GFE Podcast #6: What are simple and complex carbohydrates: The basics. | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 20:12

I had a question come in recently asking about what simple and complex carbohydrates are and if sugars are the same thing or different? So today we've got a 'What is' session that goes over the very basics of carbohydrates. It certainly doesn't cover every angle but gives you the very basics on choosing the best forms of carbohydrates and should help to overcome the confusion. Download the podcast here   Here are 2 great articles you might like to read Guide to healthy carbohydrates Do carbohydrates make you fat? Below you'll find some food lists with some examples of simple and complex carbohydrates. Simple carbohydrates Complex carbohydrates sugar white sugar white flour white bread white pasta soft drinks & sodas energy drinks fruit juices many cereals many crackers many sauces and condiments processed food ice creams cakes & cookies pies fruit honey whole grains whole grain breads whole grain crackers like brown rice cakes gluten free wholegrain pastas brown rice quinoa buckwheat vegetables – loads fo them to choose from beans and legumes such as: chickpeas lentils adzuki beans borlotti beans navy beans wild rice oats sweet potato The easiest way to think about it is to avoid or minimise simple carbohydrates and eat more complex carbohydrates, especially vegetables. 4 simple steps to choosing the healthiest carbohydrates that will help keep you in the best state of health. 1. Vegetables are your number one main priority and source of carb. Always load up your plate with vegetables such as broccoli, tomato, onion, spinach, carrot, cucumber, lettuce, and so forth. There is such a wide variety of vegetables to choose from that you can virtually never get bored and if you don’t like vegetables then you need to start trying. 2. Fruits can be eaten in moderation but are best kept to a maximum of 2 pieces a day. 3. Gluten free whole grains such as brown rice, quinoa, millet, buckwheat and so forth can be included in small portions. These are not best as the staple at every single meal. 4. As a rule do not displace vegetables for whole grains, you must get those veggies for their super nutritional power. It’s all about getting adequate nutrients into your body and vegetables contain plenty of those, and they don’t effect your blood sugar as much, so like I said, if you’re not eating enough of them now, you need to start trying.  GFE Podcast #5: How To Read Food Labels | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 24:09

Have you ever wondered how to read food labels? I wouldn't be surprised if you said yes because food labels are quite confusing. Why are there all these columns on food labels? What do they mean? What are you actually looking for? It can all be quite confusing and to tell you the truth, I'm sure food manufacturers do this to us on purpose to confuse us about the foods we buy. And then we have programs like weight watchers or maybe even our doctor tell us to look for things low in fat so all we loook at on a label is low fat content. But is this the best thing to look for? No. Our method of measurement is all wrong when it comes to food. It's not just about the macronutrient composition. The most important thing about food, no matter whether it comes in a packet or not, is quality. If a food product has 49 ingredients but still has a low fat content and looks like it's low in calories, is it really going to be good for you? No. This podcast helps you to understand food labels, well, at least the beginning of getting to know them. Grab a couple of food items so you can follow along :) Download the podcast here  Additives and Preservatives Here are some links to places that teach you about all the numbers in food. Get to know these so you can inform yourself. Most countries food additives are very similar numbers.  GFE Podcast #4: Health Endorsements on Food Labels. Are they killing us? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 15:27

Health endorsements on food labels are meant to be there to help us but are they really killing us instead? Here in Australia there has been a recent issue surrounding health endorsements on food labels and more specifically the Heart Foundations tick of approval. Whether you're in Australia, the US or somewhere else in the world, this issue applies to you because the same thing occurs and there are lessons to be learned here. So in this podcast I share my take on health endorsements and cover how the Heart Foundation approves their tick, how the current way we approach food is all wrong, and share some other interesting insights around this topic too. Download the podcast here Subscribe to the podcast on itunes here I also promised to share links to more information about this topic so here they are. The recent segment about this issue on A Current Affair. Click here. Join the campaign and sign the petition to have the tick removed from some food items. Click here. The Heart Foundations statement about the show on A Current Affair. Click here. Jessie Reimer's response to the statement. Click here. Further info about the Heart Foundation tick. Click here. Here's an interesting snippet from the Heart Foundation website. Notice that they say the products they approve are not suitable for people with heart disease or nay other disease! Yep, they say that, yet they contradct themselves with their purpose. Are they serving their purpose? No, I don't think so! I'd love to hear your thoughts too, so if you've got something to say please share your comments below :) Jedha P.S. Share this podcast with your friends! This is an important issue so be and we want as many people as possible to learn about what the food industry and health endoresements on food labels are really doing to our health.

 Podcast #2: Adrenal Fatigue Treatment | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 28:01

In the last episode of the Good Food Eating Podcast we talked about a client of mine Lisa and her case study around adrenal fatigue. In todays episode I go over adrenal fatigue treatment and what we did to help her get her life back on track and there's lots of tips and tricks you can apply as well. When she first came to see me she had a whole range of symptoms including: chronic fatigue insomina depression digestive problems memory and cognition issues sensitivity to cold food cravings and yet a lack of appetite and a few other things too We used 3 key treatment strategies. 1. Diet 2. Lifestyle changes 3. Simple supplementation I gave Lisa a plan to follow but it was still up to her to follow it. Thankfully she did, wanting to get better and within a few months she went from a ghost like person who was dragging herself around to a person with colour in her skin, light back in her eyes, and energy. Perhaps not energy to burn...yet. But boy what a difference. I really wish I had of taken pictures because it really was an astounding change. I hope you enjoy the episode and find it useful. It's one of my favourite topics to talk about. Download the podcast here You can find heaps more information in my book & program for adrenal fatigue. The Adrenal Fatigue Handbook. And I also work privately with clients from all over the world on things like adrenal fatigue and other health conditions. Find out more info about my services here. Lab Testing  That You Can Do At Home I also talked about lab testing on this podcast so here's some info about it and a place you can order a home test. One of the most accurate ways to test cortisol levels is with a saliva test that is taken over different time periods throughout the day. Cortisol is what we want to be measuring because generally the effects of adrenal fatigue and dysfunction occur due to cortisol levels that are all out of whack. Following on from this, the rest of our hormones go awry in a chain of follow up events. When you measure your salivary hormones it shows the tissue concentration of the hormones in your body. The great thing about measuring saliva in this way is that it shows the active component of the hormone in your body, whereas a blood test would show total hormone levels but not necessarily the active component. Canary Club has a home test you can purchase for $119 that gives you full instructions on when to take your saliva over a 24 hour period. You can check out all the details of the test over here. See you for next weeks podcast. Have a great week Jedha P.S. Subscribe to my weekly newsletter to be informed of new podcasts. It will be available in itunes soon.

Podcast #1: Adrenal Fatigue Case Study Plus a BIG Welcome to the Show | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 24:20

Welcome to the very first episode of the Good Food Eating Podcast, my brand spanking new podcast, which is so very exciting! I have been thinking about getting this podcast out for quite a few months now and like lots of things, finding the time to make it happen often takes longer than you think. So it's really exciting to finally have it done and get the ball rolling. I want to thank Sound Factory Studio for doing the great music for the show, I hope you enjoy that because Paul did a great job. Thanks :) What's The Good Food Eating Podcast All About? The mission for this podcast is to share empowering information that can help you change your life and feel fabulous! I look forward to sharing loads of different stuff related to nutrition and diet, healthy eating, healthy habits, and lifestyle and disease prevention. And I'll also be sharing loads of info about health conditions and what we might do with our diet and lifestyle to support better health and function. Although I do love to talk, this show is not always going to be me doing the talking. I look forward to bringing on my clients, friends, and colleagues who can share their wisdom and inspiration too. There are sooo many topics I'd like to cover and we will get to them all eventually but this week we are going to briefly dig into a client case study that covers the topic of adrenal fatigue. It may seem like a strange topic to get started on but it is an area of passion and I've been working with a client recently so thought it was a good place to start. This will be a weekly show of around 30 minutes duration so you can listen to it while making dinner or driving to work. If the topics are quite in depth  I'll make a series of podcasts over a few weeks. This Podcast is For YOU Most importantly the Good Food Eating Pocast is ALL about YOU. So what would you like to hear about? What would you like to learn? Do you have a question you'd like answered? I want to hear from you :) You can submit a question, topic or suggest a guest anytime you like. Submit your questions and topics here Episode Number 1 Aside from saying welcome, in this podcast I'll be sharing an adrenal fatigue case study from a client I've been working with, Lisa (name changed for privacy purposes). We'll actually be covering the topic of adrenal fatigue next week as well, when we talk about treatment. It's great to use a case study in order to put things into context so I hope you enjoy the story and process we went through. In this episode you will learn: What is adrenal fatigue? Lisa's story and discovering root cause What symptoms she presented with and various symptoms of adrenal fatigue Symptomatic treatment vs treating the person as a whole The impact cortisol can have on your whole body and person The 3 steps to moving forward Next week we'll cover these 3 steps and go into detail on what we did to help her situation. I also didn't get to cover everything in this episode. This is a very new medium so I did miss a few important factors. However I covered everything related to the case study I was talking about and mostly I was trying to communicate how stress can really impact our entire body. If you're struggling with adrenal fatigue you might like to check out the book and program I wrote to help people overcome it. The Adrenal Fatigue Handbook: Meal Plans & Food Guide. Check that out here if you want to. For now I hope  you enjoy the very first podcast and I look forward to hearing from you. Download or listen to the podcast here Adrenal Fatigue Adrenal fatigue can be like a silent passenger that slowly creeps up on you and then one day you realise you're entirely exhausted, run down, worn out and feeling like a burnt out prune :) You may have been to doctors, you might have a variety of symptoms, and yet still can't find a solution to the problem. And you may even be finding it difficult to function in the world at all!
