641: Bin Buddies: a mindful story and relaxation | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 16:57

Tamara Trash Can feels a little uncomfortable when Rhonda Recycling Bin arrives at the Ahway Island Animal Sanctuary's Visitors Center. Will the two become friends? Narrator: Female Story Begins: 4:01 Bin Buddies Excerpt: It was a sunny day on Ahway Island. The sun sparkled brilliantly on every part of the island, from the big snowy mountains in the north to the calm sandy beaches along the coast. Even the Ahway Island Sanctuary was bathed in sunlight. The animals were out and about, joyously playing or relaxing in the warm sun. Since it was so nice out, the Visitor Center in the Sanctuary was filled to the brim with excited guests. Tamara Trashcan was happy to see it all from her nice little corner in the Visitor Center.   Tamara Trashcan sat right next to the guest check-in station. From there, Tamara was able to see and help all the friendly guests. She even helped the little kids when they needed to throw away their candy wrappers or chewing gum. She took all the trash in through the little opening on the top of her big gray lid.   Tamara loved helping guests who needed to get rid of their trash in a responsible way, instead of littering. It was important to Tamara that she collect all the trash so that it wouldn’t cause the Sanctuary paths to get all messy! Some days, Tamara wouldn’t have to carry a lot of trash but on other days, especially busy days, she felt like she was carrying a little too much. But Tamara loved to help anyway, even if she did get a little full sometimes. Today’s Meditation: Love flows through you in this meditation as you imagine a baby fawn and mama deer.  280. Home on Ahway Island: an original short story for kids | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 18:29

The Sparkling Train shares the newly discovered island name, Ahway Island, with the airplanes. Hello everyone!  We hope you enjoyed our new story this week. Now, welcome to Favorite Friday! Sometimes we like to listen to our favorites again. Please enjoy “Home on Ahway Island” and we’ll be back with a new story on Monday! Narrator: Female Story Begins: 8:34 Home on Ahway Island Excerpt: Energy filled the sparkling train as the morning sun warmed its solar cells.  The train smiled, eager for the day to start.  Knowing that the planes were waiting to hear the name of their island, the solar train felt excited to share the dragon’s news.  But that would have to wait until all the passengers had reached their destinations.  Powered up with sunlight, the sparkling train checked to see who was waiting for the morning route. Many cheerful people were lined up on the platform, ready to begin their day. The sparkling train opened its doors with a whoosh and the passengers filed on board.  Once everyone was seated the train gently rolled forward to begin its route.  Slowly the train made its way through the land of the people picking up and dropping off until there were no passengers left on board.   Knowing that there would be a nice break before lunch the train chugged over to the airport.  As it approached the airplanes’ hangar the train blew its happy whistle to let them know it was there.  The train rolled to a stop outside the hangar. The planes and helicopter rolled outside to meet it. Today’s Meditation: Today, enjoy the feeling of your body relaxing into the warm sand on a sunny beach.  639: Sadie’s Sandy Day: a calming meditation and story | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 20:08

Sadie Seahorse feels safe near the sand bed. A new friend shows up to keep her company. Narrator: Male Story Begins: 4:41 Sadie's Sandy Day Excerpt: It was a beautiful, sunny day on Ahway Island. Seagulls flew gracefully just above the blue waters as the wind gently pushed and pulled the waves. There was a gentle whoosh sound every time the waves moved back and forth. The ocean world of Ahway Island seemed extra lively and joyful today.   Below the waves, there were many fish swimming around the inky expanse of waters. Most of the fish were eagerly swimming and chatting with friends…but not Sadie Seahorse. Sadie was swimming close to the seafloor, near the kelp and sand. Sadie didn't want to go anywhere farther out than that today. She felt safe and secure near the sand.   Recently, Sadie realized she felt quite uncomfortable if she was around too many other fish too often. Lots of fish were fast swimmers, lots of fish were loud, and lots of fish wanted to talk to everyone. Sadie would start to feel nervous around these fish if she was around them very long. More and more, Sadie tried to stay close to the sand and away from the crowded open waters. She called the sand her ‘safety sand.’ Today’s Meditation: Enjoy the feeling of your body relaxing into the warm sand on a sunny beach. They were on their way to meet Rob raccoon for a little bit of mischief.  With a sigh and a deep dragon breath in and out the dragon shared that the island’s name was Ahway Island. Narrator: Female Story Begins: 3:44 Articulate Airplanes Excerpt: Recently, there had been a run of stormy weather on Ahway Island. Earlier in the week, there had been a tornado warning. No tornados had actually struck the island, but it was enough to shut down the Ahway Island Airport for a while. And both yesterday and today there were strong winds and lightning, so the Airport staff had decided that the small airplanes, Herb, Holly, Hawk, and Hazel, as well as Harmony Helicopter, should all stay safely inside their hangar instead of risking flight.   So, this afternoon, once again, all the little airplanes were safely tucked away in the hangar, as they had been for several days.   Harmony gave a sigh. “Ugh! I’m tired of this bad weather. I want to go out in the sky and play!”   Today’s Meditation: Imagine floating on a cloud, and relax into the feeling of lightness. The two friends had plans to go exploring today.  Anora hurried over to the big rock with the sparkling pink crystals at the edge of the forest.  Then she heard a voice say, “I’m right behind you!” with a giggle.   Anora turned around, knowing immediately who it was, and saw Alice quickly catching up with her.  The girls giggled as their eyes met.   “Are you ready to go exploring?” Anora jumped as she asked excitedly.   “I could hardly wait!” Alice said jumping along with her. “I even wore my boots in case there was mud.”   “Me too!” Anora said pointing to her feet.  Then she stopped jumping and asked, “Hey, what’s that?”   Anora had noticed a little toad sitting next to the sparkly rock.  She bent over to touch the toad and the toad hopped just out of Anora’s reach. Narrator: Male Story Begins: 5:11 Squirrely Games Excerpt: Peanut Squirrel yawned. She and her friend Nutsy Squirrel had just finished their lunch of delicious nuts and were sitting cozily next to the roots of a big oak tree on a quiet Ahway Island Street.   “Those nuts were tasty!” said Nutsy chattily.   “Mmhmm…” responded Peanut. She felt too sleepy to actually say a whole sentence. She allowed her eyes to drift shut.   “Now that we’re done eating,” continued Nutsy, “Do you want to go play tag?”   “Not right now,” said Peanut, yawning again. “I’m kind of sleepy.”   “Okay!” replied Nutsy, undeterred. He wasn’t quite back up to his usual energy level after their big meal, but he was quickly regaining full power.   “Yes, those nuts were sure delicious,” he continued in his loud, fast-paced vocal style. “You’ve got to love oak trees and their acorns! We’re lucky there are so many of them around here…so many trees, I mean, but acorns, too, I guess. Of course, I like walnuts, too. Walnuts are great. Mrs. Martinez has the best walnut tree in the neighborhood – in my opinion. Don’t you think so, Peanut? And I know we both love almonds when we can get them, which isn’t as often as you or I would like, for sure! Did I ever tell you about the time I found a macadamia nut lying around one of the houses? That was a treat. Buttery, soft…In fact, it tasted like…”   “Yes,” Peanut interrupted him. “You’ve told me about the macadamia nut, Nutsy.”   Today’s Meditation: Relax as you imagine sunlight warming you as you lie in a grassy meadow. Narrator: Female Story Begins: 12:02 Octopus Explorer Excerpt: Red light danced across the water as the sun set for the evening.  The island was blanketed by the night sky and soon twinkling white lights from the moon and stars reflected off of the sea.  As many animals settled down into their cozy beds, others began to wake up.  A soft purple glow filtered out from under a large rock. Odette the octopus stretched her arms and smiled.  She was ready to go out exploring.  Every time she left her rock home, she learned interesting things.  Curious what she might find today, the little octopus slowly slid out from under her rock. As she reached the open water, Odette opened her arms wide and gently floated like a parachute away from her home and down to the sea floor.   A warm purple glow surrounded her as the suckers on her arms released their light.  Odette listened carefully trying to decide where she would begin her new adventure. Splash, Splash the little octopus wondered what was making that sound. She propelled herself in the direction of the island shore. Splash, Splash, Splash. She looked out the window and watched the delightful bluebirds playing in the yard. From time to time, she whistled back when she heard them singing in the trees. Ruby June hoped that the birds could hear her, too.   She was still in her pajamas, but Ruby June was excited to start her day. Today, Ruby June was going to have a picnic with her mom and some family friends in the park. Ruby June’s mom, Ms. Guerdy, was in the kitchen making all the yummy food they were going to have. Ruby June was looking forward to the picnic. Her mom was making some of her favorite things, like potato salad. Ruby June had already asked her mom if she needed any help with the food preparation, but her mom had said she didn’t need any help right now. So, Ruby June just sat quietly at the table, thinking about the upcoming picnic.   The best part of the picnic was that Ruby June and her mom had invited Ruby June’s friend Henry Vasquez. Henry was Ruby June's best friend, and she was very excited to see him today. Henry and Ruby June loved playing together. They played in each other’s yards every weekend, and they especially enjoyed playing soccer together. Ruby June hoped they could play soccer at the park today, too. Sunshine easily covered the forest floor since the trees were just beginning to open their leaves.  The sun warmed a large pile of mud next a little oak tree.  The mud slowly dried as sunshine baked the moisture out.  Then the mud pile shifted slightly.  The dragon was beginning to wake from its second nap of the day.  The dragon had wanted to wave goodbye to its friends Charlie and Terry truck when their engines began to rumble, so the dragon had taken a break from its first little nap.  After the trucks had left the muddy dragon snuggled back down and fell asleep, looking very much like a mud pile.  Now the dragon did feel quite rested but found it difficult to move.  The mud had formed a hard shell around the dragon’s body.  The dragon sighed.  It was definitely time for a bath.  Slowly the dragon stood up, and some dried mud flaked off.  It was a good thing that the dragon had a nice spot to clean up inside its cave.   The dragon headed back to its cozy cave. As the dragon walked it became easier to move.  The animals scurried away, unsure of what new animal was wandering in the forest.  Noticing their reactions, the dragon realized just how dirty it had gotten. Narrator: Male Story Begins: 4:56 Cat Conundrum Excerpt: Kit Cat was feeling very contented and grateful in her new home. Her new family member, Marta, had adopted Kit from the Ahway Island Animal Shelter just last week, and Kit had already made herself at home in Marta’s little apartment. Although Kit’s favorite place in the entire apartment was definitely the window seat in the living room’s big picture window, Kit had found many other wonderful places to play, hide, and nap in Marta’s compact apartment.   For example, Marta had a cushy rocking chair in one corner of her bedroom. That was a very fun place to sit, because when Kit jumped up onto the seat, the chair rocked a little. Marta also had a big stack of moving boxes piled up in another corner of the room. Kit liked to climb on top of the pile and sit up there to get a good view of the rest of the room. And Marta had a large wicker laundry hamper in another corner of her bedroom – that was excellent place for a nap, particularly if Kit didn’t want anyone to bother her for a while. It was sometimes a little hard to climb out of since the hamper was pretty deep, but Kit just sank her claws into the wicker and with a little effort, hauled herself out.  272. Silly Scenery: a calming nap time story for children | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 18:20

Brianna, Rogelio, and Helen paint scenery for their play on a rainy day. Hello everyone!  We hope you enjoyed our new story this week. Now, welcome to Favorite Friday! Sometimes we like to listen to our favorites again. Please enjoy “Silly Scenery” and we’ll be back with a new story on Monday! Narrator: Female Story Begins: 8:13 Silly Scenery Excerpt: Raindrops rolled down the kitchen windows as Brianna gazed outside. A rumble shook the house, and the rain began to beat even stronger on the roof.  Brianna hoped her friends wouldn’t get too wet.  She felt excited! Today Helen and Rogelio were coming over to paint the scenery for their island play.  She had placed a pile of scrap paper on the table, along with white paper for them to paint on.  Three of her dad’s old shirts were hung neatly on a chair, waiting for their new life as art smocks to begin. The paints were neatly arranged so that Brianna Rogelio and Helen could all reach the colors they needed, and she had paper towels ready to go in case there was a spill. Brianna was a little worried that Helen would be messy, like last time.  She had never seen anyone get paint all over like that.  Although Brianna did have to admit that Helen’s paintings were pretty fantastic.   The rain slowed to a steady drip-drop and then she heard a knock on the door.  Brianna ran over and opened it.  Helen and Rogelio smiled and stepped inside. They had managed to find a good time to walk to the house. The rain had slowed considerably. “That was lucky!” Rogelio said.  629: Secret Superpower: a calming bedtime and nap time story for children | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 18:00

Lisa visits Mrs. Tang for help with her reading, and learns that she has a secret superpower! Narrator: Female Story Begins: 4:13 Secret Superpower Excerpt: Lisa sighed, swinging her legs under the chair in the little waiting room.   Her mother, sitting in the chair next to her, looked at Lisa. “You okay, honey?” her mother asked.   “I’m fine,” said Lisa.   “Maybe take some Dragon Breaths?” her mother suggested.   Lisa nodded. She took a deep Dragon Breath in and out . She was indeed mostly fine, but she was feeling a little frustrated. She took another deep Dragon Breath, in and out. She also felt bored waiting in this little room. Lisa took one more deep Dragon Breath, in and out.   The Dragon Breaths made her feel better, but she still felt discontented. Over the last year or so in school, Lisa and her class had been learning how to read. As a concept, Lisa thought reading was very cool. But in practice, she struggled with it. The letters just didn’t make sense sometimes, and it took her a long time to sound out words, even short ones. After talking to her parents and teachers about it, Lisa had taken some tests and found out she had something called dyslexia. Now, welcome to Favorite Friday! Sometimes we like to listen to our favorites again. Please enjoy “Imagination Power” and we’ll be back with a new story on Monday! Narrator: Male Story Begins: 9:21 Imagination Power Excerpt: Chance the cardboard box relaxed in the cozy sunbeam.  He admired the bright colorful drawings that the kids had made on his sides and wondered when they would have their next adventure.  The cardboard box heard a commotion in the kitchen and then the boy and girl raced into the living room to play.  Startled by the racket the little kitty quickly leapt out of the box. The girl said to her brother, “I think it’s your turn to pick what we do.” “Ok.” The boy said, shrugging his shoulders.   Chance wondered what they would do today as the boy hopped into the cardboard box. “Have a seat.” He said to his sister.  “We’re going to be submerging soon, so get comfortable.”   “Yes!” She exclaimed.  “I’ve always wanted to pilot a submarine!”   “Since it’s my idea, I think I should get to be the captain.” The boy said.  627: Vociferous Vacuum: a guided meditation and soothing story | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 19:12

Varnika Vacuum wants to be quieter, like her friend Bradley Broom. But Bradley wants to be more like Varnika. Will they both learn that they each have special strengths? Narrator: Male Story Begins: 4:32 Vociferous Vacuum Excerpt: Varnika Vacuum yawned. She was feeling a little bored sitting in the quiet utility room where she lived. Her family member, Mr. Love, liked to keep his house neat and tidy, and he vacuumed the whole house at least once every single week, usually on Saturdays. Varnika was often needed more on than just Saturdays, though. Mr. Love had a young daughter, Britney, who was sometimes a little messy. In any case, Varnika was always happy to help keep the Love household neat and tidy.   Varnika’s friend Bradley Broom was needed to help keep the house clean, too. Since Mr. Love loved cooking, the kitchen floor often got dirty. Sometimes, for kitchen messes, Bradley was a better choice for cleaning. But Varnika was still often called in if there was a big kitchen crisis.   Bradley hung on the wall on a hook right next to Varnika in the utility room. When the two of them weren’t working, they spent lots of time together, laughing and chatting. The two were very different, but they got along well and were good friends.
