Whenever you’re doing something entirely new or original there is very little you can point to that suggests that what you are doing is a good idea. If you can point to past results to support your innovation, chances are you are not really innovating. The pursuit of originality is fraught with discomfort. But the ability to recognise the emotion of discomfort, and see it as a sign that you are doing something truly innovative, is the sign of a real change-maker. What do you think is the number one trait a true pioneer needs to possess? Today the crew caught me in an angry rant before filming had started, so I ended up asking myself a question: Why do people complain about their circumstances in life but then refuse to put the hard work in to change it? Nothing pisses me off more than this. Businesses don’t build themselves. If you’re not happy with where you’re at in life, yet you have time to to watch McLeod’s Daughters (if that’s still a thing?), and go out drinking 6 nights a week then I have very little sympathy. I get asked a lot how to build and lead a high performance team, so today in an extra long episode I am giving you my entire framework, from recruitment right through to induction, on how to build a world class culture centred on people uniting around a purpose for the sake of performance. There are SO many myths about running your own business. The overnight success… build it and they will come… the list goes on. We’ve been chatting about these on Snapchat over the last week so today I address what I think are the 5 biggest myths. In the comments below… what business myths have you heard? The number one barrier for growth in early stage businesses is a lack of focus. We try to become everything for everybody and in doing so we end up being NOTHING to nobody. My advice to entrepreneurs is pick one thing and try to become the best in the world at it. Today a question about style turns into a deeper talk around why money should not be your driver in life and business. I’m not saying that money doesn’t matter, but that those who set out purely to make money often make far less than those who are driven by something greater. We filmed this episode of #AskJackD at the Entrepreneurs’ Harbour Cruise. There couldn’t be a better environment to take a question on how to leverage networking events. Thanks to everyone who came, it definitely was something special this year. When you are starting out you have to learn the basics, the fundamentals, the principles. You need to be hungry for knowledge. Once you have a grasp on that, your learning is done differently. You’ve taught yourself how to think and how to reimagine the future, so you get to a point where you need people to coach and guide you. Most of the world around you is made up of OPRs; other people's rules. Rules that they have constructed for themselves and probably for others, that they may even call fact or the truth. What I want people to realise today is that these rules don’t have to be your rules. If you’re not happy with your life, your work, your health, your education, you can change that. The fundamental premise that will enable you to take control of your life is first realising that you are in complete control and that you are creating yourself and the world around you every single day. In this episode I answer the greatest question that has ever been asked on #AskJackD to date… and I get ANGRY at anyone who has ever made an excuse for not following their dreams. Because I don’t buy into excuses, and you shouldn’t let yourself either because NOTHING is sadder than a dream left unfulfilled. This might shock you, but I don’t believe in work life balance. Why not? It positions work as the enemy, which it shouldn’t be. If you align what you do with what you love then work won’t be the enemy. It’s only when you’re not living on purpose, not pursuing your passion that work becomes “work”. The word ‘Hustle’ is getting thrown around a lot at the moment. People will tell you to ‘hustle harder’ if you want to be a successful entrepreneur. This isn’t always true. It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day hustle; the ‘busyness’ of running a business, that you forget to think bigger picture. You forget the vision behind the hustle. If you want to separate yourself, what you need to do is hustle smarter. Let vision guide your decisions. Have absolute clarity about where you want to be in 1 year from now, 3 years from now, and execute your ‘hustle’ accordingly. Breaking news: You don’t need a morning routine to be successful. A lot of people will tell you to wake up at a certain time, eat a bowl of granola, mediate and exercise because this is what successful people do. For some that might work, but for me it doesn’t.
