Critical Issues Commentary Radio

Summary: Critical Issues Commentatry grew out of Bob DeWaay's passion to equip the saints for the work of ministry. In the late 1980's Bob met regularly with a group of local pastors, often presenting position papers on timely doctrinal issues. When he found that the messages were accepted by only a few of the attendees and rarely reached the pews, he chose to speak directly to the people by initiating a bimonthly newletter. Bob DeWaay is teacher and theologian at Gospel of Grace Fellowship in Edina, MN. Gospel of Grace Fellowship can be found on the web at http://www.gospelofgracefellowship.org/ where you can listen to sermons and other teachings.  The Law Does not Invalidate the Promise: Galatians 3:16-17 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:32:12

The Law Does not Invalidate the Promise: Galatians 3:16-17, presented by Bob DeWaay and Eric Douma. Paul claims that God's promise to Abraham cannot be invalidated by the Law of Moses. The promise to Abraham was given years earlier. We discuss other promises and prophecies, including Daniel 9, to show that they also are not invalidated. (duration 00:32:12)

 The Immutability of God's Promise: Galatians 3:15 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:35:35

The Immutability of God's Promise: Galatians 3:15, presented by Bob DeWaay and Eric Douma. This passage is a lesser to greater argument. If human covenants are not violated once ratified, how much more will God's covenant promises be kept. We address the logical fallacy of asserting the consequent in an "if...then" logical construction. (duration 00:35:35)

 Receiving the Spirit: Galatians 3:14 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:30:14

Receiving the Spirit: Galatians 3:14, presented by Bob DeWaay and Eric Douma. This passage highlights the importance of the Holy Spirit in our redemption. It has two purpose clauses (hina) that concern the blessing of Abraham and the reception of the Spirit. (duration 00:30:14)

 The Substitutionary Atonement: Galatians 3:13 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:32:22

The Substitutionary Atonement: Galatians 3:13, presented by Bob DeWaay and Eric Douma. We explore the meaning and application of the term redeemed and the doctrine of the penal, substitutionary atonement. The book of Hebrews describes the superiority of Christ's once for all sacrifice for sins compared to the Old Covenant sacrifices. (duration 00:32:22)

The Law is not of Faith: Galatians 3:11-12 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:33:55

The Law is not of Faith: Galatians 3:11-12, presented by Bob DeWaay and Eric Douma. This program explores the relationship between faith and love. There are many man-made substitutes for justification by faith and none are valid. We discuss what Paul meant when he said that the law is not of faith. (duration 00:33:55)

The Just Person Shall Live by Faith: Galatians 3:11 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:34:47

The Just Person Shall Live by Faith: Galatians 3:11, presented by Bob DeWaay and Eric Douma. Galatians 3:11 shows that justification applies to the individual, not just a group. Many contemporary theologies and philosophies deny this and thus obscure the gospel. (duration 00:34:47)

Blessed by Faith or Cursed by Works: Galatians 3:9-10 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:37:07

Blessed by Faith or Cursed by Works: Galatians 3:9-10, presented by Bob DeWaay and Eric Douma. Galatians 3:9 shows that those who have faith are blessed. Blessing does not mean having favorable circumstances, but right standing before God. Finally, we claim that scholarly resources are important even when we disagree with a scholar on other points. (duration 00:37:07)

"Crucified with Christ" means having died to the Law: Galatians 2:18-19 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:34:03

"Crucified with Christ" means having died to the Law: Galatians 2:18-19, presented by Bob DeWaay and Eric Douma. It was Jesus who declared all foods clean, so in verse 17 (to consider the context), to refuse table fellowship with Gentiles because of the concept of unclean foods is to make Jesus the minister of sin, which cannot be. (duration 00:34:03)

Not works, but faith in Christ: Galatians 2:16a | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:42:13

Not works, but faith in Christ: Galatians 2:16a, presented by Bob DeWaay and Eric Douma. This passage contains a chiastic structure that shows the emphasis: not works but faith in Christ. This is the key theme in Galatians. Paul makes it clear that Jesus Christ is the valid object of our faith. (duration 00:42:13)

Avoiding hypocrisy through means of grace: Galatians 2:15 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:35:45

Avoiding hypocrisy through means of grace: Galatians 2:15, presented by Bob DeWaay and Eric Douma. This passage contains a saying that was likely axiomatic: "we are not sinners like the Gentiles." Paul rebukes Peter because this attitude among Christians is a denial of the gospel. It led to hypocrisy in the church in Galatia. (duration 00:35:45)

 Peter's Hypocrisy Part 2: Galatians 2:13-14 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:37:58

Peter's Hypocrisy Part 2: Galatians 2:13-14, presented by Bob DeWaay and Eric Douma. We begin this broadcast with a discussion about how irrational emotion can cause believers to be "led off together." Christian theology cannot be built on human wisdom and emotion. We must, in a rational manner, search the Scriptures. (duration 00:37:58)

 Peter's Hypocrisy Part 1: Galatians 2:11-12 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:37:52

Peter's Hypocrisy Part 1: Galatians 2:11-12, presented by Bob DeWaay and Eric Douma. It was difficult to begin with for Jewish believers to have table fellowship with Gentile believers because of the previous wall of separation. We discuss how Peter previously had such fellowship and rightly defended it when criticized. (duration 00:37:52)

The Effectual Working of God through the Gospel: Galatians 2:8b-10 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:36:58

The Effectual Working of God through the Gospel: Galatians 2:8b-10, presented by Bob DeWaay and Eric Douma. We cannot add anything to the gospel without destroying it. We discuss what it means that the power of God works through the gospel. Powerful works of God are often misinterpreted by those who want to do greater miracles than Jesus did. (duration 00:36:58)

God Shows No Partiality: Galatians 2:6-8a | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:36:28

God Shows No Partiality: Galatians 2:6-8a, presented by Bob DeWaay and Eric Douma. Paul continues to withstand those who claim to have the support of apostles from Jerusalem (though they did not), saying that those who "seemed" to be important did not contribute to Paul's gospel which came directly from the resurrected Christ. (duration 00:36:28)

Refusing to Yield to False Teachers: Galatians 2:5 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:34:54

Refusing to Yield to False Teachers: Galatians 2:5, presented by Bob DeWaay and Eric Douma. Paul refused to yield to the false brothers for even an hour so that the truth of the gospel would not be compromised. We discuss the terminology "yoke" as it is used in regard to the law. False teachers want to put people under their yoke. (duration 00:34:54)
