De meeste Nederlandse kinderen krijgen het grootste deel van hun cadeautjes op 5 december, en dat is Sinterklaasavond. Het verhaal gaat dat Sint Nicolaas (Sinterklaas) en zijn helper, Zwarte Piet, rondkijken in alle scholen in alle plaatsen om te zien of de kinderen zich goed gedragen. Op Sinterklaasavond, krijgen de goede kinderen geschenken, terwijl de stoute kinderen achtervolgd rond door Zwarte Piet, die met een stok naar hen zwaait. Om hun geschenken te ontvangen, zetten de kinderen hun klompen uit, en die vult Sint Nicolaas dan met lekkers en cadeautjes. Als de kinderen wortelen en hooi in hun schoenen achterlaten voor het paard van Sint-Nicolaas, rekenen ze erop dat hij ook snoep en andere zoete lekkernijen voor hen achterlaat. Net als met Kerstmis in de Verenigde Staten, worden op Sinterklaasavond de geschenken mooi omwikkeld met papier. Sommige mensen ervoor kiezen om ze ergens te verbergen.De geschenken komen meestal met een label dat een rijmpje bevat over de ontvanger van de gift en gaat over een van zijn of haar tekortkomingen. Het accent op deze feestdag ligt op het verrassen van vrienden en familie in plaats van gewoon maar geschenken te geven aan elkaar. Op Sinterklaasavond, komen families samen voor feestjes en het uitwisseling van geschenken. Kinderen zingen liedjes en wachten angstig op het verschijnen van Sinterklaas. Er wordt ook volop gefeest en warme chocolademelk gedronken om het leven van de echte Sint Nicolaas te vieren, die bekend stond voor het geven van geschenken aan kinderen. ----Formal English---- St. Nicholas Eve in the Netherlands St. Nicholas Eve is the night before Sinterklaas, which is December 6. Most Dutch children receive most of their presents on December 5th, which is St. Nicholas Eve. The story goes that St. Nicholas and his helper, Zwarte Piet, go around watching schools in all types of places to see if children are being good. On St. Nicholas Eve, good children receive gifts, while bad children are supposedly chased around by Zwarte Piet, who wields a stick after them. In order to receive their gifts, children put their wooden shoes out, and St. Nicholas is said to fill them up with goodies and gifts. If the children leave carrots and hay in their shoes for St. Nicholas' horse, they also believe that he will leave them candy and other sweet treats. Like at Christmas in the United States, St. Nicholas Eve gifts are wrapped with paper. Sometimes people choose to hide them somewhere. The gifts usually come with a tag that has a rhyme about the gift's recipient and one of his or her shortcomings. The focus during this holiday is for friends and family to surprise each other rather than simply just to give gifts to each other. On St. Nicholas Eve, families gather for parties and exchange gifts. Children sing songs and wait anxiously for St. Nick to appear. There is also typically plenty of feasting, and drinking of hot chocolate in celebration of the life of the real St. Nicholas, who was known for giving gifts to children. --------------------------- Learn Dutch with DutchPod101! Paul Verhoeven regisseerde deze film in 1973, met Monique van de Ven en Rutger Hauer in de hoofdrollen. De film begint met Eric, een beeldhouwer, die ontwaakt uit een droom. Hij is verstoord en het duurt niet lang voordat we ontdekken dat hij zojuist met Olga heeft gebroken. Eric ontmoette Olga tijdens het liften. De twee gingen samenleven en trouwden uiteindelijk, hoewel Olga's moeder tegen het huwelijk was, omdat ze vond dat Eric geen goede match voor Olga was, omdat hij uit een lagere sociale klasse kwam. He is disturbed and it doesn't take long before we discover that he has just broken up with Olga. Eric met Olga while he was hitchhiking. The two ended up living together and eventually marrying, although Olga's mother is opposed to the marriage because she feels that Eric is not a good match for Olga because he is lower class. As the relationship between Eric and Olga takes its course, she begins to act stranger and stranger. They end up fighting and Olga leaves Eric after he slaps her. Eric tears his studio apart and destroys every reminder of Olga he sees. When the flashback ends, Eric continues seeing Olga from time to time, and she keeps acting strangely. Her family won't let Eric see her until he goes back to set up a divorce. After the divorce, Olga ends up marrying a businessman from America, but that relationship doesn't last either so she returns to her homeland. Eric runs into Olga one more time at the end of the movie, and she is still acting strangely. She falls down and he takes her to the hospital. At this point we learn that she has a brain tumor, but it is too late to save her life. Eric loves her to the end of her life, when he brings her Turkish delight, which is the only kind of food that she is willing to eat.
