It was truly a bizarre week of football that left fans, families and bookies divided. We go over some of the best games of the past week, some to look forward to this week and some of the major storylines of the week. Weird Week of Close Games Weirdest week, no one better than 8-8 last week in the NFL Pick ‘Em Pool. JKDabe is hot on John’s tail and Polyvistron now has a friend in PushECX at the bottom of the league. Who should move to London? Geoff is still big on the Jaguars moving to London, but John’s got other ideas. And Then There Were Five…Winless Teams Bengals, Browns, Giants, 49ers, Chargers, two pairs in the same state, but who’s the best? Defiance During The Anthem Donald Trump was very specific about how he felt with those who choose to kneel during the national anthem saying “Get that son of a bitch off the field.” Many owners released statements about how they felt, standing by their players and letting Trump know they did not appreciate the sentiment. Teams then put those words into action, kneeling, locking arms or in some cases staying in the locker room. Such acts have left the football world divided with some on the side of “good for them” and some on the side of “I’m never watching the NFL again.” AT&T even got involved, allowing refunds for DirectTV. From the ESPN article related to the topic: Once the season starts, fans usually are stuck with their subscription, but AT&T, which owns DirecTV, decided to change the policy due to the sensitivity of the issue. The price of the package, which allows fans to get out-of-market games, is about $280.

Sport of the Week – Shin Kicking | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 6:11

You know how you’ve got shins? Well, imagine a sport where all you did was slam your feet into someone elses shins until they fell down. That my good sir, is Shin Kicking. The year was 16-something in Dover’s Hill, named for founder of the Cotswold Olimpick Games, Robert Dover, near Chipping Campden. Know where that is? Neither did I. I looked it up though, it’s about two hours northwest of London. Training for the event used to include smacking your shins around with hammers to toughen up the bone. That was back in the 17th century though and things were pretty different back then. Yep, this sport was a mainstay in the Cotswold Olimpick Games until it folded in 1850. There was a resurgence of the games in the late 1900s and sure enough, shin-kicking is back in full force and enjoyed every year around June. Steel-toed boots are no longer allowed (as they were in the 1600s) and competitors generally stuff their pants with straw to dampen the blow. Current event organizers successfully claim no broken bones occur in their competitions, only bruising. What a relief. To begin, you grab the other lad by the collar or shoulders with arms straight, and start wailing on his shins with your soft shoes. The boundaries are basically non-existent, so competitors have the ability to gain leverage by moving around. When watching, you’ll see that shin kicking is essentially a hockey fight if there was no ice or sharp shoes and instead of punching you were kicking dudes. Whilst participating, if the pain becomes unbearable you can yell “SUFFICIENT!” Either that or the referee determines that a successful throw has taken place and will rule in favor of the thrower. A throw may only take place during the action of a kick. Just like toe wrestling, shin kicking matches are best two of three. A referee for the match uses a stick to control the match, stepping in if things get out of control. He or she has a large staff or stick, and is called a stickler. It’s rumored that this is where “stickler for the rules” originated. The Shin Kicking World Championships will be held again in 2018 where current champ Adam Miller will defend his title…and his shins. h/t to scungillipig for the reminder to add a video Here’s another with more of an idea of the rest of the Costwold Olimpick Games

 Orange and Purple Report – Week 3, 2017 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 7:26

Geoff and John take a look at how the Vikings and Browns are shaping up in the season so far and what’s to come here in Week 3. Sammy Bow Legs bowed out last week after warming up and the whole team suffered against the Steelers. Will they perform better against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers? Geoff thinks Case Keenum can lead them to victory. There’s hope for after week 6, but only if one Teddy Two Gloves truly comes home and off the PUP list. As for the Browns, things are looking up after a tough 5-turnover loss against the Ravens this past week. They go into Indianapolis favored (for the first time in quite a while) and DeShone Kizer is back in full health. Only problem now is who will he throw to with Mr. Glass from the wrists up sidelined for quite a while. Find us every week for the Orange and Purple Report!

Sport of the Week – Toe Wrestling | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 7:33

The World Toe Wrestling Championships, similar to thumb wrestling but with feet, were held a few weeks ago at Bentley Brook Inn, in Derbyshire, England. The rules are straight-forward and simple: Players must link toes and each player’s foot must touch flat on the other person’s foot. The opponents proceed to attempt to pin (capture or trap) the other’s foot for three seconds while avoiding the same. There are 3 rounds played on a best 2 out of 3 basis. First with the right foot, then left, and right again if necessary. Alan “Nasty” Nash won the men’s competition for the 14th time and Rebecca Beech won the women’s title after beating her own mother. The championships were first held in Staffordshire in 1974 after several drunken gentlemen wanted a sport only the British could win. If they invent it, they should be able to win. That held true for 2 years until 1976 when a Canadian won. But guys, feet are gross, you are probably saying. Yes, we know, but that’s why a podiatrist checks all feet before they enter the match. No corns, bunyans, warts, anything are allowed in toe wrestling, so at least it’s somewhat sanitary. In 1997 the World Toe Wrestling Federation applied for the inclusion of the sport in the Olympic Games, but the IOC is still laughing to this day. You’d sooner see something like Buzkashi in the Olympics than Toe Wrestling.

 Orange and Purple Report – Week 2, 2017 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 15:15

This week’s Orange and Purple Report recaps the week one excitement from both the Vikings and the Browns, how Big Ben should be fined, and what this next week holds for both teams. Geoff has a very convoluted way of connecting the Vikings to the Browns and John highlights the best parts from DeShone Kizer’s debut. Browns will take on the Ravens this week in Baltimore and the Vikings play the Steelers in Pittsburgh.

 #111.1 ⚽⚾ | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 28:36

The Indians are on a roll, the USMNT is limping toward a possible World Cup appearance and one London team is installing a retractable field that could lure an NFL team to Europe. That and much, much more on this week’s Grab Bag.
