 Buttarchive: Beats, Jazz, & Soul #22 - London Soul Classics | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 5620

Welcome to the alternate universe that was in my ears in the late 80s/early 90s. The 22nd edition of my Beats, Jazz, & Soul mixtapes was a nod to the influence of the sounds that I found in the import bins while record shopping early on in my DJ career. Artists like Soul II Soul, Jamiroquai, Brand New Heavies, Sweetback (a band consisting of members of Sade's musicians/producers), and Loose Ends showed me that the jazzy soul groove sound, I thought, at the time, exclusive to black america went way beyond barriers of color and nationality. When I called this London Soul Classics, it was because when I made this, these kinds of songs were not that well received in a U.S. mainstream club environment, but were the jams in the 'underground' scenes...parties thrown by Giant Step in NYC or King Britt & friends in Philly, which usually had internationals in the audience. I'd heard, seen, read that people would dance to these kinds of songs in clubs in the UK that were as large as mainstream clubs in the U.S. - giving me hope that this music wasn't just for head nodding to in headphones or home listening, but for dancing as well. I learned that it took really free spirits to be able to let go to these kinds of sounds and those spirits are the spirits that I love and play to. In a way, this tape was positive and wishful thinking that someone from overseas would hear that I understood worldwide groove and extend an invitation to me to play there. The simple dreams of a DJ trying to make a mark. As you see in the photo, like the Brand New Heavies song Dream Come True http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HH5lEIhjOHY&feature=fvw - that dream DID come true. That's me on a curb and on a poster in London. Omar - Music For The Pipe Peter Brown - For Your Love Sweetback feat. Amel Larrieux - You Will Rise Sade - Keep Looking Sade - Siempre Hay Esperanza Loose Ends - A Little Spice The Brand New Heavies - Never Stop Soul II Soul - Back To Life Soul II Soul - Jazzy's Groove Deee-lite - Deee-lite Theme Him - BaDoPa Family Stand - You Don't Have To Worry Him - Starfruit & Green Tea Jamiroquai - When You Gonna Learn Soul II Soul - Dream's A Dream (A Night At The Opera) Loose Ends - Slow Down Soul II Soul - Fairplay Terence Trent Darby - Wishing Well Diana Brown & Barry K Sharpe - Masterplan D-Influence - Good Life D-Influence - Good Lover The Chimes - Heaven Jamiroquai - Space Cowboy Omar - Fallin

The Wire - The HBO Series 4th Season Premiere Party '08 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 4798

With a party that's much more sophisticated than the scenes depicted in the show, this season's party started with a nod to the grown folks in the cast. Later there were sounds for the new youthful cast members that Season 4 focused on. One of my strategies when playing is to get everyone in the room involved by touching them musically. Some think, reasonably so, that the older generation is irrelevant in a party scene...play that new stuff and the geezers just gotta deal (or are invisible). It's hard for me not to see people that I admire. If you've been here longer than me and you have some exceptional accomplishments - I love you and you matter! At some point at everything I do, there's a 'here's to you' moment for my living legends in the house. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HrD2172EkF4 Starting with some un(familiar) songs this blend moves quickly into NYC garage classics. Hip Hop came after Funk, Soul, & Disco, & Jazz so generally, in my sets, Hip Hop comes after all that's played. Tracklisting forthcoming, press play and be there.... http://www.hbo.com/#/the-wire

 An R&B groover mix for a Lennox Lewis/HBO reception | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 4797

HBO is also a network for boxing. I can't recall who was fighting but I got the call that Lennox Lewis was attending and wanted to host a really short meet & greet out in Vegas. It's a long way and a lot of pay for a DJ to do 2 hours so HBO rang and asked me if I could help out with music. I was told that Lennox was into what's known as Neo-Soul, especially Maxwell and Jill Scott, here's the mix. The Rebirth - This Journey In Kindred - Far Away Toni Toni Tone - It Never Rains In Southern California Mary J Blige - Message In Our Music Erykah Badu - Bag Lady Les Nubiannes - Makeda (Spinna Mix) Jill Scott - It's Love Kelis & Andre 3000 - Millionaire Isley Brothers - Between The Sheets Jaguar Wright - The Country SOng Erykah Badu - Back In The Day Maxwell - Dancewitme Davina - Can't Help It Peven Everett - Testing Me DKD - Butter Angel Ty - Groovement Jill Scott - Gimmie Maxwell - Now/At The Party Angie Stone & Omar - Be Thankful For What You Got I did get to do a couple of boxing gigs, remembering most the Holyfield/Lewis fight at the Garden in 1999. Wow. http://www.hbo.com/boxing/features/article/heavyweight-title-unification-a-history.html

 APT AP10th 04 - Qool DJ Marv LIVE! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 4589

One of my career shaping/enhancing venues because this place had an open format. The DJs who played there played different (meaning not the same ole same ole - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dy39w7YDQsk) This is one of many recordings from APT - I would to record my 5 hour entire set and any hour could be used as a LIVE mix CD. I got into putting out live mixes as a 'separate the men from the boys' self promo tactic because anybody can make a good mix at home, using a computer, rehearsing, re-starting, editing until just right...but then what happens when they play live? Exposed. To be honest, I'd record primarily to play back while walking the streets of NYC or riding the subways and I'd listen for where I could improve. Hold a mix a little longer - don't chop off lyrics - bring in that next beat a little stronger...and when I'd playback and was pleased, I decided to start the LIVE! mix series. Play back one of your nights, would you dance/groove to you? Music by Thievery Corporation, DJ Krush, Romanowski, DJ Spinna, Rae & Christian, Esthero, Groove Armada (remix of A Tribe Called Quest's Description of A Fool), Roots Manuva, Ty, Jurassic 5, Bjork, Niko, RJD2, The Nextmen and more. http://www.residentadvisor.net/event.aspx?51655

Philadelphia Motivation (for brother Dew Doing the DO) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 15136

A very good friend that I've known for 20 years ran in the November 2010 1/2 marathon in Philadelphia. A little while ago he nudged me to put together something that he could listen to while doing the do. http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=65872700353&set=a.65870510353.147490.586515353 He's a Philly resident and I'm a Philly native so when he suggested that it feature (mostly) the music of Philadelphia International Records, I thought that this was a good opportunity to go back to my roots. http://www.gamble-huffmusic.com/home2/ This was an easy yes because way back when Dewey GAVE me a few hundred records and many of those have been the core of my groove, disco, boogie sets for years. Dewey once gave me the best advice when I was a young changing-records-too-fast DJ. Those classic records were made as complete pieces with much of the musical intensity and virtuosity happening after the 1st and 2nd verses and choruses. He's see me about to mix something else in and he'd say "HOLD UP - YOU GOT TO LET THAT ROLL - THAT"S THE PART RIGHT THERE." Disco's got funky breaks too. This is a selector set. My U.K. aficionados understand this. Start the record and let it play, no mixes or blends. Mostly vinyls, but a few CDs and mp3 cuts on here too - you'll notice subtle changes in fidelity. That fuzz, that's record crackle btw. Eventually I will revisit these selections and more and do my deconstruct reconstruct rearranging like Thelonious Monk style interpretations and re-present these mixed. Something like these projects: http://djqoolmarvsounds.podomatic.com/entry/2010-11-14T12_56_25-08_00 http://djqoolmarvsounds.podomatic.com/entry/2010-10-10T04_38_03-07_00 http://djqoolmarvsounds.podomatic.com/entry/2010-08-07T21_07_24-07_00 http://djqoolmarvsounds.podomatic.com/entry/2010-04-19T22_12_13-07_00 http://djqoolmarvsounds.podomatic.com/entry/2010-04-19T23_20_01-07_00 http://djqoolmarvsounds.podomatic.com/entry/2010-06-21T21_44_42-07_00 http://djqoolmarvsounds.podomatic.com/entry/2010-01-01T14_57_43-08_00 I inhale, and those are what I puff.  The Grand Classic Sounds of New York (Qool DJ Marv's Director's Cut) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 6680

I love those classic New York movies that have scenes where someone’s keeping their night going by heading to a friend’s afterparty and when they walk in, there’s a mini-jazz orchestra providing the grooves. This is happening in someone’s apartment! The bandleader with the baton bopping with a welcoming smile. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOlpcJhNyDI&feature=related I’ve never had the pleasure but I recently read in Stanley Crouch collection of essays called Considering Genius that Wynton Marsalis gets down like that for real, presently. This is an I Love New York mix that I got commissioned to compile by a special events consultant extraordinaire (Bowen & Company) that was organizing an affair involving the unveiling of a new Trump Tower penthouse suite. A nice new place was on display and my job here was to give the room a classic and grand sound. I’ve got a real soft spot for singers like Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra and for jazz in general so this was one of those ‘they pay me to do this(?)’ kind of assignments. http://www.bowenandco.com/ I didn’t get the chance to see the place so I just imagined being on the top of the Empire State building and looking around or re-imagined walking around great neighborhoods all over New York City. Watched some movies like Cotton Club, Harlem Nights, Breakfast At Tiffany's, and Manhattan and imagined what it might be like to be a jazz loving socialite way back when. This is a city that never ceases to astound and I wish I was around to see performances of all these sounds. Play these songs however, and I feel like I’m right there, then. So glad that I’m right here, now. I do love New York and I hope that this is a keepsake to us proper or former New Yorkers and maybe a delectable enticement to those who want to visit New York proper. Some titles appear more than once because all the versions are outstanding, yet, performed completely differently. That's Jazz. Enjoy New York City on the Jazz hand side.
