practical and engaging guidebook that helps parents become important partners in their child’s healing process by encouraging them to prepare nutritious, nutrient-dense meals and provide a safe home environment, two things that only parents can provide.A heightened interest in the role of nutrition in healing and the recent focus on children’s unique vulnerability to environmental toxins make this book not only useful, but very timely. The most recent President’s Cancer Panel Report, the American Academy of Pediatric’s “Handbook of Pediatric Environmental Health” and a new statement by the American Cancer Society vigorously support the book’s message and it has been enthusiastically embraced by doctors, nutritionists and researchers working on children’s environmental health issues around the world.Patti shares her thoughts on the book with Mark, as well as some of the other projects that her non-profit is currently engaged in, including the issue of wireless radiation exposures and potential impacts on human health.

Thyroid Could Be The Problem, Beyond Diet and Exercise (Part 1) - Gil Kajiki M.D 2/5/16 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 714

Joining Late Night Health this week is Gil Kajiki, MD. If you’ve tried time and again to lose weight after the holidays, but have been stymied, you may not have been looking in the right place for answers. Beyond diet and exercise, the problem could be your thyroid. But your usual battery of standard thyroid tests may not detect the problem. Dr. Kajiki is the nation’s leading expert in non-drug treatment for hypothyroidism, low thyroid and Hashimoto’s disease; he is the founder of the Valley Thyroid Institute, a worldwide treatment center. Dr. Kajiki contends that not just weight issues, many other illnesses and conditions can be effectively treated when the right tests are applied. There is no one-size fits all solution for thyroid dysfunction. Without the distinctive legion of tests that Dr. Kajiki has identified, most doctors miss the signs and are mystified that patients aren’t getting well. To find the right treatment that pinpoints the specific root cause of a patient’s thyroid-related ailment or auto-immune problem, Dr. Kajiki created the internationally acclaimed Kajiki Protocol. He engages a wide variety of testing procedures and indicators, including: 11 different thyroid tests instead of the standard three, inflammatory blood markers, immune system challenges, gastro-intestinal microbial, leaky gut testing, adrenal dysfunction, urinary hormone metabolites and more.Dr. Kajiki tells Mark , “People that have lab tests results that are considered “normal”, by their doctor, but still feel lousy typically, have the best outcomes. The treatment protocols I develop are specific to each patient, and are created based on lab test results and not just symptoms. I do not use a “cookie cutter” recipe for anyone. Our protocols-- all natural and drug-free--are for difficult thyroid and Auto-Immune cases that just don’t respond well to medication, or for the person that wants to minimize medication. I work in conjunction with a patient’s current physician should they still need medications for any reason.”

Going Red for Women (Part 1) - Dr. Dana Cohen 01/29/16 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 714

The “Going Red for Women” campaign will flourish in February with women sporting their red dresses in support of heart health month, but are women really getting the prevention message? Young women pursuing a career and raising a family are most at risk as they often put off medical care not realizing they are a candidate for a heart attack or stroke.According to a recent study published in JAMA Internal Medicine, young women who've had a heart attack will have a twenty fold increased risk of a second heart attack, and a tripled risk of a first stroke, according to findings. Two more recent studies published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology confirm that women under the age of 55 are often left in the dark when it comes to knowing the risk factors of heart disease.“When it comes to heart health, women have different warning signs and nutritional needs,” says Dana Cohen, M.D., a nationally renowned internal and integrative medicine specialist whose multi-disciplinary approach has helped treat thousands of patients using a variety of conventional and complementary therapies.“One of the most important connections doctors need to make for their female patients is the relationship between heart and bone health.”For example, Cohen says calcium supplementation plays an important role for building bones but can cause problems for the heart if another nutrient, vitamin K2, is missing from the calcium supplement.“Your doctor may advise you to stop taking calcium supplements, but that’s not the solution,” said Cohen. “Calcium needs to be taken along with vitamin K2, as it plays a critical role of regulating calcium metabolism by keeping the calcium in your bones and out of your arteries where calcium buildup can lead to artery clogging that can cause heart disease and strokes.”
