Can I get you anything else? Mark: Oh, thanks, Sheila, I don't need anything right now. (slurp) I swear, there is nothing more important than coffee in Washington. Sheila: Nothing? Not even power or influence or money? Mark: Absolutely nothing. If there were no coffee in Washington, no one would get anything done! Sheila: Hmm, I don't really understand it. I can drink anything and be fine. Mark: You're young. You just haven't developed a lifelong dependency on caffeine yet. No coffee in this town would mean that half the people in this office couldn't get anything accomplished. Sheila: Sounds like a dangerous drug! I've seen everyone before their first cup—it's like talking with zombies. Mark: Oh, we are! Once you get hooked on this stuff, you can't operate without it. Sheila: Hmm... I suppose as bad habits go, it's not so bad, though. Mark: It's definitely better than smoking. --------------------------- Learn English with EnglishClass101! Could you point me in the right direction? Mark: Oh sure, no problem. To get to the restrooms, you have to go down the hallway to the left and take the escalator up to the third floor. They're the first door on the right. Sheila: Is that by the vending machines? Mark: No, you take a right out from the escalator and then go past the cafeteria on the right. The vending machines are to the left, so go the other way. Sheila: Ah, thanks, I think I understand now. Can I get you anything while I'm up there? Mark: Actually, that would be great. Can you pick up a coffee for me. (loud) Anyone else want a coffee? The intern's going on a run! (various voices pipe up). Okay, so that's four black coffees and one with cream and sugar. Sheila: Uhhh... Okay... Anything else? Mark: Oh yeah, a dozen doughnuts. Here's a couple of extra bucks so you can pick up something for yourself. Sheila: Heh, okay. Mark: Oh, and please don't forget to wash your hands. --------------------------- Learn English with EnglishClass101! Dave: It happened so fast. I was coming home from work late and walking back from the Metro station; all of a sudden someone jumped out and hit me. Isabel: Okay. What happened after that? Dave: Well, as I was falling down, he reached into my pocket and grabbed my wallet and my iPod. Then he ran off. Isabel: Did you see him clearly? Do you think you could identify him in a lineup? Dave: No, I was listening to music when he mugged me, and he got me from behind. As he was running away, I could just see his back; he was my height but a lot more muscular. Isabel: We've been getting a lot of reports lately about this kind of incident. Try and be more careful when you are walking at night. I would recommend not listening to music so you can stay aware. But we'll file your report; at least maybe we can get your wallet back. Usually criminals ditch them after they take the cash and cards. Dave: I'm just glad I wasn't injured myself. Isabel: Okay, sir, thank you for filing a report. Here's my card if you have any questions or remember anything else that might help out with the investigation. --------------------------- Learn English with EnglishClass101!  Advanced Audio Blog S2 #9 - Top 10 American Songs: Smells Like Teen Spirit | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3:15

Learn English with EnglishClass101! Don't forget to stop by EnglishClass101.com for more great English Language Learning Resources! -------Lesson Dialog------- ----Formal ---- Top 10 American Songs—"Smells Like Teen Spirit," Nirvana "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana is more than just a song. It was the precursor to the grunge rock movement, which took off big time when this song became a smash hit. Egged on by Generation X, who didn't care about pop or hair metal anymore, it single-handedly changed the atmosphere of the music industry. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" actually came about when lead singer/songwriter Kurt Cobain was attempting to write a pop song. He had been listening to a lot of The Pixies' music and was impressed by their style. Trying to compose a pop song, he came up with this rock classic that made him a superstar overnight. Nirvana was in the studio in 1991, working on their second album, Nevermind. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was written a few weeks prior to this recording. The band had sent a demo to their producer Butch Vig, who reportedly "didn't understand a word of it," but felt it had potential, and consequently let the band record it. Musically, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" uses the same verse-chorus-verse structure featured in most of Nirvana's songs. The lyrics are extremely hard to decipher when listening for the first time. Kurt Cobain sang this song in an unusual style, making the lyrics almost incomprehensible. This led to the song being parodied a number of times, and an infamous decision by MTV to have the lyrics running at the bottom of the screen whenever the video was aired. Cobain himself commented that he wanted to express the feelings of the youth and the generation he belonged to. Even if you know the lyrics, interpreting them is hard because of Cobain's unusual writing style. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was released in September 1991 to promote the band's album, Nevermind. The label and the band itself didn't expect "Smells Like Teen Spirit" to be a hit and were actually banking on the next single, "Come as You Are," to strike a chord. But what happened was the opposite. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" became a smash hit, reaching number 1 on the Billboard Hot Modern Rock Tracks and number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. --------------------------- Learn English with EnglishClass101! SHEILA: Yeah, it was, but on the other hand, it was a bit out of our price range, don't you think? DAVE: Sadly, yes. The other one we saw was affordable...but it's in kind of a run-down neighborhood! SHEILA: On the plus side, though, it was right next to the Metro. DAVE: That's true; it certainly has convenience going for it. It wouldn't take me more than fifteen minutes to get to work. SHEILA: Yeah, I hate commuting, and it would definitely cut down on my time too. DAVE: I'm just worried that a place like that might have lead pipes or bed bugs. Learn English with EnglishClass101! Don't forget to stop by EnglishClass101.com for more great English Language Learning Resources! -------Lesson Dialog------- ----Formal ---- Happy Halloween A few weeks ago, my two-year-old daughter borrowed several picture books about Halloween from our local library. After reading them and studying the illustrations, she was excited about trick-or-treating. "What do you want to dress up as?" I asked. She pointed. "I dress up as skeleton, Mommy," she said. We bought black pants and a black shirt at a thrift store for the base of her costume, and we bought sheets of white felt to make the bones, which we later drew, cut out, and glued on. Last night, she put on her outfit, complete with a black skullcap and black gloves. I dressed up as a witch in a floor-length, iridescent purple robe and a long, black and white wig. We went "trunk-or-treating" in the parking lot of her grandmother's church. About twenty members of the congregation had decorated their vehicles' trunks as anything from a graveyard, to a 196 0's dance club, to a fortuneteller's booth, to a princess's castle. My daughter's favorite trunk was her grandparents'. Ma Mére and Grandy dressed as pirates. Grandy wore a long, curly, black wig like Captain Hook, and Ma Mére had a red parrot perched on one shoulder. Their trunk was full of treasure. By the time she had visited all of the trunks, my daughter had a plastic jack-o-lantern full of candy and other treats. When we returned home, it was nearly my daughter's bedtime. My husband and I allowed her to pick one piece of candy to eat. She chose chocolate, of course. "It's time to put on your jammies," I said, but she wanted no part of that. Halloween had been so much fun that she wanted to wear her costume to bed. "Night-night Mommy witch," she said as I put her in her crib. "Night-night baby skeleton," I said. --------------------------- Learn English with EnglishClass101! Don't forget to stop by EnglishClass101.com for more great English Language Learning Resources!

I'll be working there all summer, and then I hope he offers me a job. Sheila: What a coincidence! I am going to be interning on the Hill too; I'm going to be working with a committee! Dave: That's great. Do you know where you are going to be living yet? I still have no idea. Sheila: I really want to live on Capitol Hill in Northeast. I looked at some townhouses there, but they're all so expensive. Dave: Yeah, I know what you mean. I'm going to be crashing with my uncle who lives in Georgetown until I find a place of my own. Sheila: I guess we're in the same boat! I'm going to be staying with a friend too. You know…I was going to be looking for a roommate up there. Maybe we could… Dave: I'm sold!
