 EPISODE 326 - Adam Wingard Director Spotlight | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:56:26

We're back, Well, not we exactly... it's a one-off show this week spotlighting an up and coming figure in the world of horror genre - Adam Wingard. Having seen his recent wide release You're Next and taking a little more from it than the generally dismissive reviews, prompted a trip through a quite interesting filmography from this new voice. From his $2,000 debut film Pop Skull, to the insane, violent Home Sick through A Horrible Way To Die, it was fascinating to witness Wingard expand, evolve and mature as a director. It's not wall to wall praise to be sure, there are some cloying cliches and choices which get brought up but overall there is a sense of earnest glee in the violent decadence, and most importantly honest tribute to the horror genre roots that formed the filmmaker. Along the way the topic of "mumblegore" is discussed with tip of the iceberg coverage of the web of names and faces that are behind the movement. Finally, a three pack of voicemails get covered catching up on some excellent discussion topics from the past few months and allows for the sharing of great title recommendations and show topic suggestions. Thanks in advance for putting up with your host this week, solo-casting is a tough gig. Thanks as well for those who have been shopping through our Amazon affiliate widget - every little bit helps. We'll be back in the saddle again next week.  EPISODE 324 - The Non-Anniversary Show | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:28:36

6-6-6: The Non-Anniversary Anniversary Show... Wow, can you believe that it has now been SIX years since the Horror Etc podcast starting broadcasting? Neither can Tony and Ted, so they promptly decided to forget all about it... Actually, it has been a while since your two hosts have been able to sit down and record an episode together what with recent travels and such, and in the interim our sixth anniversary came and went without fanfare. It's a From the Hip of sorts with a fair amount of horror-related recent watches including: the remake of Carrie, revisits of Stoker, The Purge, Attack the Block and Grabbers, some festival watches such as Animals and Omnivores, recent box office fare like Escape Plan and Bad Grandpa (?). There are totally random inclusions like The Hunter (2011) and Killing Them Softly (2012), the recent criterion release of The Uninvited (1944) all culminating in the surreal experiment film Escape From Tomorrow! Throw in a visit with Christopher Walken (well, kinda), some Doctor Who indulgence and the consumption of a fiendish concoction brewed in the despicable depths of hell! ...And of course what would an anniversary episode be without a visit to Schlock Corner featuring stalwart anniversary favourite, William Shatner? ...This is why we're still here, 6 years and counting. Enjoy! As always we welcome your comments: horroretc@gmail.com Voicemail (206) 337-5324 Check out our Poltergeist episode at www.bandcamp.horroretc.com WWW.HORRORETC.COM

 EPISODE 322 - Scardiff Special | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:08:48

It's a trip across the pond to Cardiff (Wales) in this very special instalment of the Horror Etc podcast, as Anthony attends his first-ever UK convention appearance. Throughout the course of an amazing weekend Tony gets to meet several HETC listeners, host a panel on classic monsters (featuring Emmerdale star Dominic Brunt), enjoy a friendly conversation with new pals Bobby Rhodes (Demons) and Alex Levi (filmmaker) and screen his film "Terror of Dracula" before an appreciative audience... and the mic was rolling all the while. It's a special one-off program filled with travel - adventure - intrigue... and Ken Dodd?!  EPISODE 321 - The Phantom Reviewer | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:16:04

Welcome to a bonus episode featuring an interview with none other than our very own... Anthony. Listeners may know that Anthony has been working on his independent version of Phantom of the Opera this year and word reached the Phantom Reviewer - who set up the interview we are sharing in this episode. Phantom Reviews is a one-stop resource offering reviews of virtually every Phantom movie and spinoff ever made. Anthony and TPR chatted about the production, the decision making process behind this adaptation, favourite film versions, performaces and much more. It was a great discussion on a subject of obvious interest to both parties. Whether the Phantom is for you or not, this episode offers a unique peek at what Anthony has been up to when not hosting the horroretc podcast.  EPISODE 320 - The Quatermass Series | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:49:44

Welcome all to a special episode celebrating all things Quatermass. Why so special? The Quatermass spotlight was delivered by our good friend and newly minted correspondent John in Ireland. Through the course of 4 segments, John recounts the series in whole including discussions and diversions detailing its history and impact upon the BBC, Doctor Who, Hammer studios and the horror genre in whole. All this and an additional segment prepared by Anthony and friends discussing Hammer's 1971 classic Hands of the Ripper in a movie club format. We hope you enoy this original presentation of a subject deserving the attention we have denied it until now. The episode time markers are as follows: The Quatermass Experiment 5:00 - 22:46 Quatermass II 22:46 - 37:35 Quatermass and the Pit 37:35 - 56:53 The Quatermass Conclusion 56:53 - 1:18:14 The Hands of the Ripper 1:22:56 - 1:48:56 Special thanks to John for the excellent subject specific contributions. More special one-off material to come this week, stay tuned.  EPISODE 319 - From The Hip (Gravity Edition) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:17:16

Is there something pulling us down? It certainly isn't Alfonzo Cauron's latest feature Gravity which we caught up with and give our thoughts on. No, the problem is scheduling. With your hosts travelling out of town to a variety of destinations (including a bucket list item for Ted), we had trouble getting a themed episode together this week... and it shows. We had an idea to tackle 'stranded' as a subject including scenarios and strategies but things came up woefully short. At least we had some great laughs and got to discuss at least one spectacular film. In true From The Hip fashion we were all over the map this episode but ended up with some interesting talking points. Anthony gives us a status report on The Walking Dead having made it through the first few episodes of season 2 - his conclusion may surprise you. Ted provides a final verdict on The Walking Dead point and click game, we discuss the brand new Machete Kills, the few weeks old Insidious Chapter 2 and... oh man - the brand new William Shatner album Ponder the Mystery! Throw in some unearthed "lost" episodes of Doctor Who and a Simpsons couch gag directed by Guillermo del Toro and packed with genre homages as schlock corner and we've got ourselves a show.  EPISODE 317 - Fear 101 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:34:10

Fear is defined as an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat. Well, we're here to discuss whether fear is really so unpleasant after all. It's an old school episode of the podcast where we simply sat down and conversed over the subject of what draws us as genre fans to be confronted with uncomfortable, frightful material. What elements of the horror genre are most effective and why. The distinction is made between terror, horror and revulsion - the three stages of the scare experience. Stephen King considers terror to be the "finest emotion" of the three and we tend to agree. Calling all the way back to episode 2 of the podcast, we remain proponents of suspense and atmosphere. It was a really engaging session throwing out thoughts and ideas about the use of horror as a coping mechanism to escape the ever-present fear of death and the unknown, and how scare tactics have evolved in recent years and why. This is what Horroretc was meant to be about. We do have a few random topics to toss in as well including Anthony's recent dabbling in X-Files, discussion of The Frozen Ground, Kon-Tiki(?), Coraline and the Nicolas Winding Refn's follow up to the superb Drive, Only God Forgives. Quick heads up - it took us a little while to get rolling on the main subject as we pondered the direction of the show in recent months, so things don't really get started until the 19:00 mark.  EPISODE 316 - Book Club Addendum | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:16:13

Back to the bookstore. As promised we follow up our Book Club episode with a second literature themed show. This time out the guys meet at the local book shop to discuss some works that horroretc listeners have produced. The main portion of the show is an interview with listener / author Nicole Cushing who shares her own insights and experiences as a genre writer, and words of advice for those with similar goals in mind. Following the book talk, we briefly chat about a few subjects including The Walking Dead point and click videogame, a disturbing documentary Blackfish, an odd anthology drama The Place Beyond the Pines, and wrap up the late summer box office roundup with quick thoughts on Kick Ass 2.  EPISODE 315 - What We've Been Watching X | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:22:49

After a month of roaming, we're back in the studio again. It's been a very busy summer so we take the opportunity to catch our breath and kick back with some offerings haven't been casual banter. Is it From The Hip or What We've Been Watching? We don't know, but there are plenty of recent watches shared mixed in with the usual tangents. The late summer big screen offerings haven't been great but we did find a couple titles worth mentioning - The World's End rounds out the Pegg/Frost/Wright pseudo trilogy in a satisfying way, and Ted believes You're Next offers more than what appears to be just another home invasion slasher outing. Looking for more than what's there or tuning in to the underlying tongue in cheek vibe meant for horror fans to pick up on - you be the judge. Things veer wildly across genres as we discuss the ultra-moody Last Will and Testament of Rosalind Leigh, classic Hammer studio lesbian vampires in Vampire Lovers, pause for thoughtful drama with Mud and Prince Avalanche, indulge in nostalgia with Ghostbusters and People Under The Stairs, and rave over Chan Wook Park's mesmerizing Stoker. Things close out with another Steven Miller indie outing (hot of the heels of Silent Night), The Aggression Scale - a young Dexter stand-in fights back against home invaders. Of course, we can`t have a Robocop remake trailer release go by without throwing in our two cents. Our promised book club follow up is coming very soon.  EPISODE 314 - The Horroretc Book Club 6 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:42:43

Welcome to the latest convening of the Horroretc Book Club. Our appreciation of genre literature has been well established and are very pleased to share another collection of recommendations and reviews from not only our own libraries but from the community at large. We have a great mix of audio and written contributions that span a wide range of subject matter and authors. Opening up the floor we discuss some picks from our own book shelf, this time focusing on the compilation, reference and essay format. Some key recommends include the Mammoth Book of Slasher Movies, Shock Cinema, the Eyeball Compendium, Beyond Horror Holocaust, Killing For Culture, and 200 Alternative Horror Films You Need To See. Things move on to listener picks which span everything from Doc Savage battling King Kong, the S&M themed Nightwhere, Feed, The Descent, Proof, Red Shirts, Cthulu Mythos, Summer of Night and even Enders Game. There are many graphic novel suggestions as well that allowed for some commentary on the comic options seen at Fan Expo and thoughts on recent reads that had not been shared on the podcast yet. Of course there are the usual tangents that took us from Machete Kills to Discovery Channel's faux Mermaid exposes, to reading in the bathroom. Thanks to all who participated in the Book Club, one of our favourite annual traditions. Special thanks as well to those who supported us through downloading the Poltergeist premium show as we explain exactly how that ended up saving us from a recent webhost outage.  EPISODE 313 - Festival of Fear '13 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:03:48

Welcome to our annual Fan Expo road trip, this time we're almost exclusively on the road. It was a different experience this time out from previous years and we share our honest opinions on what the shortcomings were from the perspective of horror fans. We did have a new addition to the crew with us to provide a first time attendee's reactions (now that we're seasoned veterans), to remind us that a genre convention is still ultimately a pretty cool experience. On the way to the Expo we discussed some recent watches including Anthony's Superman outdoor screening experience, Ted's wrap up of The Wire, initial take on the final season of Breaking Bad and serious concerns over the final season of Dexter. Of course, there is no avoiding the latest Batman casting announcement and we have our opinions. On the drive back we share our takeaway of the Expo this year, the highlights and unfortunately the disappointments. All this as well as a mini-review of the 'con' experience from our special guest. Special thanks to the horroretc followers who we had a chance to meet up with at the show, proof positive that we have an awesome listener community.  EPISODE 312 - The Candyman Series | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:20:41

Candyman... Candyman... Candyman... ah, screw it. This week we take a look at another icon of horror, Tony Todd's Candyman and the three films of the franchise. It was a beautiful summer day so we set up the podcast on a local patio to chat horror, continuing the string of episodes recorded on-site. Candyman was based on a Clive Barker short story and the unique edge of his style made it through to the 1992 classic. There was much discussion over the smothering atmosphere, the imposing presence (both physical and audible) of the legendary figure, the bizarre and unexplained elements of the myth, the paced and mature approach taken in approaching the material, the above par performances and a lot more. Candyman at its core is rife with deep themes from tragic love affairs to racism, hatred and vengeance. Then there came the sequels. So Farewell to the Flesh (1995) and Day of the Dead (1999) fell well short of the original but we share our thoughts on those as well. Bookending the episode are brief discussions of the character profile of Daniel Lutz, My Amityville Haunting and Neill Blomkamp's sophomore film Elysium. We received a last minute voicemail from a friend of the show calling in with a field report from Fantasia Film Festival that was just too good to exclude. Apologies for the blunt addition at the end of the episode but thanks so much for the awesome rundown of the many great genre offerings to look forward to.  EPISODE 311 - This Episode is Torture | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:02:51

It all started out innocently enough. A random encounter at a local bookstore led us to pulling out the mic and recording our conversation over coffee. The only problem was the subject of our impromptu chat just happened to be the bronze bull. Not familiar? Well, that explanation is precisely how we ended up spending an hour describing some of history's most atrocious means of inflicting punishment upon one another. The wiki description of torture is the act of deliberately inflicting severe physical pain to a person who is physically restrained or otherwise under the torturer's control. The practice has been sanctioned by authorities throughout history for reasons ranging from punishment and interrogation through to sadistic gratification. In the spirit of the horror genre's indulgences in the most gruesome and uncomfortable corners of human violence, we shed some light on several of the most horrendous examples of true human depravity. There is nothing pleasant or humourous about this week's subject but a look back at the ingenuity applied to harm our fellow man may hopefully help us realize how far we have progressed. We'll lighten the mood next week with a Candyman series retrospective.  EPISODE 310 - Conjuring up a Podcast | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:14:50

This episode is inspired by true events. A discussion about the recent theatrical winner The Conjuring ended up expanding into a very loose director's spotlight of James Wan. It was an interesting look back at the brief filmography of a director who has until now focused entirely on the horror genre and delivered some truly impressive successes. From the original Saw film which arguably impacted the direction of the horror genre in whole for a number of years through to his latest Amityville Horror inspired haunted house story we discuss the highs and lows of a very interesting career path. The massive hit that Saw became opened the doors for Wan to direct Dead Silence and Death Sentence. Very different films which both failed to perform at the box office. His recent (very) low budget possession flick Insidious again blew the doors off expectations resulting in another expanded budget opportunity The Conjuring which has cemented Wan's status. In looking back over films we have covered in the past, it allowed an opportunity to reconsider the issues and criticims levied to ultimately conclude that while the films are wholly unoriginal in terms of the basic storylines (yes, even Saw has a lot to owe to Seven), this filmmaker has a true visual eye and offers the genre fan earnest attempts to entertain with atmosphere and frights. Other miscellaneous topics include the recent discovery of the lost Wicker Man footage, thoughts on Pacific Rim, Superman vs Batman, and a quick The Wire update. Shlock corner returns to the How It Should Have Ended animated shorts, this time riffing on Man of Steel with an alternative climax to the movie. Please consider a book club submission as we approach to next convening of the Horroretc Book Club.
