 EPISODE 265 - Festival of Fear '12 Addendum | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:33:11

Once more into the fray... it's a bonus cast to wrap up Fan Expo and chat about some recent watches. We catch up with Doug to share some further misadventures of the weekend that was, including screenings and panels. We hear about Brawler, House at the End of the Drive, and reiterate the badness that was Land Shark. There is commentary on panels from Brandon Cronenberg (yep, Dave's kid) talking about Antiviral, Julie Benz, Rose McGowan and Tom Noonan. Things carry on from there with more bonus material such as an interesting, if frustrating, documentary Resurrect Dead: The Mystery of the Toynbee Tiles, a lengthy chat about Expendables 2 (including casting choices for part 3), and another documentary that brings the Paradise Lost trilogy to a close - the West Memphis three are free! We hope you enjoy the extra outing, more new content right around the corner As always we welcome your comments: horroretc@gmail.com Voicemail (206) 337-5324 WWW.HORRORETC.COM

 EPISODE 264 - Festival of Fear '12 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:07:11

Welcome to our 5th annual Festival of Fear convention show as we make the trek to Fan Expo 2012. This year's lineup was light on the horror genre content but we still found plenty to see and do. Once again we bring the sights and sounds of this massive con to you with coverage of Tony Todd (at his panel and at the bar), an odd Walking Dead panel (with a very interesting appearance by Norman Reedus), and the highlight of the weekend John Carpenter! Highlights include attending a live performance by longtime John Carpenter composer Alan Howarth, Anthony finding his way into a sneak peak screening of Doctor Who, Ted getting a new tattoo, sitting on the Iron Throne and of course the Horroretc meetup and pub crawl. So please hop in and join us for the virtual roadtrip and buckle up for the revelation of the weekend... Scully is a believer in the paranormal.  EPISODE 263 - Hellraiser Addendum | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 47:00

'Hellraiser fans... such fertile ground for planting the seeds of torment.' One more trip to the Hellraiser well. The retrospective just wouldn't be complete without getting Anthony's comments on the latter half of the franchise. Doug also joins in to share his perspective of the series as a whole. We had the best of intentions but the complaining may have gotten fired up once again in the course of things. It's only because of the great things we know the Hellraiser universe can deliver that we became so disappointed in the direction things went. So please join us for a shortened installment to wrap up the Hellraiser series as we take this week to recover from Fan Expo 2012 - lots to cover on that subject very soon. Before signing out we do manage to discuss a recent (and highly improbable) graphic novel discovery: Batman and Superman vs. Aliens and Predator!?  EPISODE 262 - Hellraiser Retrospective (part 3) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:05:07

You downloaded the podcast, we came. Now you must come with us, taste our pleasures. We conclude our Hellraiser franchise retrospective with a look at the post-canon sequels starting with Inferno and moving through Hellseeker, Deader, Hellworld and finally Revelations. It's a long and troubling road to travel but we tried our best to avoid falling into the potholes of complaining. A string of adapted screenplays led to what many consider to be an ultimately disapointing franchise but we must never lose sight of those elements that captivated us in the beginning. So it's a bit of a different wind up, particularly when we reach the ultimate insult to Hellraiser fans - Revelations. An obligation film shot to retain property rights and foisted on an unsuspecting audience in a blatant cash grab. Things may have gotten a bit heated there at the end but we do hope you join us for the ride. One thing is certain, there is an attraction to the further regions of experience the cenobites come from that will have us always hoping for a return to Leviathan. Huge thanks to special guests Tom and Doug Bradley! The Hellraiser retrospective may have come to and end but... no tears, please. It's a waste of good suffering.  EPISODE 261 - Hellraiser Retrospective (part 2) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:06:37

It's not hands that call us... it is desire. A few weeks back, we presented our commentary for Clive Barker's Hellraiser, the seminal 80's cult hit that spawned perhaps the most uneven of horror franchises. As promised, this week continues our retrospective examining all 8 sequels in the popular series. We are joined in this endeavour by guest host Tom, freelance writer for Scream Magazine and fan of all things Hellraiser. Courtesy of Tom, we also have extended audio from an interview that he conducted with Pinhead himself - Doug Bradley - offering some insights into the man and the part that made him famous. In part one of our journey towards Leviathan, we discuss the remaining theatrically released Hellraiser films (parts 2-4), and as always there is a surprise or two along the way. We hope that you enjoy our long gestating Hellraiser retrospective (an oft-requested subject from listeners), and look forward to hearing your thoughts on this series.  EPISODE 260 - From The Hip XX | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:16:04

This week we get caught up on some random stuff we've been watching in the past few weeks in advance of some upcoming franchise retrospectives and of course our annual convention excursion to Fan Expo. It's an eclectic mix of topics and titles including The Raid: Redemption, The Black Hole, The Aawakening, The Rite, Creature (1985), Some Guy Who Kills People, Hercules and the Haunted World, Hell, The Collapsed, The Punisher (2004) and many more. We've got Mario Bava, Klaus Kinski, Tucker and Dale, Dr Who, Hopkins and Hercules. There is astonishment that a remake of Who Can Kill a Child is nearly upon us, matched only by the disappointment in the remake versions of the action star (Colin Farrel vs Arnold Schwarzenegger). So grab yourself a slice of hot dog and bacon pizza and join us as we bounce around the map covering everything from a period piece ghost story to getting punched in the throat.  EPISODE 259 - Book Club 5 (part 2) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:57:08

Welcome to chapter 2 of our focus on genre literature. This week we bring in a special guest to join the discussion. Jonathan Oliver, editor in chief at Rebellion Press, shares his insights from a publisher's perspective including what elements of genre storytelling have proven most enduring, what a publisher is looking for in a new author, some suggestions on how to presevere for the struggling writer and of course favourite authors and titles. It was a very enlightening conversation and should be of interest to any who enjoy the genre in the written form or who may have aspirations to be published themselves. We carry on with our listener submissions which generated another great batch of suggestions including Night of the Living Trekkies, Robopocalypse, Handling the Undead, the Encyclopedia of Monsters, The Frankenstein Archive, and the works of Shirley Jackson, Clive Barker, William Hope Hodgson and much more. There are novels, collections, graphic novels and even an adaptation of a videogame to hear about and hunt down. Thanks again to everyone for making this our biggest Book Club yet and special thanks to Jonathan Oliver for joining in the fun. Remember the massive prize giveaway under way, send in your show topic suggestion for a chance to win. Send your novella submission to Abbadon Books for your chance to be published: http://www.abaddonbooks.com As always we welcome your comments: horroretc@gmail.com Voicemail (206) 337-5324 WWW.HORRORETC.COM

 EPISODE 258 - Book Club 5 (part 1) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:34:21

It's time once again to reconvene the Book Club to discuss a whole new roster of recommendations. The annual Book Club episode is a favorite of ours and thanks to all those who shared a bumper crop of contributions we have loads of suggestions to help fill up those summer reading lists. We will be joined by a special guest to talk genre literature next week allowing us to do our first two part Book Club episode. After sharing a few or our own recent reads (more on that next week), and providing an update to the e-reader discussion following Ted's recent conversion, we get to the listener picks. There is a wide variety of titles and authors to share including Jeff Strand, Stephen Irwin, Colton Whitehead, William Hope Hodgson, John W Campbell and Jonathan Mayberry. We not only have authors but novels, short story collections, genre compilations, even cartoonists and graphic novels. It's a bumper crop of material to seek out and enjoy on the beach, on the bus or in your favourite dark lamp lit reading corner. Many thanks to everyone who have helped us to deliver another instalment of the Book Club series and remember, contributions are welcome year round as we love to keep this tradition going.  EPISODE 257 - The Dark Knight Rises | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:34:29

If you make yourself more than just a man, if you devote yourself to an ideal... you become something else entirely. A legend! The conclusion to Christopher Nolan's epic Batman trilogy has arrived and with it an urgent need to gather together the horroretc crew to discuss it. The arrival of Batman Begins introduced a dark and mature approach to the superhero film grounded in reality and hailed as a triumphant return of the caped crusader on film following the disasterous downward plummet of the 90's series. It was followed by The Dark Knight, a crowning achievement and held by many as the peak of what the genre can aspire to, a complex and engaging crime thriller filled with excellent performances, which happened to feature characters dressed up in costumes. And now, The Dark Knight Rises. The episode is comprised of two separate recordings discussing in detail our reactions to the film with distinct spoiler sections identified as follows: 1 - 38:23 through 56:40 2 - 1:39:06 through 2:02:48 So we changed up the pace a little this week with plenty of Batman talk, but each segment also features out take on The Amazing Spiderman and thoughts on the Man of Steel teaser. There's a storm coming and we're bringing it straight to your ears. As always we welcome your comments: horroretc@gmail.com Voicemail (206) 337-5324 WWW.HORRORETC.COM

 EPISODE 256 - Hellraiser (1987) Commentary | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:37:44

"We have such sights to show you..." We kick off our Hellraiser franchise retrospective with a feature length audio commentary to the seminal 1987 Clive Barker classic film! Original, unsettling, and defying all categorization Hellraiser introduced many horror fans to the distorted imagination of Barker's self described 'celebration of perversity'. The film led to a string of sequels that formed a rather disjointed franchise but this week we focus solely on the original, discussing the effect and impact of the film, comparison to the short story upon which it was based Hellbound Heart, and generally enjoy a rewatch of one of our favorite horror movies. If you are new to Hellraiser, we highly recommend tracking down a copy for a genuine outside the box horror experience lacking any semblance of 80's kitsch, for those well familiar, please join us for a revisit of such iconic moments as the practical effect driven resurrection of Frank Cotton, the discovery of the sights and sounds unlocked by a mysterious puzzle box, and of course the unforgettable cenobites and the birth of a horror icon (aka Pinhead). More Hellraiser episodes will follow in the coming weeks but for now let's allow Clive Barker to tear our souls apart with a truly original work.  EPISODE 255 - Lucio Fulci | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:22:32

Bellissima! It's the Maestro versus the Master, of sorts... On this week's episode of the Horror Etc Podcast, Tony and guest-host Barry (in place of a vacationing Ted) take a look at the works of Lucio Fulci. From his start as a director of Italian comedies, to creator of some of the most astonishing horror imagery to pervade film and TV screens of the 70s and 80s, Lucio Fulci is now regarded as a pioneer of gore, and a legend in the genre that brings us all together each week. Also... It's a return (albeit a brief one) to Dario Argento, as Tony's education at the hands of Barry continues. In this instalment, a few Argento flicks are covered, including The Bird With the Crystal Plumage, and Dario's TWO nights out at the opera. Like any good Italian feast, it's a generous serving of horror Italiano-style on the show this week. We hope you enjoy - Buon Appetito!  EPISODE 254 - Feedback and Miscellany | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:36:06

It's summertime, and in true Horroretc tradition we are slacking off this week. With some great spotlight shows planned in the near future we took the opportunity to get a little more catching up done with some random topics, recent watches and of course... listener feedback. The subjects range from slasher films, Chuck Norris, shaky cam, the 80's video rental era, the need for modern innovations in horror and much more. There are several film recommendations including Hellraiser (a big announcement is dropped on that subject), Mutants (2009), Mask Maker (2010), Ninja Wars, Storage 24, Religulous and of course Prometheus. There's a wide range of tangents this week which only adds to the fun. Come for the genre talk, stay for the Sean Bean deaths (this week's schlock corner).  EPISODE 253 - From The Hip (lost in the woods edition) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:33:27

In June of 2012 two horror geeks disappeared in the woods near Kingston, Ontario, while recording a podcast... A year later their footage was found. okay, so maybe that's not true but we did get lost. This week we put together a true From the Hip edition of the show that started out as an on location recording on the waterfront and became a travelogue of the day's activities. With Tony back, we do some catching up covering a variety of subjects including recent watches of Phantom of the Paradise, Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter, Piranha 3DD, and... Prometheus. Things got a little spicy with that one. A variety of housekeeping topics are sprinkled in including the ongoing callout for Book Club submissions and a thank you for the response to graphic novel recommendations (we've got some thoughts on Batman: Knightfall and Kingdom Come). Tony's travel highlights, thoughts on the Amazon Kindle, Ted's moving violation story, a slasher inspired schlock corner, and a whole lot more keep the conversation going. We hope you enjoy this old school edition of the From the Hip format and consider watching some Hellraiser movies (just a suggestion).  EPISODE 252 - Conspiracy Theories | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:57:08

Grab your tin foil hats and find your way to the panic shelter, we are about to take on some of the world's greatest conspiracy theories and we don't want the men in black to show up and haul you away before we uncover the truth. It's a deviation from the norm this week as Ted is joined by a special guest host to chat about some of history's great conspiracy theories including: the assassination of JFK (which we dedicate the first 20 minutes to), what was behind the death of Princess Di, is Paul McCartney an imposter?, Who is Jack the Ripper, UFO's, Roswell, Abductions, the Bermuda Triangle, the mystery of Oak Island, David Kelly, Snuff Films, Montauk Point and the Philadelphia Experiment, the Electric Car, Chemtrails, the Moon Landing, mind control... all the way up to the New World Order, Bilderberg Group and the Illuminati (plus much more). You don't have to keep looking over your shoulder while listening but don't say you weren't warned. Along the way, some fun supernatural and cryptozoology is tossed in such as the belief in spirits, posession, bigfoot and sea monsters. And somehow the Mission Impossible films came up (the scientology agenda at work?).  EPISODE 251 - Game of Thrones (season 2) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:55:12

What is dead may never die. The second season of HBO's ground breaking adaptation of the Song of Ice and Fire series has come to a close and with it we have called together our panel from episode 202 (season 1) to discuss it. Book 2, titled A Clash of Kings, brought an array of new characters and locales while expanding the scope of the story begun in the first book/season. As we have come to expect, the show delivered intrigue, scheming, maneuvering, complex plot threads all set against the fantastically realized settings and locations of Westeros. And one more thing season 2 delivered (finally)... warfare! The second novel offered up action in the climactic battle of blackwater bay and HBO delivered on it very well. The approach to the episode was to discuss the events of the season in a very general way by way of spotlighting each of the main characters, all wrapped with commentary on the themes of the overall story. The book to show comparisons are weighted toward the first half hour of the episode before directing focus more to the show itself. Spoilers are withheld for future events but a warning goes out for season 2 - it's a very open discussion of everything that took place.
