Make sure you take notes, and you may need to even listen to this one again. This episode is one of the best podcast we have done on elk calling and I highly recommend it. In this episode I sit down with Tony Trietch, and we talk about a little bit of everything. My personal mule deer tag is right around the corner, and I’m glad that I was able to pick Tony’s brain a bit as I start prepping myself. Tony is a well rounded hunter, and is a very reliable source to go to for information on tactics gear. Tony’s been writing outdoor pieces for Rokslide and many other outdoor blogs, and is a great person to go to if you’re in need of information. Like myself, Tony is mostly a solo hunter, and his tactics and mine seem to be pretty parallel with each other. We get into the subject of backpacking in, when to camp out, and when to stay at the truck, which, may help a few of you guys come to a decision on what your game plan is going to be this upcoming Saturday when season opens.  EP 156: How To Deal With Grizzlies with Kevin Wilson | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:19:12

This week we are going to dive into a bit of bear information. Grizzly bears and grizzly encounters are becoming more and more common, and with current politics surrounding the matter, I don’t see bear human encounters getting any better any time soon. As someone who hunts in grizzly country, I personally wanted to know more about what to do and what not to do in certain situations. When I started hunting around grizzlies about all I knew was don’t try and live with them, that’s a bad idea. Actually, I have had a few encounters with bears and have been pretty fortunate, but with attacks seemingly more and more common I thought it would be a good idea if we were all a little more educated. Kevin Wilson is the president and CEO of Wild Encounters and has a vast amount of experience in both hunting around bears as well as training people about bears and bear behavior. Kevin has some great grizzly encounter stories that I am much happier to hear from him than to actually experience first hand and I can’t thank him enough for jumping on the show to share his knowledge on the matter. Show Notes: * Interview starts (4:15) * Who is Kevin Wilson (6:15) * Black bears vs Grizzly’s (12:30) * Bear encounters (16:45) * Preventing encounters (19:15) * Understanding bear behavior (24:30) * Bluff charges (35:15) * Calling in grizzly country (37:15) * Personalities (42:15) * Relocating bears (42:45) * Growing cougar population (50:00) * Protecting food/electric fences  (52:00) * Once meat has hit the ground (56:15) * Bear spray vs guns (1:03:15) * Run or stand your ground (1:13:15) This episode is brought to you by goHUNT.com and the new Gear Shop.  EP 153: Russ Meyer on Chasing Speed Goats and Shooting Bows | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:08:30

Welcome to Podcast! First off thank you guys so so much, we set out to get 500 reviews a few months ago and we finally did it. The last couple months have been crazy the podcast has been blowing up and I can’t thank you guys enough for spreading the word and sharing the podcast with friends and hunting buddies. Also to the sponsor that help make it possible, it was one thing working late to do one a week but I couldn’t do the 3 a week without help and help from the sponsors, so give them a big thank you by supporting them. goHUNT has been awesome and really believes in the podcast. Which works out well because they have an amazing platform and the new gear shop is awesome because now I don’t have to support REI. No offense to REI people but they tried to shut down snowmobiling years ago and after that, we just weren’t friends anymore. Go check out the new goHUNT gear shop for all of your backcountry hunting equipment. Use our promo code if you like the show and want to keep mule Monday and Wapiti Wednesday around. I really appreciate it guys thank you so much. Now for today’s show, we have been on such a mule deer and elk kick this year that I can hardly squeeze in anything else, I feel like we tripled the amount of podcast we produce and are having an even harder time making everyone happy and getting to every topic. I know a lot of you have antelope tags this year and have even seen quite a few hitting the ground already. Antelope is one of my favorite meats out there and always a fun hunt to go do. I actually am leaving tonight with my good buddy Stewart to go help him on his antelope tag that starts this weekend. Should be a ton of fun, Stewart is super notorious for having an itchy trigger finger so I should probably take his gun from him until we decide on a good buck to take. Either way, I’m super excited to finally be getting out there and start punching tags and filling freezers. I’ll try and keep you posted along the way so if you wanna follow along on the hunt follow my story on my Instagram, @therichoutdoors and we’ll try to share the journey. Today’s guest is no rookie to putting speed goats on the ground or to a bow and arrow for that matter. Russ Meyer is someone I really look up to in the hunting world and have been trying to have him on the show but just never could get our schedules to line up for one reason or another. Russ is a life-long hunter and a great mentor to any hunter. As someone who lives in a state that you actually get the opportunity to hunt antelope every year Russ definitely has his share of experience in hunting goats. We chat mostly about bow hunting tactics and antelope behavior but we do also touch on rifle hunting a little bit. I really enjoyed having Russ on and we will definitely have to have him on again, he has a wealth of knowledge that we can all pull from. Hope you guys have a great weekend and are able to get out there and get some scouting in, or if you have an antelope tag best of luck. Be sure to tag us in your photo’s I wanna see some success photos.  EP 148: Muley Monday -Taking Mule Deer Hunting to the Next Level with Marlon Holden, | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:15:22

This week on Muley Monday I am joined by Gray Light Hunter, Marlon Holden. Marlon is an assassin on the mountain and I always enjoy chatting with him. Marlon was on the podcast way back in episode 016 – 017. If you have not yet, I highly recommend that you go back and give them a listen. Marlon is an extremely interesting guy with an amazing story. Anyone who can harvest over 40 mule deer bucks in their first 12 years of bow hunting must have an amazing work ethic and some skills to back it up. Marlon analysis every detail and comes at hunting mule deer with a very systematic approach. His full understanding of the animal is impressive to say the least. In this episode Marlon shares some great hunts from desert low lands to the high alpine and the tactics used in various situations. Marlon talks about how hunting has changed a little with age and the importance of how a hunt goes vs just killing a buck.  EP 144: FB Live Q&A with Ryan Callaghan | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:24:23

In this episode I stopped by the First Lite headquarters which is one of the coolest companies in the world. Everyone there is awesome and I had an amazing time. The whole crew is great, and you know you are at a great company when there are as many black labs chilling around the office as there are employees. I may be partial I think labs are the the best dog in the world. While we were there and Ryan Callaghan and I decided to answer your questions. It turned out to be a super fun episode and we answered everything from gear questions and tactics questions to what super random questions and even more weird answers. Like how elk estrus ended up in Cal’s mustache and why a camp with Teddy Roosevelt and Bill Murray would be the greatest hunting camp ever. I had a blast with this episode so I hope you guys enjoy it as well. I can’t tell you guys enough how much I appreciate all the DM’s, emails, and reviews about the show you guys are awesome. If you haven’t yet go leave the show a rating it would mean the world to me. Thank you guys so so much. If you are a serious hunter onX is 100% a must have in todays hunting environment. I often ask on the podcast what the best piece of gear under 100 dollars is that makes them a better hunter and this is hand down on my list of gear under $100 dollars. onX maps is not only the most trusted public/private mapping system out there for all 50 States, but it also has all kinds of map layers. From hunting units, to road systems, to burns it has a ton of information. I don’t think I can stress enough how important it is these days to know where you are and where you can and can’t hunt. On top of all of that the onX app allows you save maps and use them when you are out of service. I actually just learned this out on my last bear hunt, but onX maps uses your phones GPS so it shows you exactly where you are even when your phone is on airplane mode. The best part is your onX maps sync between all your devices. So when you scout on the computer at home and mark all of your points of interest, glassing points, bugle spots, they all automatically sync with your phone or tablet as well. I think this is an awesome product and a must have for hunters which is why I am super excited to have OnX as a sponsor of the shop. Use the Rich Outdoors Promo code TRO and save 20% on a membership. It truly is one of the best tools under $100 to make you a better hunter.
