A fashion designer is said to have killed himself, and today his niece is seeking the services of Nero Wolfe to examine the circumstance of it. At a fashion show, the dame recognized her uncle, despite his disguise. Did others recognize him? Why would she even want to know? Her inheritance of half the company would resort back to her uncle if he were still alive. The only lead to the dead uncle is in the love of his life, his work. Archie is soon off to attend the fashion show. He rants on about the beauties to Nero, much to the annoyance of his rotund boss. When Inspector Kramer comes calling to learn about Carla, Nero keeps matters confidential, while Archie whisks their client away. What’s the latest development with dear old uncle? A body, fitting the description of the disguised uncle has been found. Will Nero be forced to turn his client over to the cops, or will he manage to pull off telling the truth, and protecting his client at the same time? To proceed, Nero demands to know whether Carla killed the man the police are investigating, and whether he was indeed her uncle. Satisfied with her claims, the next thing is to retrace her steps, and find out who else knew her uncle was back in town. Nero whittles it down to 4 others besides his client, and all are summoned to his office. Bernard the headstrong business partner, Demerest the executor of the estate, Polly a matriarchal eccentric, and Roper the practical minded hired help. Join Nero as he peels away the layers of the mystery, and exposes the big reveal. The twists keep coming, but Nero still has the solution to the matter.

As Johnny braves the sultry jungles of the South Seas, he offers voiceover to paint the picture for us, but he still doesn’t know where Tackett might be, or why he came to this tropic land. Was he driven by treasures, fame, the exotic lands, pure adventure, or something else? An unlikely guide claims to know where to find Able Tackett. A big break for Johnny? Maybe not. As deadly as the dangers of the jungle are, Johnny finds the troubles are compounded by murderous intent, not only from head hunters in the jungle, but from one guide who wants to kill the man and another who is in love with him. The insurance investigation for Johnny involves not the criminal with the goods, but the victim. It’s off to prison to interview the death row inmate to try to locate the beneficiary of the insurance policy. The character of Pearl’s mother is doubtful, but that’s not Johnny’s trouble, all he needs to do is find her for the pay out. Where would you start? Johnny goes to the last known residence, and traces the steps as far as he can. With the killer firmly behind bars, why would Pearl Carrassa’s mom be hiding out? Finding himself in Las Vegas, Johnny has a clash with a tough guy, and is rewarded with a thump on the head. A wealthy family is found who doesn’t seem to need the $5000 that Johnny has been trying to deliver, but other troubles involving narcotics smuggling is uncovered. The drugs are still of no interest to Johnny and his purposes, but it could explain the mystery behind the hiding and secrecy. If the family is less than needy, then why was the insurance policy be taken out? There seems to be some odd undercurrents with the disfunctional family. The story ends with some twists that come as a surprise, but if you think about it, the events really aren’t so surprising.

A dame needs Marlowe’s help. The mystery deepens to involve a damaged car, a hit and run, and just exactly who is the man in the high collar? Gunshots lead to a rising body count, and the pressure for Marlowe is cranked up a notch. Retracing his steps, Marlowe begins putting the pieces together. Secrets fall into Marlowe’s lap, and it becomes clear where his next step will be… right into the face of danger. In epilog, the secrets are laid out for all to see. Oppressive hands of bullies had done their work, but after Philip broke the ccontrol and power struggles, he spends a few moments in retrospective thought at the new hope for his ballerina client.

In reporting on his latest caper, Sam finds his secretary, Effie Perine, in uncharacteristic bad attitude. What is it about the big job for the local newspaper that has her mood turned on the dark side? The editor with the famous name of Woodrow Wilson, wants a detective to discover what’s behind a photo of a smoking gun, and why no murders, suicides, or shootings have been reported to the authorities since the incident. Checking out the building, a dame named Honey Cane, and her roommate, Sandra occupy the room where the gunshot was captured on film. More snooping reveals construction projects going on, including pouring a new concrete floor in the basement. He also discovers that a missing Max Barstow has folks acting nervous. Watch out Sam, the snooping could end up with a roughing up. After waking up in the alley, Sam is more determined than ever to dig into the case. It only means the more Sam shakes things up, the more dangers await him. What kind of con is going down? The musical transitions are missing in this rehearsal, but the story is still as action packed as ever. Johnny takes a job to investigate strange events with a railroad line. Cargo has been stolen from a boxcar, and before the insureance company pays out, Johnny gathers the details to validate the claim. Going beyond the usual questions to assess the loss, Johnny sets out to answer the question of who committed this crime, and how they did it. Is it an inside job? Was the brakeman involved? The cargo seems to have been offloaded along the track, and not at a depot. Clues turn up about a truck and aguy named Jake. The trail leads through seedy bars and tough guys. For his troubles, Johnny finds himself in a dark alley, and a fresh thump on his head. When he awakens, he learns the twist, and new score in this mystery. The goods are returned except for a barrel of jewlers rouge, and there’s a corpse. Who would kill over jewelers rouge, and take it over more valuable items? Johnny is determined to find out. More investigating turns up word of a big jewel heist, a hot blonde, and a hideout full of shady characters. Danger and death face off with Johnny, but will he be able to rescue his damsel in distress while he gets the missing goods back?

An old friend, and a boxing trainer drops a line to Philip Marlowe to help out with his latest boxer. As Marlowe goes to visit his pal Babe, we get an earful of picturesque description of the sights at the gym. Mr Weatherwax is an old timer with funds, and his recent discovery is investing in the new boxers. Danny is a hot headed boxer who is prideful, and likes to settle matters on his own terms. He won’t appreciate Marlowe trying to help him out. Trying to blend in, Marlowe poses as a reporter from Detroit. Rollie Lance is the owner of the place, but his neglected trophy wife may have just caught Marlowe in her trap. What game will Myra be playing with Marlowe? She has a past with a few of the fighters, including Danny Eagle. Will she blow his cover and spill the beans on his status as a private eye? Time to move fast. What will Philip get out of Danny? How about a thump on the head? Bodies begin to pile up, Rollie Lance is dead. Marlowe tries to gather clues before the cops get called out to investigate. Could it be the dame… the boxer… the old boxing investor… someone else? Danger keeps brewing, and Marlowe has to move to keep more bodies from popping up. Meeting up with a fellow gum shoe, Sam learns his client isn’t just a writer of soap operas, she writes several. Her melodramatic dictation of her latest tear jerker spills over into her dialog in telling Sam about her job for him. One of her radio shows ended when a staff member came up missing. Where is Martin, and what’s behind the mysterious telegram from Mexico? Cue the organ music for the scene transition. Even the lead actress, Nora, waxes dramatic as she relates to Sam the insensitive writer. Agatha just doesn’t understand Martin… she never did… she never will… (sob, sniff). What might be learned from Martin’s sister? Clearing his mind, and filling his belly, Sam steps back from the ordeal. Soon however, bodies begin piling up. When Martin shows up disheveled, he has that classic soap opera malady… amnesia. Continuing in melodramatic tones, Agatha and the doctor discuss how the amnesia came to plague young Martin. Meanwhile, Martin once again flees the scene. Sam’s investigating turns up a matter of blackmail. Not to mention murder. Sam untangles the mess, and delivers his report to his secretary, Effie Perine.

Get this and get it straight! It’s time for another episode with Gerald Moore, as Philip Marlowe. A long distance phone from a recently released convict has Philip rushing to help him out of a jam. Bay City is a corrupt town, and not only does it not look good for the former prisoner, but Philip will have plenty of legal prejudice against him as well. When the law in town is as corrupt a the outlaws, Marlowe has to learn the crooked game, and learn it fast. Why is his friend being set up? Can Philip keep a murder from going down? It’s sure to be rough going, but I’ll bet he unravels the mystery to see real justice is done.

Cashflow for Sam Spade and Effie Perine seems tight, but things could be going their way soon, Sam dictates his report on his job down at the race track. Hired to investigate the world of horse trainers, jockey’s, and the possibility of doping the ponies, Sam is filled in with the details. Gentle Joe Higgins is missing, and Sam hits the trail to see where he went. The crusty old dame at the boarding house isn’t helpful, other than parting Sam from a few bucks to grease the skids to a meet up with Joe. The meeting finds Sam, not with a thump on the head, but doped up and on the floor. The incident doesn’t put Joe in a good light in the doping issue, but when he ends up dead, the focus shifts to the next suspicious character. Evidence takes Sam back to the track, but all sign of a murder has been cleaned up. Frankie is satisfied the case is solved, and fires Sam, but the case won’t let Sam go. Dust settles, and not only is Joe alive, but he’s waiting in Sam’s office, and ready to tell his side of the story. Danger, gun play, and fist fights explode as matters take a new turn to resolve Joe’s shady past.

A fire in a little red schoolhouse has Johnny Dollar investigating in small town America. A land developer tells how the schoolhouse was his first project to renovate the town a number of years ago. He’s not happy about how the city butchered his plans. Is he upset enough to sabotage the building? Is he being set up? Johnny smells something fishy, and digs up evidence that somebody is telling lies. But who? The smoke blowing, and fast talking continue as Johnny tries to match up stories told to him by the builder, the city officials, and other players in the saga. Somebody has skeletons in their closet, and are being taken advantage of, listen in and be there when Johnny exposes the truth and confronts the real bad guys to end the oppression and set the scandal right.

Opening to an exciting scene of cops cornering a gunman on a rooftop, Philip Marlowe is on hand to tell how it all started. He took a job for a Mexican woman. Mrs Andrades tells about her son, and how he lost his job at a shipping warehouse. Is he really entangled with gangsters who hijacked a shipment of furs? Heading to the warehouse, Marlowe encounters a dame, and lots of attitude from the others who worked with Pedro. Helen Castile is Pedro’s girlfriend, and offers a little help. The situation soon involves bodies, and it looks like Pedro may be in too deep for even Marlowe to get him out. The chase is on, and we’re back at the scene of the rooftop gunman. Its up to Marlowe to confront Pedro, and let him know how he stands. The truth about the furs, the bodies, and Pedro comes out. Listen in as Philip explains the whole case, and how he put the clues together to unravel it.

A weekend of trouble, and a blood covered bullet in a snowball begins the report that Sam Spade shares with his secretary. His ski trip took a deadly turn from the moment he checked in, and learned of the characters at the picturesque lodge, each one with abnormal psychological profiles. A sleigh ride with a cute dame helps brighten the picture for Sam. Meeting Mr McCloud, Sam learns why he was hired. The high strung people may have their volatile moments, but for now they’re civilized. With an initial jolly time being had, Sam steps out to witness an accidental shooting at skiers on the slopes, where none were supposed to be. The claws and tempers emerge as jealousies burst into the picture. Cora, the estranged wife of McCloud is at the center of the male friends on the slopes. Bodies soon appear as Sam investigates. Playing his cards close to the vest, Sam returns to the lodge, where people wonder over what happened to the missing Paul. Rita sneaks into Sam’s room to share what she knows about missing guns, and whereabouts of the lodgers. Danger and gunplay loom in Sam’s future. It’s up to Sam to cut through the lies, and trap a killer.
