Episode 21 ~ Slice o’ Ginger In Studio to Drop Exclusive Guest Mix | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:55:12

So lovely for "Slice o' Ginga" to drop by Tuff City Radio 90.1 FM studios for an interview, with a special .mp3 in tow... Check out my chat with the Tofitian MC and mixologist, better known around these parts as one Ginger Lee, starting at 48:30 of the program. -Then, don't miss her exclusive guest mix, which kicks off at 57:19. DJ Xoiko gets in the hot seat at 1:38:43 to give us a sense of the #bassline madness you'll be able to expect from his new show in the weeks to come... Until then, you better get ready because we've got everything from "The Turtle" by Nathan Fake, to Manitoba's "Crayon," to Menomena's "Wet and Rusting" -- plus heaps in between. We'll start it all off with a Ducky Rave Tool, then move on to hit up some Patrick Topping, even including Disclosure and A Tribe Called Quest along the way. It was obviously a day to play old favourites on my part, such as "Black and Blue" by Miike Snow, while mixing in some newer numbers like the Friction remix of Gorillaz' "Dare" and Calyx and TeeBee's "Nothing Left" And to bookend the whole experience, I decided to premiere a great slow rap jam from a fellow treeplanter's Victoria squad Cognac Crew. Cheers for the heads up Shihottie. Plus, I melded the podcast version into form using, at one point, six different vocal layers. So soak up the chorus, reverb and overdrive. (Originally broadcast March 29, 2016 on 90.1 FM Tuff City Radio in Tofino, B.C., Canada)

Episode 20 ~ Theatrical frequency threat, the Kays, Krista acoustic, Vinyl with Iv | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:59:38

It's a mixed bag this week as we mash up interviews about the mobile threat to theatrical frequencies with multiple emerging musicians (live and pre-produced for a bit of variety). -The CRTC has aligned itself with cell phone juggernauts in the sense the telecommunications regulator is squeezing out the much smaller but no less culturally relevant theatre performers. Listen to an interview with one of the affected parties and find out why it matters. -We'll hear about plans for beach cleanup thanks to the Surfrider Foundation. -Check out my interview with Noelle Beaulieu from the Kays, a Courtenay, B.C. band with a knack for a unique brand of indie rock — or as they call it: "Funky Psychedelic Groove." -Plus music from Calyx and TeeBee, AC/DC, Disparition, José González and K-OS. -We’ll have an acoustic rendition of an ocean-focused trip-hop classic by Morcheeba from local singer-songwriter Krista Martens. -Then we've got a "Vinyl with Iv" set featuring actual vinyl records. Expect tracks from Run DMC, Sublime, J.J. Cale and Jimi Hendricks.

We’ll take a look at what goes in to turning words into a Hollywood blockbuster and ask her about a memorable #horizon moment. We have a Vancouver Island musician call in live to the program from Mexican surf town Sayulita. He’ll give us the skinny on the environment Apparat was surrounded by when they created one of their best tracks. I’ll give you breaking news about public beach access improvements, Tofino’s plan to crack down on Air BnB hosts operating illegally, and give you a sense of the community’s efforts to push British Columbia in a more “green” direction — at least as far as its investments are concerned.  Episode 10 ~ Pair of Stellar DJ Sets | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:00:00

While I'm away from my 90.1 FM Tuff City Radio show I prepared a two-hour presentation of couple of my favourite DJ mixes from recent years. The first is a Kollektiv Turmstrasse mix I latched onto while tree planting in the interior of British Columbia. I remember trying to download it in one of the only places with a WiFi signal in that part of the Cariboo region. I had found the mix labelled as being from UNCIVIL podcast #035. So I reached out to the poster and received a link to the mix on my birthday. "Good morning and here you go........." the message read. What a great gift! The second set is from Vancouver Island native Neon Steve. The first time I heard of this dude was among ghettofunk enthusiasts in Calgary, Alberta at the height of the frack boom, prior to the oil price collapse due to global oversupply. But it was surprisingly awesome party in Courtenay that showed me what kind of energy the dude can bring to the table when the chips fall the right way. It is this mix that displayed the man's diversity.
