Book Vs Movie Podcast

Batter up! The Margos are feeling like getting out in the sunshine after all of the months of cold and rain so we are redoing our Field of Dreams ep. (You’re welcome!) Yes, it was based on a book by Canadian author W.P. Kinsella called Shoeless Joe which was published in 1982.

Margo D. & Margo P. talk about the Michael Lewis 2003 book Moneyball and the 2011 film directed by Bennett Miller.  The movie stars Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill and we have lots of thoughts about which we prefer between the book and movie.   

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants from author Ann Brashares! In this episode, the Margos talk about the main plot points in the book with the characters of Lena Kaligaris, Tibby Rollins, Bridget Creeland and Carmen Lowell and their unique friendship. It’s such a sweet, loving tale--we can’t stop gushing about it!

We are here to make an offer you can’t refuse--a redo of Mario Puzo’s The Godfather. The Margos originally covered this book and movies (well, really movies) three years ago when we were both fighting the flu.  The result was kind of a meandering mess which we have always been embarrassed by vowed to redo one day as the material calls for nothing less than our best efforts.

The Margos are back and ready to get a little post-apocalyptic with the 1954 classic novella I Am Legend from prolific storyteller The film has been remade three times and the Margos decided to focus on the 2007 Will Smith film directed by Francis Lawrence (even though we both forgot about THAT dog scene--yikes!)

It’s time for another Stephen King Bonus ep and Margo D. is joined by Deana Marie of the Twisted Philly podcast to talk about the remake of Pet Sematary directed by Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer (Starry Eyes) and comparing it to the 1989 movie directed by Mary Lambert.

Fiddly dee! The Margos are feeling the vapors as we finally tackle Margaret Mitchell’s classic novel Gone With the Wind and this time, us two Yankees admit we need some help understanding the history of the book and its author. So for the first time ever--we asked another podcaster to join us for this discussion--Alicia from the Trashy Divorces podcast!

We have NO idea why it took us so long to finally tackle this charming book and movie--but we are so grateful to the listeners for suggesting this idea to us! The story of 19-year-old Flora Poste (recently orphaned) who comes to Cold Comfort Farm with a pittance of an inheritance who has the gift of helping people achieve their dreams.

The Margos finally take on the Alice Walker classic The Color Purple which won both the Pulitzer Prize for fiction and the National Book Award in 1983. It went on to be adapted into a film by none of than Steven Spielberg who has appeared on this show several times so we may just have to change our name to the “Steven Spielberg Presents” show soon! (Kidding!)

In this special “Stephen King Storytime” ep, Margo D. and Adam Riske who is a contributor to the excellent movie podcast F This Movie get together to talk about two rather weird Stephen King productions that they both love for nostalgic reasons. Then we wander off into some unexpected pop-culture tangents-- but let's get into the movies first.

In this ep, Margo D. talks with Juliette Miranda of the amazing Unwriteable Rant podcast. Margo D. starts with the novella The Breathing Method which appeared in the book Different Seasons and Juliette Miranda then talks about one of her favorite king short stories “You Know, The Have a Hell of a Band”

The Margos dive into a children’s classic novel--A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle and offer their thoughts on the 1962 novel that spawned four sequels and earned the love of millions of fans all over the world. The story of a plucky 13-year-old heroine (Meg Murry) who is smart, awkward and lonely due to her father missing for over four years has inspired readers for decades to truly be themselves and trust their instincts.

The Margos have a thing for espionage and intrigue in this ep talking about the Richard Condon 1959 novel The Manchurian Candidate which was bought by Frank Sinatra and United Artists films and made into a controversial movie in 1962.

The Margos are back with a new episode suggested to us by a listener--Brokeback Mountain. You didn’t know it was based on a short story written by Annie Proulx and appeared in the New Yorker in their October 13, 1997, issue. It won the National Magazine Award for fiction in 1998. Author Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana adapted it into the screenplay for the 2005 film directed by Ang Lee.

Welcome back to a new episode of Book Vs. Movie! This week, we are talking about the book/movie Mudbound which was written by Hillary Jordan (her debut novel) and directed by Dee Rees (Pariah, Bessie) who also co-wrote the adapted screenplay.  The Margos are not too ashamed to admit that this particular story and film gave us a big case of the sads. However, we are so in love with the writing, storytelling and acting here that we had a very hard time figuring out which we liked better.
