Sport of the Week – Toe Wrestling

That One Sports Show show

Summary:
The World Toe Wrestling Championships, similar to thumb wrestling but with feet, were held a few weeks ago at Bentley Brook Inn, in Derbyshire, England.

The rules are straight-forward and simple:

Players must link toes and each player’s foot must touch flat on the other person’s foot.

The opponents proceed to attempt to pin (capture or trap) the other’s foot for three seconds while avoiding the same.

There are 3 rounds played on a best 2 out of 3 basis. First with the right foot, then left, and right again if necessary.

Alan “Nasty” Nash won the men’s competition for the 14th time and Rebecca Beech won the women’s title after beating her own mother.

The championships were first held in Staffordshire in 1974 after several drunken gentlemen wanted a sport only the British could win. If they invent it, they should be able to win. That held true for 2 years until 1976 when a Canadian won.

But guys, feet are gross, you are probably saying. Yes, we know, but that’s why a podiatrist checks all feet before they enter the match. No corns, bunyans, warts, anything are allowed in toe wrestling, so at least it’s somewhat sanitary.

In 1997 the World Toe Wrestling Federation applied for the inclusion of the sport in the Olympic Games, but the IOC is still laughing to this day. You’d sooner see something like Buzkashi in the Olympics than Toe Wrestling.
