Harley and Brett hit the west coast for a spooky visit to the Haunted Heceta Lighthouse and a the Gem of the Oregon Coast. Heceta Head Lighthouse is miles north of Florence, and 13 miles south of Yachats. Perched 205 feet above the Pacific Ocean, this lighthouse to look at, but with the conversion to a bed and breakfast you can do more than look. Book a night or an event to experience the magnificent view of the Pacific Ocean and the beach below. With over a 125 years of history, this cozy vacation spot might have more than stunning views. Visitors to this gem have had more than a few paranormal visitations. There have been reports of a wispy gray figure floating down the hallway, sounds of sweeping and furniture being moved at night coming from the empty attic, and tales of a resident ghost by the name of Rue, that will show you the best place to put your shoes. www.hecetalighthouse.com If you are in the area, you should check out some of these other activities as well. On Episode 143, Brett and Harley take you on a road trip down RT 66 to visit some haunted hotels. We start the trip at The Hollywood Roosevelt in Los Angeles, California. Bbuilt in 1926, in what is known as the Golden Era of Los Angeles architecture, and was named after Teddy Roosevelt. It cost $2.5 million to build in 1927. The Hollywood Roosevelt is home to two celebrity ghosts. Montgomery Clift, best known for the movie, “From Here to Eternity.” His ghost now allegedly haunts room #928 of the 9th floor of the hotel, playing a trumpet, and pacing the hallways while reciting his old lines. The second afterlife resident is none other than Marilyn Monroe. Norma Jean has supposedly been seen several times in a full-length mirror, which was originally located in her poolside Suite 1200, where Marilyn often stayed. Our next stop is the Hotel Monte Vista in Flagstaff, Arizona. This hotel was built in 1927 and is a centerpiece of the historic downtown district. Many famous people have spent the night at the Hotel Monte Vista, including: John Wayne, Spencer Tracy, Humphrey Bogart, Clark Gable, Anthony Hopkins, Esther Williams, and Barbara Stanwyck. It was also a filming location for the 1942 American romantic drama Casablanca. Patrons and staff report being greeted with an anonymous “good morning” whispered in their ears. There have also been reports bar-stools and drinks that seem to move all on there own. The Rocking Chair aka room 305 was featured on “Unsolved Mysteries”. Room 305 is reportedly the most paranormally active in all of the Monte Vista. Guests have reported being awakened in the middle of the night unable to return to sleep with a constant feeling of unease and the sense that are being watched. The third and final stop on this trip is The Mine Shaft Tavern in Madrid, New Mexico. Madrid was a “company town”. The original tavern was established in 1895 ,but in 1944 burnt to the ground. The current Tavern was established in 1947 and is one the oldest continually operated taverns in Santa Fe County. You can try their award winning Mad Chile Burger with a half pound of black angus chuck, but some of the sides are a little spooky. People report glasses falling off of the bar, doors opening and swinging back and forth on their own, furniture being moved, and orbs in photos. Episode 142 of the Travel Oddities Podcast is here and we are taking a Thanksgiving road trip of sorts. What’s our problem with Thanksgiving? We want to make Thanksgiving GREAT again. 43 million Americans are expected to travel for Thanksgiving, but we fear there are not enough adventures involved. There’s no evidence that turkey was served on the “first” Thanksgiving. With that being said, Harley and Brett, want more diversity in our Thanksgiving festivities. Thanksgiving pork chops? Don’t over commit. We recommend attending fewer dinners and making the most of them. Pass Down a family recipe or make a new one together. This is a perfect time to share. Say no to Black Friday! Thanksgiving is a time for family. Don’t let corporate America push you around. Those “deals” are not more important than friends and family Volunteer. Go outside and play games with the kids instead of watching the game on TV. Go to a local parade and interact with REAL people. Leave the phone in the car. On Episode 141, Brett and Harley have Aaron Babel lead the way to Rockford, IL, for a stroll down Bloods Point Rd. Visitors to the Rockford area will find a ton activities to keep them busy; from museums, theaters, arts, an outstanding park system, and Illinois’ largest water park. The Travel Oddities Podcast has done its fair share of haunted highways, bridges, and even haunted road trips, but this may be the most haunted roadway so far. Named after Patriarch Arthur Blood, Bloods Point rd. runs between Fairdale and Wheeler roads, 20 minutes SE of Rockford and for years has been considered to be not only the states most haunted stretch of road but one the most haunted locations in the world. Sightings include: The trees lining the road appear to turn into humans as though to stand guard. A witch named Beaula walking the bridge at night appearing to look for someone or something. A black cat has often been seen darting in front of passing vehicles causing them to swerve into the ditch. Phantom cars, big rigs, old buses, old pickups and a phantom cop car can be seen all hours of the night. Mysterious lights have been seen in the trees. Reports of people being chased by HELL HOUNDS. Blood Point Cemetery has been attracting ghost hunters and thrill seekers for years but BEWARE, trespassing is strictly prohibited and violators will be prosecuted. We also stop in to the Midway Village Museum, located at 6799 Guilford Road, Rockford IL to check out theRockford Peaches. You might recognize from them from the movie, A League of Their Own, starring Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Madonna and Rosie O’Donnell. THE national pastime almost died because there were no men fit to play the game during WWII. In an effort to keep people interested in the game, the owner of the Chicago Cubs(Phillip Wrigley started a women’s baseball league. The All American Girls professional Baseball League grew to 10 teams and lasted for over a decade. The Rockford Peaches were one of the first teams in the league and also one of the most winning teams as well. They won 4 championships in that time. They made Rockford their home for that whole time, and now the Midway Village Museum honors their story with The exhibit, The Girls of Summer. If you are in the area you should check it out. If your are done with running from the Hell Hounds, maybe you should take a break at Lino’s. This 40 year old establishment serves old world Italian cuisine. They have been recognized for their customer service, atmosphere, and most importantly their food. On Episode 139, Brett and Harley are taking you on a roadtrip for Halloween. We are starting at The Palmer House Hotel. If you like ghost children, they have you covered. With multiple haunted rooms available, you shouldn’t have too much problem finding a ghostly friend. Check with the hotel for availability. 500 Sinclair Lewis Avenue, Sauk Centre MN After the Palmer, we head over to the Haunted First Avenue Night Club, 701 First Avenue North, Minneapolis, Minnesota. The First Avenue is an independent, live music, night club which features a variety of live bands playing original music. Some of the biggest artists in the world have played here. You know Prince had to be on the list. The building was built in 1937, presented as a brand new, stream-lined, art deco style Grey Hound Bus Depot. Sometime in the history of the building, a woman hung herself in one of the stalls in the women’s bathroom. The entity of a blonde woman, wearing a green jacket often appears to staff and patrons of this musical venue club. Another entity will make a balloon appear from nowhere which then floats up and down the staircase on its own. The employees call this one Slippy. People have reported seeing dancing apparitions with no legs. When we finish dancing with the legless ghosts, we head to The Wardens House. The Wardens House was built in 1853 as the residence of the territorial prisons wardens quarters. Over the years many psychics have investigated the house and reported seeing a woman that appeared to be searching for her baby with stomach pains. There are also a lot reports from visitors that they’ve heard noises such as shoveling coal in the basement. Our restaurant is number four on the list, which is interesting since we are going to Forepaugh’s Restaurant. This is a gorgeous state-of-the-art venue in a historic, Victorian mansion. Their “Downstairs” menu is more casual…beers and Reuben sandwich kind of menu. The fine dining menu is a more refined culinary experience. Aside from the amazing views and food, they also fully embrace the odd of their location. 1. They have a Piano Bar in which they play Halloween themed music around this time of year. 2. This Halloween, they have none of than Natalie Fowler giving psychic readings. The last leg of the trip is to Fountain Lake in Delano, MN. Fountain Lake is a 282-acre lake located in south-east Wright County. At Fountain Lake, witnesses say, the ghost of a Native American woman who drowned here can be heard screaming late at night. According to the Fountain Lake Association: Fountain Lake IS NOT haunted. We are going to let you be the judge. On Episode 138, join Brett and Harley as they explore 5 of the scariest haunts in the country. Terror Behind the Walls at Eastern State Penitentiary is located inside castle-like Eastern State Penitentiary. This is not only one of the premiere haunted attractions in the country, but also one of the largest. You will experience Hollywood-quality special effects and lighting, and be scared to death by over 200 great performers in creepy costumes. Arx Mortis is the largest haunted attraction in Alabama. With over 50,000 square feet of terrifying thrills, you will be shaking in your boots. This haunt has multiple steps through various settings. If you make it out of the haunted woods, your adventure has just begun. If you haven’t had your fill by the time you reach the clowns, there is also laser tag with Zombies, multiple escape rooms and a haunted house gift shop. Thrillvania, located east of Dallas Texas, has been featured on The Travel Channel’s “Americas Scariest Haunted Attractions” and Frighthouse on the DIY Network. There are three haunts on 50 acres. A lot of detail goes into the interior and decorations and it has a choose your own adventure kind of feel. Asylum 49 in Tooele, Utah, may be one of the most EXTREME haunts in the country. The rules to enter are extensive, but just be warned that they will be working very hard to scare the bejeezus out of you. They use special effects and the actors can and will GRAB you, so buyer beware. The Haunted Hotel is located downtown in San Diego. It has been ranked the number 1 Scariest Haunt in America. It is the longest running haunt in San Diego. You can try the ALL NEW Hellevator, stroll down the dark, deadly Zombie infested alley and drudge through the hillbilly swamp or make your way through the Morgue Autopsy Lab. If that isn’t scary enough, they have a lights out event on Wednesdays and you have to make your way through the scares with only a glow stick. Get in the car and check one of these out. Episode 137, The Lone Fir Cemetery in Portland, OR. Brett and Harley are checking out this WEIRD city and all of the oddities we can find. Portland is modern and friendly, but it is also ODD and that is why we like it. Whether you are on a full-blown investi-cation or you are just para-curious, Portland has tons to keep you busy. If you are not into the strange, you can camp, hike, fish, ski, hit the beach or just go nutty trying every craft beer around. Lone Fir Cemetery was created in 1854, and with over 25,000 permanent residents, there is quite a lot of history and built up ectoplasm. National Geographic listed it as one of the top cemeteries to visit in the whole world. From scary history to scary ghost stories, you may want to go in the day just to be safe. If you aren’t into ghosts, maybe magic is up your alley. Mystic District is one city block in Portland with three magical shops to keep you busy. From crystals to candles and tarot to tea leaves, this place sounds like a great place to fill up your cauldrons or to even buy a cauldron if you are just starting. Diagon Alley is just an alley, this place is a whole city block! When you are ready to refuel, you should check out the oldest restaurant in Portland. Huber’s was established in 1879. Their Spanish coffee presentation is world renowned, they have ridiculously good food and the ambiance is unique. Don’t listen to Benji S., part time yelper.
