Kunstkenners weten dat hij meestal geen schetsen neerzette op zijn doeken, voordat hij begon te schilderen, maar ze zien wel hoe hij zorgvuldig in lagen werkte. Zijn nauwgezette manier van verf op het doek neer te zetten was anders dan alle andere schilders van zijn tijd. Hals werd in Antwerpen geboren in 1580 of 1581, en een van zijn vroegste betaalde banen was als kunstrestaurateur. Hij wilde zelf pas gaan schilderen toen hij was meer dan dertig was, en een paar jaar later, in 1616, maakte hij zijn eerste groepsportret, een stijl waar hij bekend om staat. Het banket van de officieren van de St. George compagnie is een enorm levensgroot portret van een grote groep. Hals werd later bekend om zijn portretten van grote groepen, hoewel zijn meest bekende portret waarschijnlijk dat van René Descartes is. Hals schilderde ook portretten van veel rijke inwoners van Amsterdam. Hij streefde altijd naar realisme met een vleugje vrijheid in zijn penseelstreken. Vandaag zijn de schilderijen van Hals te zien in musea over de hele wereld, onder andere het New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, het Louvre, en het Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerpen. Hals is niet gekend voor landschapsschilderijen, en dit is niet ongebruikelijk want de Nederlandse schilders in de Gouden Eeuw waren meestal gespecialiseerd in een bepaald aspect van de schilderkunst. Tussen 140 en 250 schilderijen worden aan Hals toegeschreven, afhankelijk van de kunsthistoricus waaraan je het vraagt. ----Formal English---- Frans Hals Dutch painter Frans Hals lived during the Dutch Golden Age and is most known for his distinctive brushwork. Art experts know that he usually didn't put down any underdrawings on his canvases before he started painting, but they do note how he worked carefully in layers. His meticulous way of attaching paint to the canvas was unlike any other painter of his day. Hals was born in Antwerp in 1580 or 1581, and one of his earliest paying jobs was as an art restorer. He didn't start painting on his own until he was in his 30s, and just a few years later, in 1616, he did his first group portrait, a style he became known for. The Banquet of the Officers of the St. George Militia Company is an enormous life size portrait of a large group. Hals was known later for his portraits of large groups, although one of the portraits he is probably best known for is his painting of Rene Descartes. Hals also painted portraits of many wealthy residents of Amsterdam. He always aimed for realism with a touch of freedom to the strokes. Today the paintings of Hals can be seen in museums all over the world, including the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Louvre, and the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp. Hals has never been credited with any landscape paintings, and this is not unusual because Dutch painters during the Golden Age usually specialized in one time of painting.
