Dr. Friedman and Kim chew on heartburn drug dangers, lazy Americans and the new fad of snorting chocolate powder.Dr. Friedman and Kim chew on heartburn drug dangers, lazy Americans and the new fad of snorting chocolate powder. Heartburn Drugs Linked to Greater Mortality Over 50 million people in the U.S. are on proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). The three most popular are Prilosec, Nexium and Prevacid. According to a recent study conducted at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, these drugs are tied to a wide range of side effects including fractures, dementia, heart disease, pneumonia, kidney disease and death. Research shows PPIs may shorten the protective chromosome ends known as telomeres, which means a shorter lifespan. USA Ranks as One of the World's Laziest Countries A recent USA Today headline reads: "The U.S. is one of the world's laziest countries — and it's making us fat!" That’s among the findings of a study by Stanford University researchers that tracked the walking activity of 700,000 people in 46 countries around the world. The least lazy, according to this study, are the Chinese, particularly those in Hong Kong, where people average 2,000 more steps per day than Americans. America ranks fourth from the bottom of all the 46 countries they researched. We live in a nation of couch potatoes, computer workers and video gamers. Snorting Chocolate is the Latest Fad The latest health fad is snorting chocolate powder! Why eat your chocolate when you can snort it up your nose like cocaine!? For $24.99 you can get a 10-serving tin of Coco Loko, a cacao-based powder that you snort. According to the company website, snorting cocoa with a few other added herbs brings a feeling euphoria and a serotonin increase that elevates your mood to a point of ecstasy.  Encore Episode: Does Having ADHD Work to Your Advantage? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

How can it be possible that some of the most accomplished actors, business professionals and athletes all suffer from ADHD?What if impulsiveness, distractibility, impatience, and the other ADHD symptoms we’re dead-set on overcoming are actually disguised talents like curiosity, adventurousness, and resilience? Might that explain why ADHD-diagnosed people are noticeably over-represented in prestigious demographics like entrepreneurs and professional baseball players? This is the contention of Dale Archer, MD, in his newest book, The ADHD Advantage. Dr. Archer, a board-certified psychiatrist and Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, is the New York Times bestselling author of Better Than Normal: How What Makes You Different Can Make You Exceptional and a popular source of expert psychological advice. Coconut Oil Dangerous? Scientific research has proven coconut oil's health benefits, but the American Heart Association just released a statement claiming coconut oil is as unhealthy as beef fat and butter, resulting in increased risk of heart attack and stroke. What's the real scoop? The old way of looking at cholesterol needs to be reevaluated. The benefits of coconut oil outweigh the detriments. Urine in Pools Creates Toxic Compound Mixing urine with pool chemicals can create a toxic compound that affects the lungs, heart and central nervous system. A clean pool should have little-to-no chemical smell. Don't be afraid to ask how recently the pool was cleaned.  The good news is more pools are using salt water solutions, avoiding chemicals. Light-to-Moderate Drinking Poses Potential Health Hazards A new study shows consuming low-to-moderate levels of alcohol can cause an increased risk of cancer, heart disease and dementia; just as much as heavy drinking. More research may be needed to confirm these findings.  Don't miss these intriguing topics!

She joins Dr. Friedman to explain why the Mediterranean Diet is not the healthiest, and how we might be replacing trans-fats with something even worse. The startling history on diet and nutrition, outlined in Nina's new book, The Big Fat Surprise, demonstrates how nutrition science has gotten it so wrong: how overzealous researchers, through a combination of ego, bias, and premature institutional consensus, have allowed dangerous misrepresentations to become dietary dogma.  Stressed Out? Flex Your Resilience Muscles with Anne Grady | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

How can you find the courage and resilience to triumph over daily stressors? How can you find the courage and resilience to triumph over daily stressors? Anne Grady knows what it’s like overcome unbelievable odds. After being told repeatedly, "You're so strong, how do you do it?" She realized this... you don't have to be "so strong," you just have to be strong enough.  Humans hate being uncomfortable. We intrinsically resist change. Part of growing resilience and strength is navigating the difficult times.  If you're not happy with results in your life, you have to make a change. Are you willing to make the decision to shift your story and reframe your thoughts? Excuses can be real, but are they serving you? Look at each decision you make and ask, "Will this get me closer to or further away from my goal?" Anne also says that you have to recognize your relationship with stress. Are you making daily decisions that exacerbate it? Social media is an instigator. How much time are you spending on your device or in wait for that "ping" alerting you of a like or retweet? Proactively manage your struggles. You CAN log out of Facebook.  It's not about getting rid of the stress completely; it's always going to be there. Take the steps to mitigate it. What works for others might not work for you. Just because your friend can chill out with kale smoothies and yoga, doesn't mean that will have any impact on you. Finally, enlist the help of a therapist or life coach who can give you objective feedback. If not one of those options, turn to a spouse, significant other or best friend who will tell you what you might not want to hear. Allowing negative thoughts and emotions to fester will only bring you further down the rabbit hole. Listen as Anne joins Dr. Friedman to share how she found courage, strength and triumph (and still works towards it), as well as some practical steps you can take to start reducing stress in your own life.

Avoid unhealthy fats, processed foods, sugar and artificial ingredients. New techniques are available to address hair loss, but an individual should do everything he or she can to prevent further hair deterioration prior to undergoing any type of procedure. William “Bill” Edwards, Founder & CEO of Regenix, joins host Dr. David Friedman to explain the unique reasons for hair loss in men and women, as well as viable solutions to combat the occurrence.

Chew on This with Kim Barnouin: Bath Benefits, Aluminum Foil Dangers & Calorie Counting Cons | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Dr. Friedman and Kim chew on the benefits of taking a hot bath, aluminum foil dangers, and the detriments of counting calories to lose weight.Dr. Friedman and Kim chew on the benefits of taking a hot bath, aluminum foil dangers, and the detriments of counting calories to lose weight. Baths Burn Calories? Research shows that taking a hot bath may burn as many calories as exercising. It can also provide positive inflammatory responses within your body, similar to the body's reaction to exercise, which allows for a reduced risk for diabetes, stroke and heart disease. No gym membership required. Soaking in a bath with magnesium sulfate with a few drops of essential oils only adds to the physiological benefits. Aluminum Foil Dangers World Health Organization (WHO) research has shown that some of the aluminum in foil can leach into your food and cause health problems, including dementia, Alzheimer's disease and kidney disease. The issue becomes worse with highly acidic foods and cooking foods at high temperatures. Instead, use parchment paper, which is safe and has the added benefit of not sticking to your food. "Most Popular Diet" Doesn't Mean It's Effective Alternative Daily News reports that the most popular diet during the last century has been counting calories. However, this method can put your body in a famine mode, causing you to gain back all the weight lost (and more). It's more important to understand what your body needs to thrive. Don't miss these intriguing topics!
