UN-Podcast 009: UNconditional (Ito & Kaila’s Moms!) - Finding Our Hunger

Finding Our Hunger show

Summary: A mother’s love for her child is like nothing else in the world. It knows no law, no pity, it dares all things and crushes down remorselessly all that stands in its path. – A. Christie
You were my home, Mother. I had no home but you – Janet Fitch
Mother. Mom. Mama. Mommy.
It doesn’t matter how you say it, the word “mother” is charged. We each have a unique relationship with the woman who gave birth to us, who gave us life, whose body created our bodies–the very bodies we are still learning how to love. And yet the love the have for our mother’s is fully developed, a love that transcends the uncertainty of the body we inhabit. As we grow–into our own bodies, into our own selves–our relationships with our mothers evolve. And sometimes it’s easy to forget that our mothers are on their own journeys, still learning how to inhabit their own bodies and live with the bodies of the children they created.
This past weekend–on Mother’s Day–Ito and I had the opportunity to interview each of our mothers–each woman who has a unique story about beauty and the body, nutrition and health. From Nigeria to Ardsley, New York, from body acceptance to eating disorders, our moms have some incredible stories to share with you.
Go ahead and take a listen–Ito’s mom’s interview begins at 4:27 and my mom’s begins at 29:35 if you want to skip around.
Have you ever talked to your mom about body image, beauty, or health?
