 Advanced Audio Blog #15 - German Americans | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 5:22

Learn German with GermanPod101! Don't forget to stop by GermanPod101.com for more great German Language Learning Resources! ----Formal English---- Ever since Europeans discovered North America in the 16th century, many of them emigrated into the New World, in order to begin a new life there. There were a lot of Germans among the many European emigrants, which led to the American culture having many kinds of German influences and colorations. According to an estimate, more than 50 million US-Americans have German ancestors. German roots are visible in names of a variety of American foods - for instance frankfurter, hamburger, pretzels and strudel are known to be German words. Names of cities entered the country along with the emigrants - Hamburg in New York, New Berlin in Illinois, Dresden in Ohio are only a few examples. In the years between 1848 and the First World War there was the biggest wave of German emigrants to America. During the time of the First World War many Germans assimilated, in order not to appear to be sympathizers with the German enemies. German classes were prohibited and German food and names were ling [...]
