Ep 083: Jason Phelps: Elk Season Recap | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:20:57

This week I am joined by my good buddy, Jason Phelps of Phelps game calls to sit down and compare notes for the 2016 bow season. We wanted to share some hunting stories, but also to talk about lessons learned-or relearned in some cases. For me 2016 was a tough season but I had a lot of fun, and it was definitely an adventure. Every year brings a lot of new challenges, and being able to learn from those mistakes is what makes you a little bit better every year. “A smart man learns from his mistakes, but a wise man learns from the mistakes of others.” Elk hunting is no exception to that rule, and this episode has a ton wisdom and lessons stacked into some great hunting stories. We also talk about some exciting new stuff coming from Phelps Game Calls, that I was able to test out this season.  Show Notes: Bow season updates (4:05) Pro’s and Con’s of getting into elk early (6:45) Pro’s and Con’s of being in the remote backcountry (10:00) Phelps secret call (16:00) How to select you gets to be shooter and who gets to be caller (25:05) The joys of hunting public land (29:55) Taking second shots on wounded elk (42:05) Lessoned learned and and re-learned (44:50) Muzzleloader hunt (53:54) Gear review from this bow season (58:00) The new secret weapon from Phelps (1:05:30) Show Links: BSN Medical Leukotape P Sports Tape, 1 1/2 Inch x 15 Yard Lathrop and Sons Vortex Range Finder First Lite Aerowool Show Sponsor: This episode is brought to you by Greenbelly Meals. Greenbelly Meals are a true meal replacement bar. Chris Cage the founder, designed these bars to be 650 calories and 33% of your daily nutrition for 6 core nutrients. I have been using Greenbelly meals for the last two season now and I absolutely love them. They make a great option for a lunch or mid day meal and with two bars per resealable pack I can divide them up during the day. The best part is, they are actually really delicious. Greenbelly bars come in three different flavors and I honestly like all three,  I just order the 30 bar variety pack. These bars are one of the best options for quick, easy, light weight backcountry meals that I have ever come across, so check them out.  Ep 082: DIY Mule Deer Tips from Zach Bowhay | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:06:37

This week my buddy Zach Bowhay of Hunt DIY is back on to talk about mule deer hunting, specifically rifle mule deer hunting.  Zach is one of the best DIY hunters out there and consistently gets it done on big bucks with a rifle as well as with his bow. As a lot of guys are either full swing into chasing mule deer or if not ready to get out there, this episode will definitely get you pumped to hunt even harder. Zach has some great big buck stories and some great nuggets of wisdom. October can be a tricky time to chase big mule deer as many are making their transition between summer and rutting areas, learn how the top hunters find transition areas to capitalize on mature mule deer bucks.  Ep 081: Backpacking Tips for Cutting Pack Weight and Backcountry Meals | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:00:57

This week I am joined by one of my entrepreneur buddies to do a little bit different of an episode. Chris Cage is not a hunter, but he is an avid backpacker. One night we got to talking about the similarities of backpacking and backcountry hunting. Chris was one of those guys who thought all hunters just drive around in trucks or sit in heated blinds. So after a we got to talking and I was telling him about some of what we do he laughed and said we were just backpackers carrying bows. So we decided to do an episode and talk about what backcountry hunters could pickup from the lightweight backpacking world. We also talk about Chris’ company Greenbelly Meals,  and how he created his company out of a need for a true meal replacement the can actually sustain your daily nutritional needs. I have been using Chris’ bars for two years now and I love them they are an awesome product. Greenbelly has been blowing up in the backpacking world and I have been telling him that his product would also truly help a lot of backcountry hunters as well. So go check out Greenbelly Meals, give them a try I promise you won’t be disappointed. My personal favorite is the apricot one but there are three different flavors–just get a sample pack as they are all good. Like I said I would love to see Chris’ products reach the hunting world, its a great product and he is a great guy. Hope you guys enjoy this episode its a little bit different but it was an interesting conversation with my buddy Chris Cage of Greenbelly Meals.  Show Notes: * Backpacking background (5:00) * What we can learn from a backpackers (8:10) * Tent systems (13:22) * Cutting base weight (1:47) * Cooking system (22:43) * Clothing (24:43) * Most memorable moment of 5 month hike (28:17) * Creating Greenbelly Meals (36:35) * Meals vs Bars (41:50) * Go to meals on through hike (46:15) * Meal cravings when in the backcountry (49:25) * Water System (51:55)   Links: Greenbelly Meals Sawyer Products SP131 PointOne Squeeze Water Filter System with 3 Pouches BIG AGNES Fly Creek HV UL2 Tent Ash/Yellow Black One Size

Ep 080: Ben O’Brien: Hunting and the Story We Tell | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:25:46

This week I am joined by the hunting marketing manager from Yeti, Mr. Ben O’Brien (@bennyOB301). If you don’t know who Ben is, I am sure you have at least seen his work. Prior to his position at Yeti, Ben was the executive editor at Peterson Hunting. If there is one thing Ben O’Brien does extremely well, it is story telling. Ben understands the narrative of the hunter and conveys it very well. He is the guy at a party that you send non-hunters to because he can eloquently discuss what it means to be a hunter. In this episode, we cover everything from how to tell a great story, to the future of hunting, and even some liquor fueled internet debates with vegans. We bounce all over in this episode, but it is a great conversation about what it means to be a hunter in today’s day and age. Hope you guys enjoy the podcast with Mr. Ben O’Brien and as always, links to just about everything we talk about including documentaries, videos, and more are in the show notes. While you’re there be sure to check out the new Rich Outdoors swag, including The Rich Outdoors custom Phelps e-z estrus cow calls.  Ep 079: Wayne Carlton: An Elk Hunting Legend | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:00:21

Welcome to the podcast, today I am joined by one of my hunting idols, Mr. Wayne Carlton. I grew up watching Wayne’s hunting videos and was obsessed with calling elk and the various sounds he could make with a diaphragm. To say it was an honor to get the opportunity to chat with Mr. Carlton is an understatement. In fact the very reason I started the podcast is to be able to ask guys like Wayne Carlton questions and pick their brain on elk hunting. In this episode Wayne shares some great tips for elk calling, elk calling strategies elk hunting stories and everything in between. Wayne truly is one I would put in the elk hunting hall of fame, and has probably forgot more about elk hunting then I will ever know. We also talk about Wayne’s newest project Native by Carlton and some of the products he has created over the years of elk hunting. Hope you enjoy my conversation with elk hunting legend Mr. Wayne Carlton.  Show Notes: * An interest in calling elk (6:00) * The early days of elk calls (8:00) * The evolution of elk calls (10:08) * Elk Vocabulary vs emotion calling (15:25) * The difference between successful and unsuccessful callers (17:58) * Calling Strategies for mid day (18:30) * Getting in front of moving bulls (22:15) * Calling tactics (24:30) * The biggest mistake of hunters today (29:47) * Locating elk (31:30) * Creating excitement in elk calling (35:30) * Growler bulls (37:30) * Native by Carlton (42:10) * Elk decoys (42:37) * The most under rated elk hunting product (50:10) * Getting away from people (56:25) Show Links: Native by Carlton Butt Head Decoy Cats Paws

You are not going to believe this hunting story! Lorenzo Sartini (@lorenzo_sartini11) joins the podcast to share a truly unbelievable sheep hunt that he just returned from with the best hunting partner one can have, his dad. I honestly don’t think you could write a fiction story as well as Lorenzo’s recent dall sheep hunt with his dad played out. A truly epic adventure that to me is what hunting is all about. In this episode we cover a ton of great stuff from how to really obtain your hunting goals and hunt more, to social media and its effects on hunting. We also talk about tag strategies, over the counter hunts, and what it means to put the work in.  We bounce around a bit but cover some great topics throughout the show, however Lorenzo’s trip to sheep and caribou country with his dads is worth the listen on its own.  Ep 077: David Long: Public Land Mulies, Running, and Backcountry Gear | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:00:51

Today I am joined by legendary DIY mule deer hunter and ultra marathon runner David Long. David wrote a great book, Public Land Mulies: The bottom Line, that inspired me years ago and it was such a pleasure getting to chat with him. David is not only an amazing hunter who continuously gets it done in the high country of Wyoming and Colorado, but he also likes to run 100 mile ultra marathons for fun. We chat about whether or not being in ultra marathon shape really makes you a better hunter, and how ultra marathons have attributed to his success. One thing David is known for is having the lightest hunting pack around. I love how he pulls from other industries like pack backers and runners to find the best gear for his back country hunts. We also go over some of his new book and what he considers the 7 attributes of a successful hunter.  David’s Book: Public Land Mulies: The Bottom Line Show Notes: * David’s books * Wyoming’s Finest Mule deer (02:25) * Public Land Mulies: The Bottom Line (03:00) * The mule deer obsession at an early age (04:10) * Learn from every mistake (05:15) * Thought on buck behavior (08:40) * High country buck movement (11:40) * Patience is a virtue in the back country (14:00) * Focusing on one particular buck (16:45) * What signifies a green light to attempt a stalk (18:47) * What are some red flags that would make you hold off on a stalk (21:30) * Stalking in high country (23:05) * Scouting for public land mulies (24:00) * Ultra marthon shape (27:45) * The mental game (34:05) *  7 Attributes of a successful hunter (35:40) – Time in the woods – Proficient glassing skils – Behavioral knowledge – Read mule deer country – Equipment – Physically fit – True grit * Finding success on public land mulies(37:30) * David’s new mule deer book (39:45) * David’s gear for public land mulies(43:20) * Best piece o gear under $100 bucks (51:30) * Meals/food (52:55) David’s Gear List: Early Season Backcountry Archery Gear List * Stone Glacier Sky Archer 6200 backpack 80 oz * Hilleberg Enan tent 37.4 oz * Katabatic Gear Palisade quilt 19.3 oz * Therm-a-rest NeoAir XLite Regular,Marigold * Jetboil Flashlite Personal Cooking System – Carbon 11.4 oz * Jetboil Jetpower 4-Season Fuel Blend, 100 Gram 7.2 oz * Sea to Summit mug 3.

Ep 076: Comparing Pack Animals For Backcountry Hunting | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:37:04

Welcome to the podcast we have an awesome show for you today this episode is something that I have wanted to do for a long time. I have always wanted to sit down and compare various pack animals and see what the pros and cons are. Originally I planned to make this three, 20 minute sections but there are just too many interesting questions to shut me up at 20 minutes, so this ended up being kind of a long podcast. I think over all this is a great resources to get started with when weighing some of the options for using pack animals. There is still a ton of information that did not get added and I still want to dive into some more pack topics in future episodes. To kick this episode off we are chatting with our good friend Ms. Rachel Ahtila who was on the podcast back in Episode 48, so if you want to know Rachel a little better be sure to go back and check out that episode as well. Rachel is a sheep guide in Canada and has a ton of experience with horses in the backcountry. One thing to note, and I believe we talk about this, is that the needs for horses in the backcountry up there are far different than the average bow or rifle hunter in the lower 48 just looking to access more country or for getting meat out. Still overall some great info and some great insight into some of the advantages and limitations of using stock. In the second bit Rachel joins me on the call with Beau Baty, of Wilderness Ridge Trail Llamas to chat about using lamas to access the backcountry. One interesting things is that Beau comes from a 4th generation outfitter and was raised using nothing but horses and mules but now finds that llamas meet his needs the best. To wrap of our packing episode, fellow podcaster and avid goat packer Marc Warnke of Outdoors International and gothunts.com  joins me for a super interesting talk all pack goats. I hope you guys enjoy this episode.   Welcome to the podcast we have an awesome show for you today this episode is something that I have wanted to do for a long time.  Ep 075: Zach Owens: Antelope Hunting | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:13:29

I had a blast chatting with Zach Owens (@beyond_the_backcountry) about antelope hunting and his upcoming antelope tag in Idaho. Zach is an Idaho resident and gets to hunt antelope nearly every year. We talk mainly about bow hunting antelope, but a lot of the tactics we cover would work well for rifle hunters as well. Antelope hunting is a blast, and I think one of the best ways to hone your skills and your gear before bow season out west. We cover quite a bit about using a blind vs spot and stalk tactics for chasing antelope. There is some great hunting stories throughout the show as well as some great tips on gear for antelope hunts. For a complete breakdown of the show be sure to check out the show notes below.   So I have been getting tons of messages about people wanting shirts, hats and swag, and I wasn’t sure how I wanted to go about it. Eventually I decided that instead of doing shirts that only promote me or the podcast, why don’t we design an entire line of shirts that promote hunting as a whole, as well as the podcast, and actually give back to hunting by supporting conservation. So thats what we did, and honestly I couldn’t be more pumped with how the whole project turned out. My personal favorite is the Work Hard, Hunt Hard, Stay Humble tee, but by far the most popular so far is the Elk Punisher tee, which seems to be getting a huge response. All of the tees are available for order in both women’s and men’s styles and in multiple color variations. These are not just cotton teeshirts either, I my self am a bit of a tee shirt snob and I wanted to make sure these are something that I will wear personally. We ended up going with a high quality super comfortable blend material. As for giving back, we set the campaign up so for every shirt you order we are giving back a dollar to Backcountry Hunters and Anglers to help keep public lands public. BHA is a great organization that I believe in, and I think is doing big things. I truly think they will be even more crucial in helping the future of all of us who use public lands, especially for hunting and fishing. So check out my new shirt project, I really appreciate all the support form everyone, you guys are awesome and help keep the show going and spreading the message about hunting.  Ep 074: Trail Cam Tips for Elk Hunting with Ryan Carter | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:16:38

This week Ryan Carter of DC Outfitters joins the podcast to cough up all of his secrets to getting killer trail camera pictures of monster bulls. Undoubtably you have seen some of Ryan’s trail cam pics floating around Instagram (@ryan_dcoutfitters) and have had serious bull envy. Ryan has learned a thing or two running 30+ cameras for the last 15 years. This podcast is probably one of the most comprehensive breakdowns of trail camera use for elk that has ever been done, by someone who is more then qualified to teach us the in’s and out’s of running trail cameras for elk and deer.  Ep 073: Randy Ulmer: Perfect Practice Makes Perfect | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:09:05

If you don’t know who Randy Ulmer is you have been living under a rock and not studying your craft nearly enough. Not only is Randy one of the most successful hunters ever, he is an extremely  successful target archer as well. Randy has multiple world and national titles across multiple venues of shooting. His titles Include 2 Asa Mens Professional World Titles, 2 NABH Professional World Titles, 2 IBO World Titles, As well as NFAA National and VEGAS indoor titles. Did I mention he has also killed multiple state record book animals? Coincidence, I think not. Randy has an attention to detail and desire to improve like very few people in this world. One thing you will notice when you start to pick out what makes the greats so great, is the attention to detail that they put into their craft.  In this episode, we dive into some of his routines for shooting practice, tips on perfect practice, as well talk some in-depth gear selection. Be sure to listen all the way through as I think the bit about Randy’s system for selecting his top arrows is both ridiculous and great.

Ep 072: Brian Uthmann: The Greatest Elk Hunter You Have Never Heard Of. | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:14:45

This weeks guest is an elk hunting guru that not many folks know. Brian Uthmann is one of those guys who just spend more time being a great elk hunter then he does telling the world about it and I respect that on a lot of levels. I love talking elk hunting with Brian because you can just see him light up every time we start talking about elk and elk hunting, which is probably true for myself as well. Elk hunting is just something I could talk about for hours. Brian and I have actually chatted for hours about elk hunting so we figured we should record some of it for everyone else to listen in on. We really had no agenda for this podcast we just figured we would hit the record button and wing it, see where it landed. I will say there is a ton of great info in this podcast, but it does tend to jump around a little bit sorry. If you guys like this style of casual hunting conversation mixed in with more interview style guests let me know we can add more of these into the mix. Also if you guys have any questions on things we cover in the podcast be sure to ask am I’m sure Brian would be happy to clarify or elaborate more.  Ep 071: Shane Dorian: Pro Surfer and Bow Hunter | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:01:56

This weeks guest Mr. Shane Dorian (@shanedorian), Pro surfer turned bowhunter. Well, Shane is still a professional surfer but he has caught the bowhunting bug and the love for hunting that we all share. Shane found bowhunting later in life, after he had so much success in surfing, and we talk a lot about both his surfing career, and his bow hunting life. Shane is a very well rounded person with a lot of life experience.

Ep 070: Will Primos: Elk hunting and success | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 57:45

Will Primos really needs no introduction. The founder of Primos Game Calls is working on his 20th elk hunting DVD this year. We have all watched in awe at the bulls Will has chased over the years. Will’s success both in business and in hunting is something I truly admire. His story is very much one of the American dream, and through that success he has been fortunate to spend a lot of time around elk and elk hunting. In this episode, we chat about everything from elk and elk hunting tactics, to industry direction, and great life lessons. One thing that I have always tried to draw out of hunting and from guests like Will, is the life lessons that hunting can teach us. Hunting has the ability to make us strive to be better–whether that be getting in better shape, learning patience, humility, or even compassion–we are constantly striving to be better. I love to chat with hunters who have been around and have some life experience, I have found that they have more to share than just which brand of bow I should use this year. Anyway, I hope you guys pull something from this conversation with Will Primos on elk hunting and success, and at a minimum I hope it gets everyone pumped for elk season right around the corner. Show Notes: * The first sighting of elk. * Learning to make realistic elk sounds * Evolution of elk calls * How elk view calling/danger * Will Primos’ hunting tactics * How Will’s elk hunting tactics have evolved * Knowing when to shoot * Knowing what angle you can shoot * Knowing when not to shoot * Hunting with a partner * Best practicing to hunting with a buddy * Hunting industry direction * Teaching the masses about the great outdoors * How to save the world * Upcoming Montana elk hunt A big thank you to the Primos team and to Will for joining the podcast. Always enjoy getting to chat with those who have gotten outdoors before me. If you enjoyed the podcast, be sure to leave us a review on iTunes.

Ep 069: Zach Bowhay: Hunt DIY-Alaska DIY hunting | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 55:24

This week we are chatting with Zach Bowhay. Zach is not only an absolute killer on the mountain, but he is also a down to earth, hard working family man. Zach was on last year and we chatted about DIY elk hunting. Specifically we chatted what it takes to become the 10% of successful DIY elk hunters like himself. If you haven’t listened to this episode, I highly recommend checking it out, it was a great episode on elk hunting. Today though, we are talking about DIY Alaska hunting. Zach is headed up to Alaska on a DIY moose hunt this year and having done some DIY Alaska trips myself, I thought it would be a fun podcast. In this episode, we chat about what it takes to plan a DIY moose hunt, things to think about in the planning process, and some of the pitfalls we have had on previous Alaska DIY hunts. Zach has a new project that he just came out with called Hunt DIY, where Zach helps break down how to DIY hunt both out West and up North. Be sure to check the teaser video for Hunt DIY as they did a great job of putting it together. I can’t wait to see more of the articles and videos that Zach will be putting out for the Hunt DIY series. Before we get started I wanna give a big iTunes 5 star shoutout to LVM124 who writes: “I’m continually impressed with TRO’s content. Relevant guest, great topics, and foundational interview questions. All with some laughs thrown in. I find myself always coming back for more. Solid effort Cody, keep after it”. – – Allen in Oregon.
