Welcome to another SuperFastBusiness.com interview. This time I’ve got a really good friend of mine back for another interview; we’ve done a few before. I’d like to welcome John Carlton.   John: James, how are you doing?   James: Good. How do we bill you these days? Used to be “the most ripped off copywriter ever.” Are you now like a publishing mogul or something?   John: No, I still prefer “the most ripped off marketing guru in existence” just because my stuff has been ripped off a lot. But that was just me positioning myself in front of the pirates, so they didn’t get all the joy out of it.   I couldn’t stop the piracy so I thought I just take a little juice out of them. But, yeah, I’m actually kind of semi-retired which for me means working 30 hours a week instead of the 70 I was when I was running a full-time business.   So I settled back and I started doing more writing, and my passion now is very much in writing for wider and wider audiences. So the blog was good up to a point. I had a newsletter that some people still remember called The Marketing Rebel Rant from about 2001 until 2008 or 2009 when I put that to bed and moved over full time to the blog. And now I’m into Kindle publishing.   It’s a glorious time to be a self publisher (http://www.superfastbusiness.com/business/how-to-self-publish-your-own-physical-book-to-build-authority/), and the tipping point just happened recently. We’ve just gone into this world where Amazon, God bless them, has bought up CreateSpace and created this amazing paradigm for people to get published digitally up for Kindle and get published with printed books that will be printed on order.   In other words you can now have a printed book now with CreateSpace which is a physical publishing arm of Amazon. You don’t have to print out any books beforehand. They will print the book when they receive an order.

Welcome to another episode of SuperFastBusiness.com. In our continued interview series, today I’ve got an unusual suspect online. He’s got his own collection of suit of armor and he’s interested in all sorts of strange things but most importantly, he’s a marketing and design expert. I’d like to welcome to the call, David Counsell from Inferno Marketing and Design.   David: Hey, James. How you doing?   James: Good! Now you have got a very, very broad range of marketing experience. You’ve been in the game for a while. Perhaps give us a brief run of to where you’re at right now.   David: OK, well, for the last 18 years, I’ve been running my own advertising agency. In fact at one stage, we were running two advertising agencies but we got a little burnt out with doing that. So we sold one of them and cut ourselves back to one but before that, I was a radio announcer for 15 years and before that I was your general university dropout... really.   James: Right. So you’ve gone in there and you’ve been into lots of marketing and I think the point of interest for us today is going to be around crafting a marketing message and using different channels.   I imagine you’ve seen quite a bit of change with the way that business are marketing with the introduction of the Internet. You know, It’s come along during your career. Have you seen much change around the way that people have to market these days?   No One Thought The Internet Would Develop Into Anything David: Look... Enormous change! I actually remember I’m so old I remember when the Internet first started and I got a connection to the Internet at 28K speed and I made my first website in 1994. That was an interesting experience and at the time, no one thought it was going to be anything.   I had a joke email address because no one thought that you know, it would develop into anything. These days, if you’re not using the Internet or some sort of online marketing point, then you’re really missing out because really, I actually think the pivotal thing was the invention of the iPhone.   James: Right.   David: When the iPhone was invented six years ago, the world totally exploded. Everything in media and advertising changed. Up until that point, sure you can advertise online but there were... there were still a lot of resistance. People weren’t getting into it as much as now today but when you put a smartphone into someone’s hand, they could access the Internet 24/7.

Essential E-commerce Tips from Ezra Firestone | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:32:04

I’ve got 90 minutes and I’m going to fill it so I’m just going to start. Cool. Wonderful. So FastWebFormula4 (http://www.superfastbusiness.com/membership/), my name is Ezra Firestone. Thank you so much for being here and I’m going to go through this slide… has nothing to do with e-commerce.   I like to put this at the front of my presentations because I sent this presentation to a friend to have him kind of edit and look at it and he sent it back with this picture at the front as if I wouldn’t notice that it was there. So now I like to like show it off.   So one thing that James said at the start, before this session, was whether or not you are interested in a physical products business, people who own physical product businesses are fantastic folks to do services for.   No matter what type of service you offer we kind of need it all because everything that’s relevant to an information marketing business, it also turns out is relevant to a physical product business in this day and age where faceless businesses are dying and businesses of all kinds.   Even ones that are selling physical products, need a brand and a personality and things like that so whether or not you’re interested in this business model, if you consume this information and look at it from the perspective of how you can use this for your own business, that would be beneficial to you.   E-COMMERCE + PARASITE SEO + VISIBILITY + CONVERSION + X? So we’re going to be talking about e-commerce specifically, which is my business model; a bit about parasite SEO; and then visibility which is traffic; conversion; and then the third piece of the puzzle which is something that I’ve learned from James over the past six months that have transformed all of my e-commerce businesses.   A couple of big reasons why I prefer a physical product business model or why I like the physical product business model:   The first is that there’s no persuasion necessary to sell products, right? People are already looking for those things. You don’t need a long sales funnel. They were looking for a salt shaker when they came to your website and they buy that thing when they get there, and all you really have to do is kind of make it look nice.

Website Package Changes | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3:33

(http://twitter.com/home/?status= We’re doing what we suggest our customers do. via @JamesSchramko http://lnx2.co/2zT)Transcription:James Schramko here with a website news update and this is about a change that we’ve made at ATLWeb.com regarding the websites that we build.     As you know, we specialize in WordPress and we used to have a few packages; we actually had three packages and now we’ve just made two packages for websites and it’s really simple. Both packages are responsive. That means that the website that we supply you will work across different browser sizes. So now there’s only two types. What are they?Pre-Done Responsive One is the Pre-done Responsive (http://www.superfastbusiness.com/services/websites/pre-done-responsive-themes/), which is very low-priced. They’re already made, you’re just going to pick one from the gallery, we will update it to put in your logo and we’ll transfer some content across if you have some content that you’d like to put on there, and that will be ready to go really fast.   Custom Responsive The other one is the Custom Responsive (http://www.superfastbusiness.com/services/websites/custom-wordpress-website-faq/). That’s where we do a design study, we send you mock ups. You approve it. We then build it for you from scratch, it’s custom. We’re going to put that on top of a Genesis Framework because that’s the framework that we use most.  But that will work in any device.   So simply we have two website packages: The Pre-Done Responsive WordPress website or the Custom Responsive WordPress. That’s nice and simple, that’s part of what we’re doing at ATLWeb.com, we’re making things easy for you. Once you’ve got the website, then there are other things we can help you with. If you like to have a few customized things, we’ll support you with that. We’ll help you try and make those work.   Hourly Packages Also, we have hourly packages (http://www.superfastbusiness.com/services/websites/hourly-work/). This is our most popular package. It’s where you just have a project manager and we’ll work on whatever you need with your website. We can help you update opt-ins, we can help you add scripts or codes, we can move things around for you.  It’s like you have your own project manager in-house, except it’s with my team and you’re only paying for what you use in five hour brackets.   Plus you don’t have that hassle of having to deal with oDesk or Fiverr or cheap suppliers who flake on you or disappear; or that Russian programmer you can’t understand. Now you just got one central helpdesk. It’s the same operator who’s going to help you with any other package you buy from our company.   So I look forward to helping you over at ATLWeb.com (http://www.superfastbusiness.com/services/websites/). Hopefully we’re making things easy for you and keep your eye out for the new, redesigned website. We’re doing what we suggest our customers do. We’re improving our speed. We’re improving our conversions. And hopefully, you really enjoy the user experience of dealing with our company. Kyle, this is the fourth Fast Web Formula in a row that I’ve asked Kyle to come and share some ideas with us and that is because Kyle is an expert at the exact same thing that a lot of us are doing here, which is dealing with business, services, out there consulting, etcetera.   And always good information, top of the class, a very, very active contributor to SuperFastBusiness (http://www.superfastbusiness.com/membership/) community.  So we’re going to hear from Kyle for the next half hour. Alright, I’m going to leave it with you, Kyle.   Kyle:        Thanks, mate. OK, real quick show of hands. Who’s already doing some kind of local business selling services to other businesses type of thing? Alright and everyone else kind of knows what it’s all about? I’m not talking to newbies here?  Yup, alright.   So I’m going to skip all the introductory stuff, all the stuff about the opportunity and how much money can you make and all that kind of stuff and just jump straight into the whole business building aspect of it.   4 Steps to 6 Figures in 92 Days Everything I’m talking about applies to all types of businesses. So if you’re doing any other type of business, these four steps I’m going to talk about apply to you as well. So don’t think that just because you’re not doing local business, this doesn’t apply to you.   So when you’re starting a business, there’s literally a hundred or more things that you can do and if you try and do them all, you’ll go absolutely crazy. You’ll get stuck, procrastinating and never getting anywhere so the whole theme of this weekend is the 4%. So I’ve put together the 4% of things that I’ve seen that actually make a difference in growing a business.   The 4 things that matter. So I went through... I think there was three different trainings I’ve done in the last year or so, and I pulled out all the common bits that we use to regard people’s businesses. Then I went through some of my more recent success stories and we pulled out all the common threads that they had as well. These are the 4 Steps that I’m going to share with you guys today.   Solve The Problem So the very first thing, the most important thing when you’re starting a consulting business or any type of business is figuring out the problem that you solve. Not being focused on the product that you sell but the actual problem you solve in the marketplace.   First Mistake: Focusing On The Product So the first mistake I see everyone making and even people who should know better is they focus on the product, you know, “I build websites.” As soon as you say that, you sound like every other guy that sells websites.

(http://twitter.com/home/?status= What you really want to be focusing on is relevant user experience. via @JamesSchramko http://lnx2.co/2zR)Transcription:James Schramko here and I’ve got some findings for you about search engine ranking factors.     Search Engine Ranking Factors So Moz.com published a search engine ranking factors document every year, and just recently they posted their 2013 search enging ranking factors. The overview is that: still the most important thing for search engine ranking is links, up to 40% they say. And that’s good news if you’re an SuperFastBusiness Traffic Services (http://www.superfastbusiness.com/services/traffic/) or LinkJuice (http://www.superfastbusiness.com/services/traffic/linkjuice/) customer, because we’re still able to get you good quality links to your website.  Also, they felt that having the keyword on page is still important. We talk about having it in the page description but also it might be useful to be mentioned at least once on your page and relevant phrases, and perhaps if you have images that they should be named appropriately. They also have come to the conclusion that social ranking factors are important but perhaps not just quite as important just yet. Round about 7%, they feel.   Stand Out Thru Relevant User Experience So what does that mean for you and your future of search engine optimization? What you really want to be focusing on is relevant user experience. Over time, I think it’s likely that Google’s algorithm will take into account how functional a site is, how useful it is. And I know from searching the Internet and finding junky sites, when I’m trying to look things up it is pretty frustrating.   So you want to make sure that when someone arrives at your site, that it is well structured, easy to use, helpful and rich in media that is going to stand out from every other site on the Internet. If you do these basics, you’re going to have good rankings.   I hope you’ve enjoyed this update. I’m going to link to the Moz search engine ranking factors post right here on the show notes. And then things like backache or neck ache happens because that constant pressure on the spine around the neck area pulls in and then after hours of doing that it becomes achy. So, here’s a little tip:   Tips Step 1: Always remember to open your heart. Step 2: Lifting the sternum up. Step 3: Pulling the navel or the belly in and Step 4: Drawing the chin in just a little bit. So we’re avoiding this or this. We’re just drawing the chin in so the entire body from the hip above is lifting up, up, up. Activating all the muscles around the core, putting less pressure on the spine. Yeah, and maybe even put a little note next to the desk: Open your heart, or Lift your heart, or Lift your crown. Just a little reminder to do these little steps. So, revising one more time. Belly in. Sternum up. Shoulders back and relax. Chin gently drawn in. Lift the crown of your head, and stretch the sides of your lips.   I’m looking forward to see you again. It’s conversions.   It’s one of those little simple words that rolls off the tongue that nobody’s focused on. We did hear, Ezra talked about it yesterday in E-commerce (You don’t mind if I talk while you eat do you, Victoria? That’s right. Just checking. Laughs).   Conversions So in e-commerce it’s vital. Remember that little cash flow thing? You make more sales and what it costs? The conversions part is more important probably even in the traffic. You don’t need a lot of people if you’ve got your conversions in place and that’s why I’ve been so interested in it.   So I became aware of some software that allowed me to turn my YouTube videos on my website into an opt-in at any point in the video. And I looked at it, I thought about that, and I thought, “That’s really cool.”   LeadPlayer and LeadPages When you think about my strategy of continual content creation, every single video that I put on my website, every single page that I add is now a squeeze page. And that software was called LeadPlayer and I thought that that’s...I get it.   So I purchased it and straight after I purchased, I got an email reply back from the sales chief, Clay Collins, and he said, “Hey, dude. Thanks for buying the software. It’s really awesome.” And I said to him, “I’ve already installed it within minutes. It was so easy and I like it and it integrated seamlessly with my Office AutoPilot (http://www.superfastbusiness.com/recommended/office-autopilot-review-office-autopilot-bonus/) and I’ve tried lots of plugins and integrations and putting in variables.   It was so easy and I’m like, the design was notches above what’s out there. And the professionalism, the contact made straightaway I could totally relate to. I’ve just been talking about that this morning.   So I struck up this relationship and I said, “I love this product”. Where can I find my affiliate link? I would love to promote it and I got hooked up to an affiliate program and I started just taking screenshots and sharing with people how I was using it and how easy it was to install and I offered it on my BuyWithBonus.com (http://www.superfastbusiness.com/recommended) site and started making sales.   And then there was this other innovation,

Today’s topic is connecting and I brought on a special guest Larry Benet from L.A. Welcome, Larry.   Larry:        Thank you, James. Appreciate you having me. Super excited.   James:    Larry, probably the question on everyone’s mind is who DON’T you know?  Because you seem connected with just about everybody.   The Principles of Adding Value To Your Network Larry:    Well you know, that’s always a nice compliment you know that I always get.  But you know it is true that I do believe everyone can tap into some of the principles and the strategies and the tactics that I use in every single day for them to get very similar results in whatever industry or business that they’re on.   And the bottom line is you know, for everyone listening today, what that they care about is how can they get whatever they want in business and their life faster as a result of the adding value to their network.   And you know, we’ll share some stories and principles and strategies today, but I want everyone to look through the lens of how they could apply these principles in their life so they can have you know, gain more things, have more fun whatever they want to do and spend more time with their love ones and on their passions whatever that might be.   You know I just got off the phone just a few minutes ago with one of the top book agents in North America as we’re talking about my book connection currency and what’s interesting is she was so super excited. She was the agent for the book you may have heard of called “The One Minute Manager” which is by the gentleman Ken Blanchard.   But the reality is when you apply these principles, you can get things done in a fraction of the time it would normally take. In other words, I literally just did a Facebook post just literally minutes before you and I got on the phone to do for this interview and one of the strategies that I like to use that anyone could use is what I call Trigger Events.   Trigger Event So a trigger event could be someone’s birthday. So yesterday I reached out to a famous actress, her name’s Sophia Bush and the reality is I can’t remember the last time I... it’s been a very long time since I saw her. I’ve only met her one time. But because it was her birthday, you know, I reached out to her, wished her a happy birthday, she responded back.   Yesterday on late night television here in the States, I was watching the Tonight Show, and Lionel Richie, the famous singer, he was on there playing a song and they talked about he was kicking off his concert tour. You know I’ve met Lionel on one or two occasions.   I happen to have his email, so I emailed Lionel.

Leave a voice message.   Click on that and leave your message and you’ll probably be in a future episode. Now, there’s a couple of other little running notes but I’ll get to those in a little while. For now, let’s listen to the listeners. See what’s happening.   Listener 1:     James. Ben here. Just sent you an email on the AFR Tech’s Tuesday pages. It would be really good for readers, especially small business because they can read some sort of weekly content from you, sort of aimed at big business but I think a lot of other people read the Australian Financial Review, you may get too much business out of it if they’re happy to have your content there.   Number two, I missed your meeting a week or two ago in Sydney. I’d love to know rough dates of when you’re planning to do it next year so I can arrange my work around it and come. Might be the first person inquiring.   Number three, I’m still using a Windows, using a netbook Asus 12-inch and the occasional virus which is a real pain to clean off. Maintaining antivirus and spyware is not too much work but you know, all in all it is a bit, it does use up a fair amount of time every year and I’m just wondering about moving to Mac and I heard you done that on one of your podcasts.   Wondering if you would benefit your listeners if you give a brief plus and minuses of moving over to Mac. I know they’re not totally virus free and if a lot of people move over to them, there may be more viruses on their system but I think there’s a big advantage of moving to Mac. I do have iPhone, iPad and are intuitive and easy to use.  But there is a loss of flexibility because you’re locked in to Apple systems.  Anyway, thank you very much.  Bye.   James:    Hey Ben! There’s some great pointers there. Firstly, number one, that’s a good suggestion: me contributing to an offline/online publication. A lot of print newspapers have been on online publication these days and it’s a good tip for getting more traffic,

Cutting Back To Move Forward Faster | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:53

In today's episode:00:06 - Rethink your product lineup 00:37 - The rosebush analogy 00:58 - Promote products and services that workPromote your offers with quality SEO (http://www.superfastbusiness.com/services/traffic/) Be a member of SilverCircle (http://www.silvercircle.com)Quotables:"...if you decide that it’s not worth it, prune it." - James - Click To Tweet (http://clicktotweet.com/AtO8d) "...cut down on the products and offers that aren’t working and focus on the ones that are working..." - James - Click To Tweet (http://clicktotweet.com/ka8Bp)Transcription:James Schramko here with a business tip on optimizing your business.   Pruning Your Business So your business will probably have products and services and every now and then, you have to prune them. What do I mean by that? Look at your numbers. Have a look at what you’re selling and more importantly, have a look at what’s not selling and decide if you’ve given them a fair chance. Have you marketed them? Have you told your customers about them?   And if not, then you need to pivot in some way. You either need to re-word them, you can reconfigure the offer, get someone to test it for free and see if they like it, and if you decide that it’s not worth it, prune it. And it works just the same way that it works in nature.   Making Business Bloom If you have a rosebush, it’s going to have big vibrant roses on one part of the bush. And on the other part would be the dead buds that are still on the branch. What you need to do is you need to cut the branch because those dead buds are taking the energy away from the new buds that need to bloom. So prune your business, cut down on the products and offers that aren’t working and focus on the ones that are working and drive your focus there. You’ll see them increase. You’ll be more profitable.   Have an E-commerce Store? If you have an e-commerce store, go through your SKU items and find out which ones are the most profitable and put some effort there to create feature pages and then hook up an SEO campaign to your feature pages and watch them grow.   Well, I hope you enjoy this tip on pruning, I’m James Schramko.   Please leave a comment below:

Why You Need Faster Hosting | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:17

Faster hosting obviously enhances the experience of visiting a website, but that's not all. Why You Need Fast Hosting Business Website Traffic Jul-4-2013 // In this episode: 00:10 - Clay Collins test data about conversions 00:38 - How to get low priced dedicated hosting 01:11 - Test your current website speed   Get fast dedicated  hosting here  Quotables: "Page speed has an enormous effect on conversion rate." - Clay - Click To Tweet "The faster the better. Get your website on a dedicated server today." - James - Click To Tweet   James Schramko here, with a tip that can really help your SEO results, but also make it better for your customers, and you can sell more. So at my recent FastWebFormula event, Clay Collins was a special guest, and he does a lot of testing in conversions optimization, and the thing that he really emphasized was that you have to have fast hosting. (Video recording) Clay: So tip 1 (these are eight conversion tips): Stop using crappy sh*tty hosting. Page speed has an enormous effect on conversion rate. An enormous, enormous, enormous effect. Like more than you have ever thought possible. (Back to James) We Offer Faster Hosting I put my sites on a dedicated server. We also provide that service for other customers. We actually have a package that looks after your website. We make sure that it's on a very fast,  brand new, dedicated server. We update plugins and it includes some development time for little changes. We have a team who's good at security, and they're very familiar with WordPress. So if you need faster hosting than what you have right now, head over to ATLWeb.com and take our maintenance package. I'd be happy to look after your website. Test Your Speed If you want to find out how fast your current website is, go to serverspeed.com and test your current website hosting. It will give you a comparison about how fast your website is compared to major websites on the Internet. And when you think about it, it makes sense. A faster loading site makes it easier for your customer to find what they're looking for without having to wait. And not everyone has as fast an Internet connection as you might have, especially in more regional areas. I know that because I suffered it for years, having very slow-loading Internet.  What’s New With Google? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 6:22

In this video:00:24 - SEO tip: Google really loves this 01:03 - Add these to your site 02:43 - Use remarketing responsibly 03:31 - You've got to be mobile-friendly because of this fact... 05:17 - How to make your site mobile responsive?Get a mobile-responsive website from us (http://www.superfastbusiness.com/services/websites/pre-done-responsive-themes/) Seven years of doing SEO has taught us a few things See More (http://www.superfastbusiness.com/services/traffic/)Quotables: Put the best images you can on your website - James - Click To Tweet (http://clicktotweet.com/4XiJc) You’ve got to have a mobile ready website and people start their journey there - James - Click To Tweet (http://clicktotweet.com/F7akj) Use remarketing responsibly - James - Click To Tweet (http://clicktotweet.com/2MNbi)Transcription:Alright, James here and I’ve just come back from a day at Google training yesterday. So I’m going to go through some of the highlights in today’s show.   When I went to Google, one of the big things that we’re talking about is the multiple screens that people use. So I think it’s appropriate that I use the iPad mini to go through my notes that I took there.   Viral YouTube One of the things they talked about for SEO was how viral YouTube videos can really get presence so if you can be lucky enough to make a great video that goes viral, use it on your site. Google really favors YouTube for some reason, maybe because they own it.   New System for AdWords One of the big difference is the enhance campaigns and that is a new system for AdWords. You will be forced to migrate to it. And part of the research behind this is about how many people use smartphones, smart tablets and big screens and TVs and I’ll share some of those stats in a second.   Image Ad Marketing Another thing is, the image extension is being rolled out. I’ve been talking about image marketing over and over again and now they’ve shown that the AdWords with the three images where they must be relevant to the content, they must be relevant to the keyword, they must not have an advertisement in them, they must be good quality images, are showing that you can bump someone else off the top of the page.   So if you see three picture ads that are highly relevant, that’s a Google AdWords image ad. And please put the best images you can on your website (http://www.superfastbusiness.com/services/content). I’ll even link to some training idea about image marketing just a few weeks ago because it was so relevant.   I heard about this.  They’ve got rules around white space, rules around logos, and must be relevant. So, image ad marketing’s big deal.   Google Ads Shopping For Google ads shopping, they recommend you publish a merchant fee, that you refresh it everyday, and that you optimize your products by flagging the best sellers and bringing them into their super ad group. The Keyword Planner is replacing the Estimator. So it’s bringing in three things into one.   You can research your ads, you can estimate how much it costs and then you can start to group your ads together. So you’ll be forced to use that but it pretty much has the same functionality.   Be Smartphone Ready There’s a lot more phone usage and this is the real core message from my visit to Google: You’ve got to be smartphone ready. I’m going to give you some stats on that. Now in analytics, you’ll be able to use multi-currency and of course they got a lot more enhanced social sharing metrics now. I think they’re trying to push Google+.You could also share dashboards much more easily with customers. If you happen to have customers, the Google dashboards are heaps easier in analytics now instead of the difficult process to login. And it will show Google display ads which is important.   You can see impressions so you can see which ads are being used. So they say use remarketing responsibly. Use remarketing responsibly.
