Book Vs Movie Podcast

Welcome back to a new episode of Book Vs. Movie! This week, we are talking about the book/movie Mudbound which was written by Hillary Jordan (her debut novel) and directed by Dee Rees (Pariah, Bessie) who also co-wrote the adapted screenplay. The Margos are not too ashamed to admit that this particular story and film gave us a big case of the sads. However, we are so in love with the writing, storytelling and acting here that we had a very hard time figuring out which we liked better.

The much beloved and missed Carrie Fisher won a Grammy Award this year for her audiobook The Princess Diarist so the Margos decided to replay one of their favorite episodes. Postcards From the Edge is Fisher’s first novel and the 1990 Meryl Streep/Shirley MacLaine movie are the perfect antidotes to the “I miss Carrie Fisher and her mother, Debbie Reynolds” blues.

Are you ready to learn a whole lot about Borderline Personality Disorder? You better damn well be because the Margos sure did after reading Girl Interrupted and man we just LOVE this book and movie discussion!

Hooray for another Stephen King bonus ep and yippee for all of us that Deana Marie of the Twisted Philly podcast is joining in for the fun, breezy discussion about a book that one of us likes WAY more than the other and the really cool Netflix adaptation!

Finally! The Margos have been asked to cover John Irving ‘s The Cider House Rules many times so we decided to tackle it during the coldest winter known in the U.S. for ages. Here we discuss the interesting career of Irving and how he adapted his own sprawling novel into a neat and tidy Miramax film. Book Vs Movie--which did we like better? Tune in to find out!

The Margos decided to celebrate the holiday season by honoring  the most joyful book/movie they have covered yet--"Auntie Mame!" They compare and contrast between the 1955 Dennis Patrick novel and the 1958 classic movie starring the incomparable Rosalind Russell. Have a sip of something bubbly and enjoy!  

The Margos continue their holiday celebrations with the all-time classic "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens. There have been hundreds of adaptations on the theme of Scrooge and is ultimate salvation but only one features stop motion animation and Jim Carey so we pair the discussion with Disney's A Christmas Carol directed by Book Vs Movie favorite Robert Zemeckis. We had SO much fun recording this episode!

The Margos get into the holiday spirit talking about the all-time holiday favorite "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" by Dr. Seuss. In this episode, we explore the differences between 1957 children's classic book and the two filmed properties of it (the 1966 TV classic and the 2000 rowdy Jim Carey version.

The Margos get a little spooky before the holiday season with the 1971 novel The Exorcist written by the very interesting William Peter Blatty. Based on a true-ish story about a boy possessed by a demon in the 1950s Blatty changed some of the key details to create this fiction classic.

Margo D. is joined in this bonus mini-episode with Chris Smith of The Dorking Out Show podcast to talk about one of the earlier Stephen King adaptations Firestarter. Smith listened to the book and they both watched the movie and decide which they like better--the book or the movie.

The Margos put their detective hats on and get all old-timey in this new ep talking about the number one fiction author of all time Agatha Christie and the 1974 Sidney Lumet classic Murder on the Orient Express. Inconceivable! The Margos decided to redo a Book Vs. Movie podcast ep by taking on one more time (and even better) the book/movie The Princess Bride. We are always surprised to find that our listeners did not realize that beloved classic movie was at one time a book. And that said book is very meta and multi-layered. Spoiler--we love BOTH of the versions of The Princess Bride and are so excited to be able to talk about it all once again!
