 Advanced Audio Blog S3 #20 - Top 10 US Holidays: Labor Day | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:52

Learn English with EnglishClass101! Don't forget to stop by EnglishClass101.com for more great English Language Learning Resources! -------Lesson Dialog------- ----Formal ---- Top 10 US Holidays: Labor Day Labor Day is marked every year in the United States to honor the American worker. The day was originally all about the labor movement and is still meant to focus on everything American workers have done for their country through their continued dedication. The first Labor Day was celebrated in 1882 in Boston. It was held on September fifth, which coincided with International Workers' Day. Today Labor Day falls on the first Monday in September. The origin of the holiday is often debated among historians, but it is believed to have been started by the first major trade union in the country, which was New York's Central Labor Union. The holiday did not become a federal one until 1894, which was when the Pullman strike occurred. U.S. marshals and military members killed several workers during that strike. The creation of Labor Day came under the presidency of Grover Cleveland, who was focused on making peace with the labor movement in the country. Just six days after the Pullman strike ended, the bill making Labor Day a national holiday was passed. Before Labor Day became a federal holiday, several states passed laws creating the holiday. It started in Oregon in 1887 and then Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, and Colorado followed suit. By the time it became an official national holiday, more than half of the states already had laws on the state level making it an official holiday. Labor Day is generally celebrated in the United States with backyard barbecues, parades, family time, and most importantly, a day off for American workers. --------------------------- Learn English with EnglishClass101! They want me to show them around D.C. Dave: Sheila, the tour guide... I like it! Sheila: What should we do...? What should I show them? Dave: You have to go to the museums. The Smithsonian is superb. And I think no trip to D.C. is complete without a tour of the White House. Sheila: Definitely. And I think we have to go to all the presidential monuments... Lincoln, Jefferson, Washington... Dave: Don't forget the memorials for World War II and Vietnam. Sheila: Oh yeah, I forgot about them. What about the Pentagon? Dave: I don't think you have to go there...it's just a big office building. Sheila: Yeah, but my dad was in the Navy. I'm pretty sure we do have to. Dave: Fair enough. Also, the cherry blossoms by the Potomac are lovely. Sheila: That's true! And my mom said we have to take a stroll on the National Mall. Dave: It would be great to go on a dome tour in the rotunda, but that's difficult. --------------------------- Learn English with EnglishClass101! Learn English with EnglishClass101! Don't forget to stop by EnglishClass101.com for more great English Language Learning Resources! -------Lesson Dialog------- ----Formal ---- Dave: These cable-news talking heads rub me the wrong way sometimes! All they do is yell at each other; there is no actual debate. They are so unproductive and uninformative. Isabel: Yeah, I know what you mean. It seems like their only purpose is to see who can yell inside-the-Beltway jargon louder. Dave: I really wish there were a channel that actually fostered legitimate debate and discussion. I find this kind of media very unappealing. Isabel: I agree. The hosts and the commentators all seem so immature and irresponsible. Dave: Exactly, and they have the nerve to call their channel "Impartial and Even." Isabel: What a joke! Dave: More like "Partial and Uneven." Isabel: What about the channel that brands itself as "NNC = Politics?" Dave: Haha, more like "NNC = Terrible." Isabel: Well, at least C-SPAN is pretty fair. Dave: Yeah, if you can stay awake! It's so uninteresting sometimes. --------------------------- Learn English with EnglishClass101! Don't forget to stop by EnglishClass101.com for more great English Language Learning Resources!

Isabel: Not exactly... So where are you from? How long have you been in D.C.? Dave: I'm originally from Oregon; I have only been living in D.C. for a few months now. Before coming here, I had been living in Virginia when I went to school. Where did you go to college? Isabel: I'm a proud alumnus of the school of hard knocks! Dave: Oh, I see...sorry for asking. Isabel: Why? For all my life I had wanted to be a cop. No need to go to college for that, so I went to the academy instead. Dave: That's cool. So you have lived in D.C. your whole life? Isabel: Born and raised! Dave: A true Washingtonian. --------------------------- Learn English with EnglishClass101! Dave: Well, the host said that the majority of the justices felt that any gun control was a violation of the Second Amendment. Sheila: The second amendment states, "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
