Preventing Blindness, Protecting Vision Health: A Focus on Age-Related Macular Degeneration | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:30:00

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of severe, irreversible vision impairment in the world. In persons older than 40 years of age, AMD causes approximately 46% of cases of severe visual loss. Several risk factors can increase the chances of developing AMD, which include smoking, hypertension, ethnicity, age, and family history. This interview will discuss the diagnostic methods, as well as the therapeutic approaches to managing the spectrum of AMD.

Preserving Fertility in the Reproductive Age Female Patient with Cancer: The Critical Role of Collaboration Amongst Reproductive Endocrinologists, Ob/Gyns, and Oncologists | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 30:00

Advances in chemotherapy and radiation have increased survival in cancer patients, but many of these life-saving treatments often result in the loss of fertility. Breakthroughs in ovarian tissue cryopreservation and in vitro follicle maturation are brightening the outlook for preserving fertility in young women with cancer that are treated with potent oncotherapies. It is increasingly a possibility due to high survivorship rates in general and emerging reproductive technologies that give patients and their families options at the time of diagnosis to ensure a patient's future fertility. Oncofertility has emerged as an interdisciplinary field bridging biomedical and social sciences; and, examines issues regarding an individual's fertility options, choice and goals in light of cancer diagnosis, treatment and survivorship. 0.5 CME Credits

Update on Multiple Myeloma Clinical Trials with Proteasome Inhibition from the 55th ASH Annual Meeting | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:15:00

Please join Kenneth Anderson, MD, from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, as he presents an informative update on recent advances in the management of multiple myeloma. His discussion highlights findings presented at the American Society of Hematology (ASH) 55th annual conference in New Orleans, LA, where he reviews 1) new data for patients with newly-diagnosed multiple myeloma; 2) options for patients with relapsed and refractory disease; and 3) data on long-term survivors with multiple myeloma, those who have survived 10 or more years after their diagnosis. A special focus includes review of current and emergent novel therapies for multiple myeloma, and how they are reshaping outcomes for these patients.

Medical Management of Psoriasis: The Evolving Approaches | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 17:00

The diagnosis and management of patients with psoriasis presents challenges along the course of the disease. Criteria for selection of appropriate initial and ongoing therapies are often lacking or deficient in some regard. This discussion will explore the available treatment options as well as emerging therapies. 0.25 CME Credits

Individualizing Treatment of Major Depressive Disorder: Balancing Efficacy with Tolerability | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 30:00

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is an illness of great morbidity that affects many people across the world. The current goal for treatment of MDD is to achieve remission. However, despite scientific advances in the treatment for MDD, antidepressants as first-line agents yield only modest remission rates. Not achieving remission from depressive symptoms increases the risk of a more chronic and debilitating course of illness with frequent relapses. Although a number of reasons contribute to these modest outcomes, the presence of residual symptoms is a major problem. In addition, side effects and nonadherence should be kept in mind throughout treatment. Only 25% to 50% of patients with MDD adhere to their antidepressant regimen for the length of time recommended by depression guidelines, and nearly 50% of depressed patients referred from primary care to specialty care treatment fail to complete the referral. 0.5 CME Credits

Preventing Blindness, Protecting Vision Health: A Focus on Open-Angle Glaucoma | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:25:00

Blindness and visual impairment are among the 10 most common causes of disability in the United States and are associated with shorter life expectancy and lower quality of life. Glaucoma is a major public health problem in this country and the disease is manifest as a progressive optic neuropathy that, if left untreated, leads to blindness. Treatments to slow the progression of the disease are available; however, at least half of those who have glaucoma are not receiving treatment because they are unaware of their condition. An important goal of current research is to develop methods of early diagnosis to detect the disease in the early stages, when treatment is most effective in minimizing irreversible vision loss. Join us as Dr. Henry Jampel discusses these issues with the key points including current and new diagnostic modalities for the diagnosis of glaucoma, as well as the use of pharmacologic, surgical, and laser therapies for the treatment of glaucoma.

Preventing Blindness, Protecting Vision Health: A Focus on Cataracts | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:15:00

Cataracts are an important cause of blindness and visual impairment in the United States, accounting for approximately 50% of visual impairment in adults over the age of 40. It is estimated that the number of individuals with cataracts will increase by 50% by the year 2020. This interview will review the various intraocular lenses that are available and their advantages and disadvantages to achieve optimal outcomes in the treatment of cataracts, as well as discuss the use of surgical and laser therapies to achieve optimal outcomes in the treatment of cataracts and the strategies to prevent post-surgery complications.

What is the Impact of New Immunotherapies on Survival in Metastatic Melanoma? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:27:30

Nearly 77,000 new cases of melanoma are expected to be diagnosed in the U.S. in 2013. This CME expert interview explores the impact of new immunotherapies on emergent management strategies that focus on optimizing outcomes for patients with inoperable or metastatic melanoma. The interview focuses on processes of T-cell activation and checkpoint controls, as well as establishing patterns of tumor response to immunotherapy.

SGLT-2 Inhibitors: An Emerging Therapeutic Class in the Treatment of Diabetes Part 1 of 2 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 24:30

In early 2012, the ADA and the EASD issued a joint position statement emphasizing patient specific treatment of hyperglycemia for T2DM. The impetus underlying the new guidelines was the growing appreciation of the complexity surrounding contemporary glycemic management in patients with T2DM. Notwithstanding, the ability of many physicians to adequately select and intensify T2DM treatment regimens has been historically poor, suffering from lack of confidence in managing complex combinations of agents across myriad patient demographics and comorbid conditions. SGLT-2 inhibitors are an emerging class of drug which have been added to this armamentarium. 0.5 CME Credits
