 Flight of The Conchords 2nd Season Premiere Party - L.E.S. N.Y.C. - Jan 26 2009 - Qool DJ Marv LIVE! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 8179

Flight of The Conchords 2nd Season Premiere Party - L.E.S. N.Y.C. - Jan 26 2009 - Qool DJ Marv LIVE! If you were at this party and you had heard me play before, I imagine that you would've looked up at the booth and you would've had a moment of bewilderment because you'd never heard me play music like this. You haven't, I've never really done an extended set combining rock - modern and classic, new wave, electro, drum and bass, odd, and some 80’s. A debut for you. If you've been along for the ride, then you know that I'm all about the tapestry of the vibe and feeling of an evening, regardless of the genres of music that are the focus. If you are a fan of the Conchords then you know that they have fun with music so the vibe of this set is playful with a nice bounce and steady groove featuring mostly male vocalists, guitar and synthesizers mixed for a casual crowd at the Flight of the Conchords premier party at the Angel Orensanz Foundation on January 26 2009. I got word from the gents that they'd like to have some Psychedelic Furs, some Cars, David Bowie, Blondie, Talking Heads, Non Non Plus, & the Cure, and some blue eyed soul like Hall & Oates. I obliged and I invite you to go along for the ride and listen for their preferences and how I drop them in the mix. And every one was a winner when it hit. When you get to the Common song and you hear him flow, "No pop no pop no pop, no pop." those lyrics were an acknowledgment that I understood when they also asked me to steer away from the current mainstream. All good, I'm a fan of music and I love every opportunity to bring it all together. And get turned on to the best of music that I'm not fluent in. A win win situation and I hope you dig the set from one of those people didn't leave until the music stopped kind of parties. Lots more on the fellows right here: http://www.hbo.com/conchords/ Hit me with a comment if you really want to know the tracklisting.

 Live @ HBO's Emmy Award Afterparty - Hollywood, CA - Sept 21, 2008 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 10419

Going back to '04, the great people at HBO thought that I could be a nice addition to their post-Emmy Award telecast celebration. Although I had no idea how my style and set would go down in an atmosphere that I've never been a part of, I did what came naturally and mixed good music that anyone would enjoy. I'd been cautioned not to worry if I couldn't get the well heeled entertainers and executives to hoof it on the dance floor because, for the most part, there's a lot of congratulatory conversation happening. They did get on the floor and before the party ended actors, actresses, CEOs, movie deal makers, models were applauding and whistling for more despite the presence of the L.A. Fire Department who were there at the end to make sure that things wound down when they were scheduled to. Since that 1st time out in 2004, the parties have become thematic. I enjoy the opportunity to come up with what can be considered as the 1st half of the party where the music reflects the inspired design. Since '04, the Bollywood vibes of India, 60's St. Tropez, and traditional Thailand have been themes, this year South America, highlighting Brazil and Argentina was the flavor. That's where having an open mind and an eclectic anything's possible ear comes in handy. Less than 10 days before this party, I was sent about 15 CDs that were purchased by the party's designer during his tours of South America, and asked to build my opening set based on the music of the likes of Maria Bethania & Jorge Ben. With 200 songs to absorb and my own records to consider, I began the process of cramming - you know like studying for that exam that you must pass - filling my head with suitable songs, working out when they should be played and what they could be mixed with. The dynamic that I must consider is that the party begins primarily with arrivals and a lot of mingling ensues...then it begins to reach capacity thus there's a need to shift the energy upwards into a groove that is infectious inviting but not yet overpowers...then there's the bit where they've heard the theme for more than an hour, and the task is keeping folks grooving and interested until my counterpart Ravi, the man with 2 dozen drums, steps onto the stage with me to set it off into dance floor madness. So here you are. Another close your eyes and imagine you were there set for you. A set that I've never done really but I hope that it's competent and that you enjoy it. One last detail I thought you might like and this detail somewhat explains the photo - I made up this whole set on the fly...meaning, I only knew what my 1st song was going to be which is "So Many Stars" by Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66, they rest was improvised based on the best selections out of the pool of 15 discs that I'd been sent and the best of the vinyls that I took to round out my musical possibilities. No paint by numbers, no track one then track two as it's laid out in my computer playlist...just plain & pure intuition and mixing skills my friend, on the spot with the lights bright and hot. In that photo - I was calming myself to the view of downtown L.A. (Hollywood's hills are to the left) because my mind was going wild with possibilities, scenarios, and blends. It's a big party and I needed to put by best foot forward but I get butterflies and mini-panic attacks because I felt like I left a crucial record at home or I have some vision of a record skipping. Breathe & let it breathe while taking in the breathtaking - and all will be just fine. Enjoy and share, please. Check out the details of the event production here (you can see me on the left side of the 1st photo - on stage and overlooking it all): http://www.bizbash.com/losangeles/content/editorial/e12691.php Check out some great photos here: http://www.zimbio.com/pictures/6Oq3muQkX7Q/Belvedere+At+HBO+EMMY+Party/0ef_YbX17_n http://www1.wireimage.com/GalleryListing.asp?navtyp=gls====335186&nbc1=1#

Argyle Culture - A promotional mix made especially for Russell Simmons distributed at the 2007 Magic Convention in Las Vegas | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 4754

Thousands of these CDs were distributed for free during the '07 Magic Convention, a convention where any and every clothing line showcases their new fashions and apparel. This is a sight to see, especially on the 'urban' side of things. I was there to DJ a few Phat Farm events and this mix was a bonus, for me and for Mr. Simmons & co. I was excited to get the call to compile and produce a promotional mix CD that musically announced the "Arrival" of Argyle Culture, an evolution of his Hip Hop inspired clothing line Phat Farm into more of a gentleman's style - a gentleman that grew up urban but is now holding maybe a couple higher education degrees and a nice gig, and the sagging jean & 10x too big t-shirt or athletic jersey look has been outgrown. Let your opinions be what they may about Mr. Simmons, I appreciate the man, especially his approving of this mix. After swimming against the current for so long, musically, to get asked to do this kind of mix for a contemporary 'urban' fashion line is unusual, gratifying, and in away, my own Arrival into the consciousness of the ghetto fabulous. I had complete creative freedom in terms of selecting and sequencing the songs on the Arrival. Press play and listen to what turned out to be a classic and garnered the 1st direct "Thank you" from Russell after doing a few of his events over the course of this decade. That felt good. Qool DJ Marv presents The Arrival 1. Reginald R. Robinson – Lift Every Voice And Sing 2. Zero 7 – Your Place 3. Jazzanova – Sirens 4. M.F.S.B. – Something For Nothing 5. Pharoahe Monch – So Good 6. Visioneers – Dirty Old Bossa Nova 7. Mary J. Blige – Beautiful Day 8. Young-Holt Unlimited – Listen Here 9. Lemongrass – Fritz The Cat 10. Jamie Cullum – Frontin 11. Natalie Williams – Does It Feel Good 12. Paris Angeles – Circus 13. OutKast – Funkin’ Around 14. Chic – So Fine 15. Roy Ayers – Can’t You See Me 16. Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes – Don’t Leave Me This Way https://www.facebook.com/QoolMarv

Mr. Brown: "I don't want nobody to give me nothing. Open up the door. I'll get it myself." | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 4677

Lyrics from the song that's the title of this mix. Recorded in 1969 - the year when, I, Marvin James was born. After you check out what is just a little bit of his lyrical offerings over the years – please feel free to download a medley of James Brown songs that I mixed live in 2004 in Brooklyn at a celebration of his music and influence. Special thanks to Brooklyn stalwart Dante for arranging this great night that highlighted the sounds of James Brown. I’m so glad that he offers so much. I stand and walk tall and with pride because of his words, wisdom and experiences. James knew that folks were listening and paying attention and not only excited you to move and groove, he also encouraged perseverance, determination, courage, nobility & togetherness. I heard that. And still do. Play it loud! “I don’t want nobody to give me nothing. Open up the door. I’ll get it myself. Don’t give me integration, give me true communication. Don’t give me sorrow, I want equal opportunity to live tomorrow. Give me schools and give me better books, So I can read about myself and gain my truer looks. I don’t want nobody to give me nothing. Open up the door. I’ll get it myself. We got talents we can use on our side of town. Let’s get our heads together And build it up from the ground.” Photo courtesy of my brother G-Man who attended the Harlem viewing when James transitioned.

The Creative Factory (A Moscow Based Advertising Agency) Special Edition Mix CD | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 4784

In 2007, CEO of this Moscow, Russia based ad agency reached out to me and invited me to come play at their Sixth Anniversary Celebration. This was definitely my first international "corporate" party, although there was not the slightest hint of a corporate vibe. This was a fun party where the staff and leadership of The Creative Factory all had a ball. How'd I get that gig? I'd been to Moscow before, in fact doing the Creative Factory Party marked my 3rd trip to Moscow, but it was on my 1st trip that the boss at TCF heard me spinning my variations at a venue called Crisis of Genre - a gig hooked up by Moscow's low profile but influential man about town Alex N. Two years later, the impression made on Mr. TCF was still vibrant and he extended the invitation to play the party and asked if I'd do a CD that would be one of the keepsakes that marked 6 years of doing business in Moscow - which apparently, is not easy. Of course I was up for the trip back to Moscow and for compiling and mixing a CD. Here's the CD, clearly, you would've had to have been there to receive one.
