I’ve always wanted to participate in this event, and this week I dive in to give listeners a feel for what the experience is like. I even made a small profit, kinda. -I was lucky enough to be introduced to a 13-year-old with a full-on excitement for new electronic music.  Episode 33 ~ PudFluff raps live, Lotus table read, Gulf Islands Radio | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:48:20

Starting off with a little bit of golden sparkle and then transitioning into hippity hop atmospherics. I’m talking about a little PudFluff live in studio, bringing his unique cadence to Tuff City Radio. I remember the first time I met this dude… he rolled up from his float house in a boat and appeared with a board under his arm. Turns out he’s a theatre buff, and I didn’t even know that. Also, we drop a legit table read for a Shakespeare-influenced play called Lotus — it’s a full community affair that took place at Tofino’s Botanical Gardens. I even got to say a few lines as a sage Japanese monk. And I wrote ambient music to go with a segment about Gulf Islands Radio trying to get back on the FM dial. Oh yea, and shout out to the Bungy Zone…

>Justin Martin's "Dive In" kicks off Episode 25 for us, as we dive in ourselves to some pretty solid material... We hang out with kayaker Simon Behman as he launches himself from Tofino's shores to raise awareness about salmon conservation while raising $$$ for local non-governmental organization Friends of Clayoquot Sound. It's a 2,000 km challenge he's facing head on, and local outfitter Tofino Sea Kayaking Company had a few positive comments about Simon's clear determination. Update: Simon has so far made incredible progress despite difficulties presented by Pacific Ocean conditions. Former Frequency Horizon guest Luc Bibeau returns to the program, this time with a slew of homies in tow: -Calgarian Chris Adams is a news head who is on his way to do a masters of journalism at Ryerson University in Toronto. -Despite initial hesitation to get behind the mic, Andrew Dennison, in town from Kamloops, throws down a precise sociological interpretation of Tuff City's particular brand of West Coast culture. -And Curtis Wolff, another soul from Calgary, helps steer the conversation in lighthearted directions, and talks about banging out sports reports. The crew gathered in Tuff City Radio studios to discuss the state of journalism today, the beautiful people of Tofino, and how the Frequency Horizon audio strains fit perfectly with Victoria's Secret pageantry when you're trying to procrastinate from pre-exam review. -Plus music from The Flashbulb, Whitehorse, Four Tet (with a description of a synchronistic happening involving the track), Steve Angello, Boards of Canada, Oliver, Random Rab and Rene LaVice.

Episode 24 ~ Alexx Pacifici films as Antonio De Luca heals | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:59:56

We get Montreal photographer/filmmaker Alexx Pacifici to describe what it was like to capture the unreal sunset in Tofino and about his plans to submit to an independent film festival. Guess we'll have to play some Arcade Fire and Stars to make him feel at home... Pacifici -- who sports the perfect West Coast name -- got right into it and even ended up filming part of my conversation with Tofino local Antonio De Luca, who recently got into a pretty gruesome skateboarding injury. We'll talk sushi, taking live on a positive tip and about getting back into the water after weeks away... "I'm on my way to recovery." All that plus music from Ryuichi Sakamoto, Flying Lotus, Woodini, Lindstrøm and much more!

Episode 23 ~ Whistler: Hitchhike up, BADBADNOTGOOD, A Tribe Called Red | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:00:00

Take a tripped out audio excursion up the mountain to the 2016 World Ski and Snowboard Festival in Whistler, B.C. with us. We start out, as you must, by grabbing a last surf at Long Beach to prep for an attempt at surfing and snowboarding, in what I consider sister cities of Tofino and Whistler, within 24 hours. We'll take you on a hitchhike adventure involving a crying baby, a bachelor party and roller derby girls heading to the same festival, making last minute jersey adjustments on the ferry, iron in hand. I ask a couple Whistler locals about the significance of the "Après," as the results of the big ski competition are announced in the background. Plus, we'll hear the coach of the First Nations Snowboarding Team describe the significance of A Tribe Called Red's music — and he'll tell us about a particularly meaningful moment during their big opening performance. Then we collect the four members of Juno-nominated BADBADNOTGOOD to recap their performance, find out about their musical vocabulary and ask what it's been like to work with Ghostface Killah, Kaytranada and Mos Def. Of course you'll be treated to a whack of dope tunes from the likes of A Tribe Called Red, Flying Lotus, Earl Sweatshirt, Pendulum, Railtown Prophets and Little Simz. [Originally aired on 90.1 FM Tuff City Radio April 12, 2016]

They'll explain how they scored a sponsorship from The North Face (11:10). -We take a look at how fixing the Tofino's "amenity policy" could ultimately help house the homeless or build a sports facility. (41:00) -And we'll preview the World Ski and Snowboard festival in Whistler -Plus, we have an interview (30:30) with Moremi Adeyinka, who scooped up $500 in the Tuff City Idol competition interview, only bested by her own mother, Phyliss Merasty. (Includes performance snippet).
