EP 128: Wapiti Wednesday with Jason Phelps | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 43:58

Welcome to The Rich Outdoors Wapiti Wednesday, I wanted to carve out more time to focus on elk tactics and success so we decide we would dedicate an entire day a week to just elk conversations. I want to talk to both the legendary hunters as well as more DIY guys, to find out what is working and what is not for different hunters. At the end of the day, the podcast was designed to be my journey to learn and become a better hunter and elk hunting is by far the passion I want to learn the most about. I thought it only fitting that the first episode of Wapiti Wednesday be Jason Phelps. Jason and I have chatted on the podcast a lot over the years but I always enjoy the conversation and Jason always has a ton of knowledge to offer. Jason Phelps is a long time hunter and very accomplished elk caller. In 2009 Jason launched his own line of elk calls and has continued to innovate and improve the market of calls over the years. This episode is brought to you by Phelps Game Calls. I have literally tested nearly every elk call on the market over the years and I can’t say enough about both the quality and consistency of the Phelps game calls. Phelps’ newest release of the new AMP frame is an absolute game changer. Phelps has taken his amazing attention to detail and created the only elk call I need for the whole month of September and I highly suggest you go get a few and test them out. Phelps is giving our listeners a super limited time offer of free shipping on every order. This deal will not last until September so get it now with code TRO at checkout. That’s Free Shipping on every order at www.phelpsgamecalls.

Ep 127: Born and Raised Outdoors: Elk Hunting, & Spring Bear Hunt on The River. | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:35:20

As a lot of you probably know I just got back from an awesome week of bear hunting. Over all it was an epic adventure with quite the group of people. The original plan was to float the Grande Ronde River with my girlfriend and my sister, mainly for the adventure, and if we see a bear it would be a bonus. It just so happened that Kody Kellom and Trent Fisher of Born and Raised Outdoors were planning the same hunt roughly the same time. On top of that Calvin Halladay, his wife, and their group were floating the river as well about the same time. Of course Mr. James Nash river guide and american badass, had to float down and say hi while we were there. Needless to say we had a great couple of nights on the river camping with good friends. Luckily I threw in the podcast equipment and on the last night we sat down around the camp fire with Trent, Kody, Kelsey, Carly and myself and recorded what I think is a great podcast with the Born and Raised boys. Unfortunately in the three days on the river we did not see a single bear. So I decided that was enough site seeing and it was time to head to the old stomping ground. The first day back into my usual area and we spotted a beautiful blonde, not the biggest bear but the color phase was too great to pass up. We worked in and had to drop about 1500 feet down to the bear. The girls and I made a great stalk and were set up at 225 yards with both cameras rolling and me behind the old sharps. I dialed in the vernier sight and thought I was golden. I missed high and still have no idea what went wrong because afterward I shot my gun and was dead on out to 400. The girls had to take off after that but my hunting buddy Stewart and his little brother were arriving late Friday night. Friday I spotted a bear and decided I would pass and see if that blonde would turn back up. Stuart arrived late Friday night and I showed him the pictures of the bear from the day before. Needless to say not long after daylight we were glassing that bear up and making the 1,500 foot decent to get into position. Everything went according to plan and we had that bear on the ground by 8 a.m. We made quick work of him and were back to the top by 1 p.m. That evening we were still in search of the the blonde that got away when about an hour before dark we spotted a monster bear in the bottom, on the other side of the canyon. Wasting no time we dropped Stewarts little brother off with a quick tutorial on hand signals of higher, lower, left, and right. We boogied around the canyon to a middle figure that would drop us in about 150-200 yards from where the bear was. Upon getting into position and glassing up to see Phillip, the best we could figure was that he was attempting to land a 747 on top of the hill and had forgot to be looking for the bear. We franticly looked for the big bore only to turn up a small light brown sow that was in the same area we thought that bore was. From our new perspective everything looked a lot different and we couldn’t quite see what we could from across the canyon. About then the big bore appeared almost to the top and moving away from us. I made the split decision to forgo getting a bear with the Sharps and told Stewart to hand me his gun because I wasn’t gonna let that big bore get away. All in all it was a long day but an awesome day that I’m sure I won’t soon forget. Since we were tagged out we actually called a friend who’s kid had a tag and had them come out and hunt with us which was a blast. Derrick and Brandon ended up sealing the deal on their own without our help Monday morning. A successful 2017 bear season with everyone tagged out. I should note that after the podcast Kody was able find some bears but ended up missing with Treaver’s fancy rifle. All in all I had a blast with everyone down on the river and hanging out around the camp fire. Hope you guys enjoy the conversation and be sure to stick through to find the giveaway.

 EP126: Ben Master: $125 Pack Horses | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:45:37

Welcome to the show, today is not your average hunting podcast but it is a fascinating topic and a fascinating guy. I was first turned on to Ben Masters work after watching his documentary on Netflix called Unbranded, where Ben and his friends documented their journey from purchasing wild mustangs, to breaking them, and then riding them from Mexico to Canada. Even if you are not a horse person at all I highly encourage you to check out the film, Ben and the crew did an amazing job. The film was done to raise awareness to the issue we have with mustangs in this country. Much like many issues throughout our landscape the bulk of our populations live in concrete jungles sealed off from the issues that are not front of mind for them. In my attempt to understand the issue I thought it would be a great idea to talk with an expert in the matter. So with out further ado I bring you Mr. Ben Masters. Welcome to the show. Today I have a great seminar from an amazing archer and a truly great teacher. We had Mr. Burnworth on the show way back in episode 20, another great episode where Jim shares tons of stories and other hunting tips. This week however I was able to sit in on a seminar that Jim gave on bow setups and shooting form which Jim has truly perfected and turned into a science. In our first episode we touch on Jim’s technique for teaching shooters perfect form, but in this episode he dives much deeper into the system and the process. Hey everyone I have a great show for you today. Through friends of friends and an extremely small world I was introduced to a guy by the name of James Nash a couple months ago, and you could say from the get we got along extremely well. It seems so rare these days to find someone who is more interested in helping others than themselves. James Nash is 100% an Amercian hero, a badass, and most of all a good guy to the core. I feel like we barely scratched the surface in this two hour episode but I had a great time chatting with great people and telling listening to good stories. I have to give a big shoutout to terminal gravity brewing for letting us spend the whole afternoon watching it rain and take over the pub for the afternoon. If you’re interested in picking up a box of beef or fishing with these guys, head over to the 6Ranch website. Quick Announcement before we get started June 3rd is the kick off to the NW Mountain Challenge at Hoodoo ski Resort in Oregon, be forewarned we may be shooting in Snow but either way it is going to be a ton of fun.  EP 120: Randy Johnson: Buck of Justice, Sheep Slams,  and Gear. | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:12:40

Todays episode is a special one, as todays guest a bit of a legend throughout the hunting community, though I am sure he would never tell you that. Randy Johnson is a world renown sheep guide in souther Utah and still gets after it harder then most 18 year olds. I truly hope I am able to spend as much time exploring and adventuring as Randy when I am his age. I remember, years ago reading stories about a buck that randy had found and was hunting named The Buck of Justice. The buck and the story always intrigued me. I am sure many of you have heard the story before but to me it never gets old. There is just something about knowing there is a chance that somewhere out there is a freak buck hiding that no one else knows about that gets me excited to explore into unknown grounds. We also chat about his sheep slam and setting goals in hunting to push yourself farther yet balancing life and hunting for the marathon not the sprint. I always look to those who are where I want to be for advice and truly hope to be as humble and accomplished as Randy. I have a ton of respect for Randy and I can’t thank him enough for jumping on the show. Welcome to the show, today we are chatting about my home state of Oregon, and I will almost guarantee we are going to get some hate mail from this episode. Calvin Halladay joins me to chat about out the beaver state though no beaver hunts were discussed. Cal is a diehard hunter who spends a ton of time in the woods and has a lot of first hand knowledge about the top units in Oregon. In this episode Cal and I discuss the top sheep and goat units, and some things to consider before just throwing your name on any unit in the state. In reading the book it was so east to see the correlation to the struggles of hunting and I was excited to chat with Travis’ transition to becoming a diehard backcountry hunter. Travis also has some great questions for me as complete newbie to hunting that I thought were great questions that I am sure so many other have as well.  EP 117: Hunt Idaho: Tips for Planning an Idaho Backcountry Hunt with Colton Gibbins. | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:18:44

Idaho is the state that started it all for me. It was my first out of state hunt and for years I would just hunt Oregon and Idaho. Idaho is a great opportunity to put an extra tag in your pocket and be able to experience a great backcountry adventure. Idaho is a great place to be able to do your research and find some really great hunts. I have been hitting the go hunt insider this week combing through Idaho information and I think I found a new unit in Idaho that I wanna try this year and is over the counter. Every year I try and have at least one hunt that is somewhere new, sometimes its a bust and sometimes I find areas that I hunt for years. Todays guest is a very accomplish young elk hunter named Colton Gibbins. Colton is a diehard elk hunter and elk hunting guide that has a great outlook on hunting in the backcountry. In this episode we cover some of the basics to getting started with hunting in Idaho and also things to consider for the upcoming draw. Idaho is known more for its opportunity than for its trophies but with no preference points everyone has an equal chance at some truly great limited entry tags. If you plan on hunting in Idaho this year be sure to throw your name in the hat for a chance at a once in a lifetime sheep, goat, or moose tag. In Idaho the fact that you can only apply for one species makes Idaho some of the best draw odds in the west for your trophy species hunts. If you have kids that you want to get into hunting, Idaho is a great state to get your kid started in hunting. With a minimum age of 10 years old, and a only $30 for a non resident youth tag Idaho is a great opportunity for kids to hunt every year and even fill the family freezer. Show Notes: * Interview starts (4:15) * Hunting Idaho as a nonresident (8:15) * Idaho limited draw opportunities (15:15) * Controlled rifle hunts for elk (22:05) * Idaho terrain (23:45) * Wolves in Idaho (26:00) * Getting two tags and draw strategies (33:15) *  Mule deer draw hunts (38:15) * Season dates for Muleys (42:15) * Youth opportunities (51:45) *  Trophy Animals (1:07:30) This episode is brought to you by goHUNT.com/insider.  EP 116 Spring Bear Hunting with Scott Haugen | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:15:31

Today I am joined by a return guest, and one of my personal favorites, Mr. Scott Haugen. Since Bear season is upon us and I have a spring bear tag in my  pocket, it is only right that we spend far too much time talking about spring bear hunting. My apologies to all the diehard elk and mule deer folks who could careless about bears. Bear hunting is top of mind for me and I love chatting with guys like Scott who are far more experienced bear hunters than myself. I learn so much from getting the opportunity to just chat with experienced hunters, and I hope everyone else picks up something along the way as well. With over 50 bears under his belt this episode has some great nuggets of wisdom as well as some great tips on bear meat and meat care for all you bear hunters out there this year. We also cover a lot of specifics like focusing on food sources and things to look for like how to spot sign from 1000 yards away.  EP 114: Hunting Mountain Turkeys out West with Wil Askew | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:24:09

Welcome to the show, Turkey Season is finally here we made it through winter and spring hunting is upon us. I know a lot of guys chase predators and water fowl all winter but to me spring turkey and bear is kind of that turning point where I start get out and doing a lot more and this year is no exception I have a bunch of hunting to do over the next couple months and I’m super excited to chase some thunder chickens this weekend. I have always been a fan of chasing birds around the mountain and love to locate a big gobbler down in a whole and make a move to call him in. This episode is pretty special as Wil Askew was the very first episode I ever did way back two years ago where we talk a lot more about specific tactics than we did in this episode. Still a great conversation about turkey hunting mountain birds vs valley birds with a some great turkey hunting takeaways. This episode might even convince a couple non-turkey hunters to give it a try. There’s plenty of time to chase bears in may. Hope you guys enjoy this episode with an Old friend and good luck to those headed to the woods this weekend.
