The faithful joined Bishop Michael F. Burbidge to commemorate the Solemnity of All Saints at the Cathedral of St. Thomas More at the 12:05 p.m. Mass on Nov. 1. In his homily, Bishop Burbidge shared that All Saints Day reminds us that we are called to grow in holiness, and to become saints. “Sometimes we get paralyzed on that path to holiness because we become so aware of our sins. Yes, we are sinners, but so were the saints. Remember this: We cannot become holy unless it’s through God’s grace.”

The VA Attorney General announced an investigation into allegations of child sexual abuse by clergy and the handling of these cases by Church leaders and unveiled a clergy abuse hotline. Bishop Michael F. Burbidge thanked hundreds of homeschoolers and their parents for the gift that they are to the church during the second annual Mass for Homeschool Families at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Gainesville Oct. 19. In the reception that followed, families had the opportunity to talk with him and to receive his blessing. “Dear parents, thank you so much for taking seriously that responsibility of being the first teachers of the faith,” Bishop Burbidge said in his homily.

In a first for the Catholic Diocese of Arlington, a single Mass was used to honor both Respect Life Month and Disabilities Awareness Month at St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Vienna Oct. 7. The merging of the two provided an opportunity for Bishop Michael F. Burbidge to highlight the Catholic Church’s teaching on the sanctity of all life — including those with special needs.

Today is the feast of St. Francis of Assisi. Bishop Burbidge explains the essential role lay people play in the Diocese. The Diocese is reviewing all clergy files and plans to publish a list of priests and deacons who have been credibly accused of sexual abuse of a minor. A program within the Diocese for students with disabilities was honored nationally. The Diocese will host a retreat for people facing serious illnesses. The Synod of Bishops is happening now in Rome. October is Respect Life Month.
