Pope Francis recently released a document making conclusions about the Amazon Synod hosted in Rome last fall. In it, he discussed four dreams for the Amazon, including ending the victimization of the poor, ecological damage, and a need for commitment to evangelization. But this document isn't just for the Amazonian people. We all must take heed and view the suffering and in need around us as our problem and our responsibility, too.

This week we begin a 40-day Lenten journey intended to focus our hearts and minds on the glory that awaits us on Easter morning. The disciplines of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving are the perfect tools to convert our hearts to the will of God, helping us to change for the better and grow closer to our Lord this Lenten season.

Undoubtedly, one of the hardest challenges in life is to forgive. Jesus tells us to love our enemies and forgive those who have offended us, and to not hold grudges. Just remember how often God forgives us, and pray for the grace to realize that no offense is unforgivable.

In 1992, St. John Paul II designed Feb. 11 as the World Day of the Sick, a time to pray for those suffering from illnesses as well as for caregivers who work so hard to alleviate the illnesses and afflictions others are experiencing. Let us spend this week praying for those who are suffering, and for all healthcare workers, in thanksgiving for their caring and generous service.

Every February 8, we mark the International Day of Prayer and Awareness Against Human Trafficking. Every year far too many American children are lured into the commercial sex trade, a crime against all of humanity. We must be aware of the warning signs and commit ourselves to vigilance.

This weekend, as we watch playoff football games on TV, we recognize the traits of champions - confidence, commitment, sacrifice and discipline being among them. These are also traits of spiritual champions, and things we should keep in mind when we're on our own faith journeys.

As we begin the new year, resolve to entrust your life to God with childlike trust. Once you hand over your anxieties and worries to the Lord, the worries and complications of each new day will slowly melt away.
