We just shot an email, if you guys got it, thank you so much for responding, but we got a ton of response on the subject of drop-shipping. This is, obviously I've heard of it before. I've been talking with Dean about it a lot, but I wanted to get the nitty gritty from the guy who is kind of heading this up, and it is my one and only homeboy, Dean Soto. What's up, man? The big question I've been getting is the legal side of it. Is it legal? We are going to talk through Dean, talk with Dean through this subject and I just want the biggest break because I have a ton of questions too. Dean first off, tell me how the heck did you get started with drop-shipping? It's so random. Dean: Well first off I apologize for the room. This is not my studio. This is my son's room. We have stars and pictures and all our stuff. I got basically kicked out of my studio because it also happens to be where my littlest baby sleeps so I don't get to have the cool mic like you do today at least. Yeah, it's interesting. I mean for those who know me for a while I like doing the online stuff like not the physical product stuff. I do all the online marketing. Podcasting I used to do, now that Josh is basically way better at that than me. I give it to him and he's like taking it to the next level. Webinars all those different things. I just don't like touching physical product not that it's bad, it's just doesn't coincide with my nature. It was interesting. Drop-shipping never appealed to me. It's been around forever, honestly. Everyone knows what drop-shipping is for the most part. There's so many different ways to do it, I never actually went into it saying, “Hey, I want to drop-ship some stuff.

Most people are missing one of the biggest opportunities for profits out there, Social media. Im sure you have heard about facebook ads, although I do think this is a great tool this is not what we are talking about today. Instagram, Facebook and Twitter are massive market places waiting to be tapped. Posting multiple times a day can help build community, build brand identity and ultimately drive massive traffic to your listings. We all know big traffic means big money. The biggest problem is posting takes allot of time…..I mean allot. There is an answer to this problem and our guest Laura Roeder has the key. Some of you may have heard my story about my dad and I starting a vintage bicycle restoration business, for those of you that haven’t I will give you the short version. My dad as a young man worked in a Schwinn bicycle shop in Southern California. He has always had a love for bikes but moved on to bigger things. A few years back he reignited this passion when he picked up a few of these 1970s Schwinns for a business idea I had been working on. Soon enough we had more bikes than we knew what to do with. We decided that we would test the market on eBay. We started with a sale a month. I knew this wasn't going to work for us so I gave some different social media platforms a try. Within 24 hours we had increased our views by 100% and within a week we had sold 3 bicycles. We continued with this model and ended up selling off all of our bikes. When I would slack on posting about them our sales would fall. When I was great about it sale would be great. I couldn’t keep up with all the different pieces of the business and i was feeling the pressure of needing to keep up on postings. But first let me tell you a little bit about her. She holds an MBA in Executive Management & Leadership. Her passion is working with entrepreneurs to help them gain the knowledge and confidence to build a successful business. Prior to being an entrepreneur herself she was the Vice President of a health company with 5000 employees in Canada. So basically she is a champion. When Nicki got in touch with us i was super stoked. She has done more hiring than I will most likely do in my lifetime. She agreed to come on and talk through the process she uses for hiring on employees. Yes Hiring the first employee is often a tough decision. In this podcast Nicki shares why it is so important to bite the bullet and get the process going. She talked about us as entrepreneurs being able to work ‘on’ the business rather than ‘in’ the business. Finding your first employee can be challenging but it can also be challenging working for an ecommerce entrepreneur. You need to have grace in this season and be willing to step up to the plate. Here are some of the notes I have continued to mull over since the podcast. 1. Clarity – The entrepreneur must be very clear on why he/she is hiring employees 2. Trust – The relationship is based on trust and therefore the ‘personality’ of the employees hired must be aligned with those of the business owner 3. Communication – Expectations of both the employee and owner need to be very clear, need excellent honest communication 4. Patience – The business owner needs to understand that the employee will take time to learn the business 5. Vested Interest – Make employees have a vested interest (e.g. financial) in the success of the business 6. Culture & Fit – Hire for fit and attitude/work ethic, teach skills and competencies For those of you thinking about hiring on that first employee take that leap. Yes there will be a process and yes you will have to have conversations that might be uncomfortable but ultimately it is going to relieve so much stress off of your shoulders. She has been teaching people about decluttering there home and life since 2004 and knows it well. Her belief is that you can learn to declutter your home and life by making small, self love based decisions. Now what does that look like? She gave an example during the podcast that totally left me thinking. She said to start with your clothes. Part of me scoffed. I thought to myself, “I work from home why on earth does it matter what i'm wearing.” Then she dropped this little knowledge bomb. When you are confident it the clothes you are wearing that confidence rubs off on the rest of your life and work. You will begin to see that your energy is depleted When there is clutter in our homes and we don't know why we still own it. Alison said, “By learning how to choose, manage and organize our time and belongings, we can begin to build upon our decision making skills by engaging with our senses of touch, feel, and sight to help us choose which items spark true joy in us.” In the end everyone of us has a desire to have that perfect balance of a healthy & productive business. You dont have to give up one to have the other. When we choose to love the person in the mirror we end up loving those around us allot better. That love is easily translated into a healthy & productive business. Whats up Empire, Joshua Woodward here. I love family. If you listened to my most recent rant you heard all about it. But today we are getting even deeper. One of the things I truly enjoy is getting the advice and counsel of those who have lived more life than myself. Chris Green is one of those people. He has some incredible wisdom when it comes to the ecom world and is sharing his best tips for raising entrepreneurial kids. When I first met Chris his son had just launched his first book. I remember being truly amazed listening to this story. When i was his age all i could think about was my next lego creation. So how did Chris guide his son into such a rad opportunity? “What solves pretty much every problem is communication.” this was my favorite quote and the note I have come back to most often after this recording. Chris was talking about how important open communication and encouragement is between spouses. Ultimately this rolls over to how you communicate with your kids. I understand for some of us these can be two very loaded words. We all need healthy communication and encouragement but that isn’t always a reality. People can abuse the power of communication. When communication or lack thereof is abused it can create a very unsafe environment all around. Our words are more powerful than we could ever think. When children are involved in our lives we have the beautiful opportunity to shape and grow their ability to communicate, Regardless of your past or how others have treated us. When Chris found out his son had a knack for writing he began communicating with his son and encouraging this newfound excitement. This has now turned into three books and another one on the way. When we see something blossom in our kids its easy to get excited and finding that balance of pushing them into their destiny and shoving them into our will for their life is a very thin line. I feel like Chris has done a great job at this and is actively seeking to grow. Again this is about constant communication. It was never a one time deal. Chris had to be revisited this subject and encouraged the passion time and time again. There is a beautiful thing that happens for any kid when a parent champions them. Im sure you have all seen it. Whether on a basketball court or celebrating a good grade you see the excitement and fire that begins to burn. In my mind there is nothing more beautiful than watching your kids succeed and being able to champion them all the way to the finish line.
