Buttarchive: Beats, Jazz, & Soul #54 - Hug You Squeeze You | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 4497

"That's the break. This music is the intermission. When you tired of standing up all night dancing and sweating and hollering and screaming and stomping your feet. And it's time that your woman say - well baby I want to just sit down with you and talk with you. That's where Barry White comes in. And it's a slot that's fitted in every young teenager, young adult, middle aged adult, the one's that dance and don't dance. Everybody takes time out for this kind of music somewhere on their playlist at home. They have to! The human mind can only stand so much of that go go go go go music. And when you got to settle it down...the lyric and the melody is still flowing easy... ...it starts out with a concert concept, it's beautiful strings and setting you up for this thing. It's not just a lot of screaming and loud guitars blazing everywhere." - Barry White (his quote can be heard at 48:19 on this http://djqoolmarvsounds.podomatic.com/player/web/2009-08-20T18_32_24-07_00 This mix was created in 2000 for Valentine's night at an L.E.S.N.Y.C. venue called SX137.  Jazzy Vibes of Latin America - A Qool DJ Marv Live Set of Latin Jazz, Salsa, Cuban & more | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 12094

Latin Jazz and Salsa music recorded in September 2010 in a Manhattan loft space for a company's end of summer soiree...I mean, fiesta! Mostly unmixed because many of these songs end cold (meaning that they don't fade out). If you play good songs, and they end cold, let them be. When they finish, you'll find that you can continue on with a similar vibe, or you can change tempo, or you can change music altogether...letting a song end is actually one of the more thoughtful and satisfactory segues. Clocking in at 3 hours, you can feel tropical, practice your salsa dance, or just plain enjoy the virtuosity of these musicians. I love the bright horns and the endless percussion that fills every crevice in the sound. And Latin music also, in my humble opinion, has the most warm bass sound in recorded music. Cuban, Colombian, Puerto Rican, Brazilian, Dominican sounds and more. (Feel free to comment if I miss any culture) 1. Eddie Palmieri - Slowvisor 2. Paul Desmond - Samba D'Orpheu 3. Poncho Sanchez - Bien Sabroso 4. Antonio Carlos Jobim - Tide 5. Tito Puente - Ode To Cachao 6. The Spanish Harlem Orchestra - En El Tiempo Del Palladium 7. Jesús Alemañy's ¡Cubanismo! - Homanaje A Arcano 8. Luiz Bonfa - So Danco Samba 9. Gilberto Gil & Caetano Veloso - Baião Atemporal 10. Lalo Schifrin & Bob Brookmeyer - Samba Para Dos 11.  What Happens When Miles Davis and John Coltrane Step to the Stage at a Thelonious Monk Performance? Qool DJ Marv Mixes Jazz | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2265

What Happens When Miles Davis and John Coltrane Step to the Stage at a Thelonious Monk Performance? That's the question I posed while listening to a set of Jazz CDs sent to me by the people behind http://www.yourfriendorfoe.com/. Originally conceived to be a stream/download on the Friend or Foe website, this 37 minute mix, designed to feel like an actual live Jazz club performance, is now available here for you to add to your collection. 10/10/10 is what I would give each one of these Jazz giants on that mythical scale. October 10th is also Thelonious Monk's birthday. My son's name is Thelonious and that's him in the photo practicing piano (on a synthesizer - look at the photo frame on his left to see the concentration in his eyes). His lessons are on a real piano. Need I say more? Just a little...I wrote a great story about this mix for their site but when the site changed, away it went and so did my words. I found a few on the music blog of a NYC man about town & here's a copy & paste: “I hope this jazz mix is regarded as an offering of something that could possibly be an introduction to a different approach to musical creativity where instrument virtuosity, versatility, imagination, dexterity, improvisation and communication are the essential components.” 01 Thelonious Monk – “Straight No Chaser” (from Thelonious Monk In Italy) 02 Miles Davis – “Blues By Five” – (from Cookin’ with The Miles Davis Quintet) 03 Thelonious Monk – “Just You Just Me” (from The Unique) 04 Thelonious Monk – “Honeysuckle Rose” (from The Unique) 05 John Coltrane – “Straight Street” (from Coltrane) 06 Miles Davis – “I’ll Remember April” (from Blue Haze) 07 Thelonious Monk – “Liza (All The Clouds’ll Roll Away)” (from The Unique) Thanks D http://www.treesforbreakfast.com/2008/05/qooldjmarv-your-friend-or-foe-jam-session-podcast-1/ https://www.facebook.com/QoolMarv

 Buttarchive: Beats, Jazz, & Soul #65 - Rare & Precious Gems | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 4803

A 100% vinyl mix from early 2000s featuring rare (but modern) records that are precious to me. Nowadays I use everything, vinyl, CDs, mp3s...this is a throwback to the days where I would put 15-20 records in front of me, choose the 1st and the last and then fill in the space between the bookends with songs that conveyed my philosophy. This isn't music as accessory to drunken tomfoolery, this is music that accentuates and represents my mind, aims, influences, and lifestyle. A bygone era where I left my home and went to record shops and got my fingers dirty flipping through 100s of vinyls to find these Rare & Precious Gems...more & more a thing of the past...more & more, my collection of vinyls shine like jewels to me. I guess I'm weird, and in good shape because it doesn't bother me to still carry vinyls to gigs...even the ones that I fly to. Every Friday in New York City I play at a place called Bar 6 - my set there is much lighter than this mix...soul, disco, 80s, house, 90s hip hop - and do you know that I put two bags of vinyls on a compact hand truck, walk 7 blocks to the subway, pick up those two bags, approx 80-100 pounds, carry them down the steps...ride train to the village...carry them up two flights of stairs from the 14th street platform to the street and walk two more blocks to Bar 6? It's oddly satisfying. (side note - on one of these subway rides I saw I guy get on with a stand up bass and I thought, yeah, what I'm doing is not all that strenuous...a stand up bass on a subway, that's effort!) The irony of the moment is that the musician looked at the dj and his records like the dj and his records, now, looks at the virtual dj with their laptops. Irreplaceable replaced. No track list but here are some of the artists: Minnie Ripperton 4 Hero U.N.K.L.E. Massive Attack Joi Carl Craig Assata Shakur Amalgamation of Soundz Kudu Portishead David Holmes & more Catch me at Bar 6 sometime, might be my last go round in NYC as a regular DJ gig. I'm passing the baton to the next wave and taking my skills into the world of special events where I've become a specialist DJ. Bar 6 - http://www.barsixny.com/ - Fridays 10:30pm-2am Specialist? Stuff like this (scroll down to HBO) - http://www.variety.com/index.asp?layout=Emmy&articleid=VR1118022575&categoryid

Re-Experience The Experience from The Bold and The Brave. All of the selections play at their original tempos, the Bold & the Brave have twisted them up to create some spaced out altered versions. Working with the parts and imagining Jimi's sonic sensibilities, we present a version of our dream concert. Boldly Loving Fire House Red Bruised Purple Wildcat Station Joeseph, C'mon Man Vixen Music Sweet Music Hazy Daze Towering Inferno Surround Sound of Breeze Angels Fly This Way Where You Go When You Go? ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... .....
