Last year local First Nations leaders told Trudeau not to return to this part of beautiful Vancouver Island until Canada lets them have their fishing rights won in court way back in 2009. Well as he begins a vacation by the beach (alongside international visitors from places like Germany, France, the UK and Switzerland, who have been flooding this community as per usual), he participated in the first-ever nation-to-nation meeting between the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council and a sitting Canadian head of state. 25:08 – We play you the full audio of the public portion of the meeting. We put Councillor Greg’s feet to the fire about the goings on of our local surf resort village, including what to do about containing the pressures arising from the growth in AirBnB-style vacation rentals. Plus, he reads us a poem he wrote that was inspired by the all-night wolf escape story featured in last week’s episode. He told me about a harrowing ordeal where he spent a night in the forest getting chased by a bunch of wolves. The story really resonated with me, since I got lost in the bush the same day he did, and so the way he was describing things rang true to my own experience. 9:57 – My fam drops in to tell about how I almost didn’t make to tonight’s show. Getting lost in the forest is a real thing I found out. Sorry if I sound a little exhausted. 40:13 – With a cell phone streaming Facetime in one hand, and a cordless landline in the other I mediate an inter-band discussion of infamy beamed in from just beyond the eastern shores of our giant island. Cold Open: While I drive off the ferry back to Vancouver Island after my road trip to the States, I chat with Dena, as she frantically attempts to get Tuff City Radio back on the air… 7:42 – Island Life problems: The ferry was busy and BC Ferries made me wait a sailing, so it took me a couple extra hours to make it back to Tuff City. It was dark when I hit the last leg of the journey, and I found a pair of nighttime hikers (Pierre and Maude) in basically the “middle of nowhere” by the Rainforest Trail. Here’s my auditory trip behind the scenes of Enchanted Forest Gathering 2017 @enchantedforestgathering next to Laytonville, in California’s Mendocino County. I send in a dispatch while at a tire shop in Oregon, delivering furniture to a winery in California, considering the wine festival I attended just days earlier in Tofino. 00:45 – Soft Open: My old trippy green backpack just appeared on an empty beach north of Vancouver. On my way south I see if I can recover it. 15:50 – Grazing in the Gardens is one of the coolest events that happens all year on Vancouver Island. Wineries from all over British Columbia descend on our lovely rainforest and for the price of a single ticket you can sample all of them. I certainly tried during the 2017 edition. “It hasn’t been an easy week” -> 57:40 – That’s saying the least. On the one hand we had a tragedy at sea. On the other, one of our early Frequency Horizon supporters, Bill Oz passed away. It’s really too bad cancer won the war with the dude the week I recorded this episode. He was the perfect Canadian. You know, drank cheep beer, watched hockey and worked at the hardware store.
