June: Sure. But what is that? Cody: It's a teddy bear that I need to wrap for my girlfriend. June: Oh. Uh, supposing I'm not very good at wrapping things, what would you say? Cody: No worries. I'm not very good at it either. It's the thought that counts. June: That's what they say. Cody: I decided to give this to say "sorry" for forgetting that we were going to the movies last night. June: I know. She called me and was pretty upset. What were you doing that made you forget? Cody: Playing World of Warcraft. June: Ah! Yeah, I'd be pretty mad too. If I'd have been stood up by my boyfriend because of a video game, I'd have been pretty angry as well. Cody: If it hadn't been for that game, I wouldn't have forgotten. June: Okay. I'll help you. But let's do it on break. ... June: I think it turned out well. It's not the best wrapped present in the world, but it's good. She'll be happy you cared. Cody: I hope so, I know that she likes teddy bears. I hope she forgives me. If she hadn't helped me get the job, I wouldn't be working here now. --------------------------- Learn English with EnglishClass101! Don't forget to stop by EnglishClass101.com for more great English Language Learning Resources! -------Lesson Dialog------- ----Formal ---- Top 10 American Movies - Citizen Kane The movie "Citizen Kane" was an American dramatic film released in 1941. It was based on the life of Charles Foster Kane, an extremely wealthy media mogul. The movie begins by showing Kane dying in his bed. As he dies, he is shown holding a snow globe that falls from his hand as he whispers his last word, "Rosebud." Kane's death is national news, and reporter Jerry Thompson decides to find out about Kane's life and particularly about his last word. The reporter first interviews Susan Alexander, Kane's second wife, who refuses to tell him anything. He then reviews the archives of Walter Parks Thatcher, a deceased banker who was Kane's childhood guardian. Thatcher has left a written memoir of Kane's childhood. Thompson then interviews Kane's business manager, his friend, and his butler. Thompson's research reveals that Kane grew up in poverty until a large gold mine was discovered on his parents' property. His mother sent him away to live with Thatcher to be educated. When he turned twenty-five, he gained control over his inheritance and went into the newspaper business. Through manipulation and deceit, Kane becomes extremely rich and powerful. Over the years, Kane's marriage falls apart, and he begins an affair with Alexander. When the affair is discovered, both his marriage and his political career end. Kane marries Alexander, but eventually their marriage also comes to an end. Kane spends the rest of his life tending to his businesses and interacting only with his servants. The butler recounts that Kane had said "Rosebud" after Susan left him and right after seeing a snow globe. At the end of the film, it is revealed that "Rosebud" was the name of the sled from Kane's childhood. It was his memory of the only time in his life when he was truly happy. --------------------------- Learn English with EnglishClass101! I have an appointment with a big-ticket customer in about ten minutes. Big John: That's right. Well done, June. That's the kind of initiative we need here at this store. June: I've actually learned quite a bit during this meeting and was wondering whether we could review the tasks and projects that have been assigned. Big John: Well, we've been talking about the store's problems for about forty minutes now. June: I know, but I'm having trouble distinguishing between what I'm supposed to do and what the other departments should be doing. Big John: What do you mean? June: It's just that in my department, we are really focused on sales and, while we've spoken quite a bit about the problems we're having as a store, I'm having trouble identifying exactly what I should implement in my department so that I can increase sales. Big John: Haven't you been listening for the past forty minutes? June: Yes I have been listening, sir. In fact, I think the solution proposed by Cody is excellent. I just wanted to be clear that we are going to implement his plan. Big John: No one has agreed on any plan of action yet. June: Okay. I just needed to be sure I was on the same page as everybody else. --------------------------- Learn English with EnglishClass101! Learn English with EnglishClass101! Don't forget to stop by EnglishClass101.com for more great English Language Learning Resources! -------Lesson Dialog------- ----Formal ---- Top 10 US Holidays—Memorial Day Memorial Day is about remembering troops who have died while serving in the military for the United States. It falls in May on the final Monday of the month. There have been indications of remembrance ceremonies since at least the nineteenth century, although there are many stories of how the holiday started. Over twenty different cities lay claim to starting the holiday, although in 1966 Waterloo, New York was officially recognized as the city to start Memorial Day. The history of Memorial Day can actually be traced to Decoration Day, which was declared in 1865 by several freed slaves. That holiday began by honoring Union soldiers who had been killed in the Civil War. New York was the first state that recognized Memorial Day as an official holiday in 1873, although General John Logan made the very first declaration of the holiday on May 30, 1968 at Arlington National Cemetery. On that day, the aim of the holiday was to honor members of the military who were killed during the Civil War. Of course, this did create objections from those in the South, who honored their dead on a different day until the end of World War I, which was when this day of remembrance became about honoring military members who were killed in all wars rather than just the Civil War. Today celebrations for Memorial Day are marked with shopping and traditional ceremonies at cemeteries where soldiers who were killed in combat are buried. Most Americans relax and enjoy a day off while celebrating with friends and family at outdoor barbecues. The Indianapolis 500, a race held in Indiana, has been held the day before Memorial Day since 1911. --------------------------- Learn English with EnglishClass101! Cody: Only when the horses're sick. June: Really? Cody: No. June: Oh! So, how did you get to school? Cody: I lived next to the bus stop, so I just walked to the park and took the big yellow school bus, just like everybody else. Why'd you want to know? June: It's just that I'm from New York and the image we have of the Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana region is that of farm country. Cody: Well, there're a lot of farms and ranches around there, but I grew up in a city, just like you. Albeit, a smaller city. June: How many inhabitants? Cody: About sixty thousand. June: Yeah, just a bit. --------------------------- Learn English with EnglishClass101! Don't forget to stop by EnglishClass101.com for more great English Language Learning Resources!

Learn English with EnglishClass101! Don't forget to stop by EnglishClass101.com for more great English Language Learning Resources! -------Lesson Dialog------- ----Formal ---- Top 10 American Songs–"Born in the USA," Bruce Springsteen "Born in the USA" is one of Bruce Springsteen's most popular songs and often claimed to be his signature track alongside "Born to Run." It was released in 1984 on the album of the same name. The music and lyrics are by Bruce Springsteen, and it was produced by Springsteen, Jon Landau, Chuck Plotnik, and Steve Van Zandt. Springsteen's backing band, the E Street Band, featured on this song. Musically, "Born in the USA" is an arena rock number. Heavy drum beats kick off the song, setting its tempo, and continue throughout. It is accompanied by loud guitars and synthesizers, with all of these providing a base for Springsteen's angry vocals. Lyrically, "Born in the USA" was inspired by Springsteen's friends who had served in the Vietnam War. It tells the story of a soldier returning from war and struggling to adjust. The lyrics are accentuated by Springsteen's loud and angry vocals on this song. Because of its title, "Born in the USA" is often misinterpreted to be a patriotic anthem. However, the lyrics are anti-war and discuss the effects of the Vietnam War on America. Upon its release, "Born in the USA" generated some controversy in political circles because of its opposition to the Vietnam War. Then presidential candidate, Ronald Reagan, even mentioned Bruce Springsteen during his stump speech. Even though "Born in the USA" was relevant to that time, it has managed to maintain its popularity over the years and remains a rock radio staple. Springsteen fans also regard this as one of his best songs. A music video featuring Springsteen and the E Street Band was made for the song, but it was marred by poor AV synchronization. "Born in the USA" reached number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 5 on the UK Singles Chart, certifying its status as a hit single. --------------------------- Learn English with EnglishClass101! Cody: Big John wanted us to inventory the entire store. June: The entire store? What did we do to deserve that? Cody: Apparently, corporate changed the inventory system about two years ago, but for some reason, our store never put the new system in place. June: So now, we need to make up for two years of slacking in two days? Cody: Something like that. --------------------------- Learn English with EnglishClass101!
